Apple pushes out the latest update for OS X 10.6

Apple has released the 10.6.2 update for OS X. The update features numerous bug fixes including a rather nasty bug that can erase user data when using guest mode. According to Apple, here are a list of the fixes in this latest release:
  • an issue that might cause your system to logout unexpectedly
  • a graphics distortion in Safari Top Sites
  • Spotlight search results not showing Exchange contacts
  • a problem that prevented authenticating as an administrative user
  • issues when using NTFS and WebDAV file servers
  • the reliability of menu extras
  • an issue with the 4-finger swipe gesture
  • an issue that causes Mail to quit unexpectedly when setting up an Exchange server
  • Address Book becoming unresponsive when editing
  • a problem adding images to contacts in Address Book
  • an issue that prevented opening files downloaded from the Internet
  • Safari plug-in reliability
  • general reliability improvements for iWork, iLife, Aperture, Final Cut Studio, MobileMe, and iDisk
  • an issue that caused data to be deleted when using a guest account

An expanded list of the fixes/changes can be viewed here.

Users can either download the update directly from Apple in client or server packages. However, the easiest way for users to grab the download is to just use the Software Update feature within OS X.

The last update for OS X was 10.6.1 which came just a few weeks after the initial release of OS X 10.6.

I thought Mac's "just worked" ? If Windows 7 had half these issues I wouldn't even be using it.

Sir, I ask you to please put your hands-up and cuff yourself to a cold water pipe while the MacFanBoy police arrives and beats you black and blue for posting this blasphemous comment. As an alternative, you can whip yourself a 100 times.

I like how even their bug descriptions appear to have gone through the marketing department. Instead of crashing, applications "quit unexpectedly". Instead of hanging, Address Book just "becomes unresponsive". And data corruption problems are simply "issues".

A wonder what horrible thing a "reliability problem" is a euphemism for. I would have thought crashing, but that's already covered by "quits unexpectedly". Maybe it's code for a spontaneous reboot?

hahaha there are tons of "phrases" in manufacturing as well :P But using the word "issue" is awesome as a substitute for a problem...even if it's fatal :)

All these issues you talk of are simply things that give the OS "character".

I believe that phraseology comes out of the auto-makers marketing/PR hand-book, used to describe many (sometimes very serious) faults in cars.

Although MS is no saint when it comes to patching buggy software... but this version of OS X is bearly out of the box and its suffering from so many flaws.

I think the dev team at apple need to concentrate on the job at hand instead of downloading useless app on their iphones and smeeling each others farts!

Ok my friend, here is the real scoop; the only things I have against Apple is their high prices and "PC users are idiots" commercials. I have used their OS for years, especially 2001-2005 doing graphic design, I cant really complain about the quality of the OS. Even so, I do prefer using a Windows based PC for just about everything.

Apple has been saying Microsoft and all their users are dimwitted oppressive sheep since 1984. Some of it is just bad form, some of it is snobbery. Microsoft, on the other hand, tends to NOT insult a potential user base by calling them mouth breathers.

Take it how you want to, but there is going to be some backlash against this type of marketing. If you want to get your panties up in a bunch about what a bunch of anonymous people on the internet said about something you like, I suggest some fucking breathing exercises.

My biggest complaint about Apple is their history of slow response to problems, or that sometimes they never even fix problems. For example, what took Apple so long to produce a fix to the "Guest account accidentally deletes your user accounts" bug? I don't know how anyone can say that's not a serious issue. When MS had the problem where IE had a severe vulnerability, they fixed it in under a week. Apple's user account "bug" has been known since 10.6 launched, and it took Apple a month to even acknowledge there was a problem. And THAT is the issue--Apple expects you to wait patiently and indefinitely for fixes. If MS did this for any major problem, they would never hear the end of it.

Actually, people who have friends and family that visit a lot often have the guest account turned on. I see it all the time.

No matter how you look at it, that was a HUGE problem that took Apple way way to long to address.

I understand that you dont have friends or family, simply because omg you got a mac you're so fuxking different.

hmm, I have loads of friends and a big family and they visit here all the time, hell, my home alone has 6 computers. Damn. My Windows 7 rox never gave me any problem. and Its "Guest Account" works. hmm as far as I remember, Vista, XP, 2000, never gave me any Guest account problems. and of course, its rock stable too.

