It hopes to move in on a market dominated by BlackBerry and Microsoft

Apple is a tough competitor in the smartphone and tablet markets, and it wants to translate those services over to the auto industry.

The tech giant from Cupertino, Calif. hopes to push BlackBerry and Microsoft aside when it comes to dashboard space in cars for navigation, music, emails, etc. With the iPhone being one of the most popular smartphones in the world, some automakers are jumping onboard with the idea of allowing iOS connectivity in their vehicles.

In fact, Honda, Hyundai, Volkswagen’s Audi, BMW, Toyota Motor Corp., Daimler AG’s Mercedes-Benz, Land Rover, Jaguar and the Chrysler Group LLC plan to use Apple’s Siri Eyes Free service in models released as early as this year. Siri Eyes Free was made to control functions like music and texting without requiring the user to take their eyes off the road.

However, many believe that Apple won’t be a serious game changer that takes over the auto infotainment business. For starters, companies like BlackBerry and Microsoft have already established places in this area and hold huge market share. BlackBerry’s QNX system makes up 50 percent of the 2012 market for proprietary OS in cars while Microsoft has about 25 percent.

Also, Apple’s Siri function in iOS 6 hasn’t proven to be the best option for functions like navigation. For instance, Edmunds.com Editor Ron Montoya said that Siri didn’t work too well for voice recognition, making navigation difficult.

Siri Eyes-Free is front and center on the new Chevrolet Spark

But Apple is close to releasing iOS 7, which may offer a better Siri experience for autos.

Analysts from HIS iSuppli believe that Apple will more likely make a move in the music and entertainment part of the dashboard rather than navigation and other functions. Currently, Pandora holds the top spot as auto music provider with one-third of all new vehicles sold this year having the service pre-installed, but Apple hopes to make a move with iTunes.

“It’s something that people want, and I think that Apple can do this in a unique way and better than anyone else,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, regarding iOS compatibility in vehicles. “It’s a key focus for us.”

It’s becoming a key focus for automakers as well, who are realizing that drivers are opting for cheap apps on their mobile devices for navigation, music, etc. instead of pricey infotainment systems made by the automaker. These embedded systems can cost up to $2,000 and provide software that must be updated periodically at the dealership. Smartphone apps, on the other hand, offer real-time updates sent right to the phone, and these apps are often inexpensive or free.

This is causing many automakers to rethink their strategy, allowing smartphones to sync with dashboard interfaces. With this new realization emerging, Apple likely wants to jump on the bandwagon so iOS users – which make up a big population of the smartphone market – can have yet another excuse to stick with the platform.

Why do they have to pick just one?
By rpierce on 8/6/2013 12:07:40 PM , Rating: 3
Seems to me this should be rather simple. Instead of the carmaker picking a side, they should just provide the screen and interface. Then, each OS could create an app like "Car Dock" that supplies all the music, nav, etc.

This would create more competition between the OS makers and would allow consumers to choose a solution that best meets their needs.

While I agree 100% with your post, will it happen? These are car people after all. What they should do is have a standard interface to hookup to, but we both know they will screw that up for sure.

RE: Why do they have to pick just one?

The standard is really already there.

A car's touchscreen display just needs an HDMI input and follow either USB or Bluetooth HID standards for the touchscreen. A whole bunch of smartphones can connect to that.

Right! Build an API to connect with the vehicle, and create apps distributed via the respective app stores.

And as long as we're wishing: I'd like to see Qi charging and NFC pairing built into new vehicles.

My guess would be GM might pick this up.

A friend of mine went to work in their infotainment division and it was such a mess that he ended up leaving and returning to his former employer. He basically said their system was overambitious, poorly coded, and missing multiple internal targets.

A drop in solution could also save them on costs.

...phone wars extended to our vehicles. I would prefer a more generic and industry-standard way to connect my phone to my vehicle instead of having proprietary connectors for iThings. It pisses me off when I go to the gym and the treadmill has a proprietary connector for an iPhone instead of just a USB connector for any device.

This is gimmicky and I'd hate to have to not buy a car simply because it's built for iTards.

Ford (and the Lincoln subsidiary) have updated their systems by mailing USB memory sticks to owners. While not as quick/easy as the over the air updates, they don't cause the annoyance of a dealer visit.

I will NOT buy a car that has any "built-in" apple functionality. In fact, I will be much more likely to buy from a competing brand that does NOT offer said functionality.

If you want my business, I suggest you offer universal options, like a micro-USB dock/bluetooth, and nothing else. Apple is welcome to pull it's head out of its proverbial ass and get with the rest of the world on USB--or it can whither in oblivion with its badly-overpriced-and-completely-useless "lightning" connectors.

infotainment as option
By BRMarshall on 8/12/2013 6:01:50 PM , Rating: 2
I'll be looking for a new car in the next two years. I do not need or want infotainment in my car. I've been driving for over 35 years and have only bought vehicles with manual transmissions, and non-powered windows and locks. I would rather car companies spend the money I pay on better quality mechanicals and materials. Making infotainment optional, including a customer's choice of apple, microsoft, etc. would be great. I try to pay attention when I drive - avoiding deer, commercial vehicles, and drivers swerving into my lane while talking on their phones. During these years, I've never had a charged accident. The three I've been involved in were the fault of others. This seems like a strange comment on a 'tech' site, but there are a few of us out there who enjoy driving to work, the store, etc. I feel that we all have a responsibility to each other to be attentive and safe drivers.

If this site became more reputable you'd find more and more people commenting who aren't such delusional Apple haters and you'd probably dream that we created thousands of accounts. The reality is that your view is the minority.

On pretty much every single other tech site, Samsung are widely known as the most corrupt organisation there is, possibly even worldwide. Their very foundation and existence - the monopoly within their own country is as a result of decades of bribes and corruption. There are 2 stories THIS MONTH where they are bribing people on sites such as StackOverflow to issue fake stories and dissussion about Samsung events.

quote:
At least other companies fess up to thier mistakes versus Apple who blantantly tells its mindless minnions, "You're holding it wrong".

Oh, they do? Last I checked, THIS WEEK Samsung was caught cheating benchmarks with a 'BenchmarkBooster' by Anandtech. Did they 'fess up' - no, they issued a false statement claiming that other apps can reach the same MHz that is seen in the benchmarks - but that's a flat out lie. That isn't 'fessing up' - that's being caught and denying all knowledge. To believe Samsung is more ethical is just to be totally ignorant.

quote:
blantantly tells its mindless minnions, "You're holding it wrong".

I owned an iPhone 4. I tried to hold the phone in such a way as to lose signal, and I couldn't. But anyone who COULD (and I believe there are some) had to hold the phone in such a ridiculous way that it really would never be a problem in real life. That's why the phone sold so well and got the highest satisfaction ratings at the time. As much as you Apple haters may love to rattle of sad little phrases like 'You're holding it wrong' every time anything