Have fun with ur "fake" secured OS bitch.

Alright I can tell that I'm touching a nerve with you folks, downgrading my posts and all. Such thin skin LOL!. As a matter of fact, to no surprise, I do have lots of family and friends and you know what I actually trust them and don't have anything to hide from them as they log onto my account.

What's the matter got some kiddie stuff you shouldn't have on there? Hmmmm?

Here's a bit of advice in regards to your friends and family. Since you need to enable your guest account for them to log on maybe you shouldn't let them on your computer? Just some food for thought.

Your family and friends are your left & right.

You dont need to enable your guest account because you "can't", See that word? You "CANNOT" enable it. LOL FAILED.

Now you can enable it, omg. and how long it took them to fix this data corruption ... err I mean "issue" LOL

So yeah, you can stuff that Apple up your ass bitch. U got pwned again.

Yah because any of those security holes (Which are probably blocked by the default firewall.) are as bad as having your data scrubbed if you log in as a guest user. Sorry but fail on comparison. Nothing like this should make it out to the masses. It just goes to show that apple does not test their software enough before it goes out the door. remember this is the retarded company who's original motto was "Real Artists Ship" even if that does include a mass amount of buggy code. But lets be honest. This is nothing new for OS X. Remember the 10.3 File Vault bug? Small bugs are one thing. But Apple seems to have a knack for putting stuff out there that can cause a fairly serious data loss
http://arstechnica.com/apple/news/2009/10/time-cap...
or http://9to5mac.com/Apple-TV-3-0-1

Apple doesn't test their wares enough. It really does boil down to that. Hell how many times though 10.3-10.5 did Apple release a patch and then the same time yank it. I think 2 or 3 times + a couple of iLife patches as well. Apple is making a shit load of money. How about they use said money on hiring people to test out their wares a little but more comprehensibly before launch?

testing their software isn't possible, could you image Apple(Unix) releasing a beta test to the general public? That would mean they would have to give out something without charging, and they would have to actually RESPOND to users.
....
let's face it, OSX is the most advanced operating system on the planet. it doesn't crash, you just get sucked into a wormhole where you lose a few hours and THINK it crashed.
...
and where do the wormholes come from?? it's a built in particle accelerator included with your mail program.

To be fair, exploits are different than bugs. One poses a security risk while the other is more or less just an inconvenience and makes programs difficult/impossible to work with. I'm certainly not defending the OP, cause every piece of software is going to have problems in it's first release unless it's something pathetically simple like Hello World.

It's good to fix bugs, noone is arguing that, but Apple has its own hardware - its not like they have to make sure it works with litteraly 10,000+ different pieces of hardware from different manufacturers as well as a little piece of the market called "enterprise" and the tens of thousands of mission critical apps that go along with it.

You'd think it would be pretty simple for Apple. If Apple had to do what MS does, we would still be on OS8

unlike microsoft, our product is perfect...

Are we to assume that we will now have a post on each Microsoft update, seeing as this update makes news?

Justr a thought. Maybe it is bug news, maybe it isn't, but as long as DailyTech stays impartial then I'm all for news.

For instance, WHERE is the damn article about Windows 7 topping Amazons sales chart with pre-orders, seeing as we had an article on Snow lep?

P.s. Add spell checking to ie (I need it :)

I think it's "News" simply because Apple takes forever and a day to roll out an update to fix any of there issues anyway, where-as Microsoft is pretty proactive in such instances.

Thus with that in mind, everyone cheers "Hooray!" when something is finally fixed. :)

I think it was expected that Windows 7 would top the majority of sale charts anyway, Microsoft owns a significant amount of market share, where-as Apple and Linux are minuscule in comparison.

None of the "issues" listed are really problems at all. As Apple does not have problems, and there stuff "just works".

I have been informed by Apple that it was a new feature called the iBug. And apparently it's "really cool and great, and it really is the iBug software, not actual real problems... honestly"

Both of your posts were rated down because they are immature and just plain stupid.
For instance your "who uses a guest account?" post was obviously a stupid post trying to defend Apple.
I love how you the Man fans even defend bugs as big as that from Apple, where as a Windows user would just be annoyed.
You just keep taking the ***t they shovel down your throats.
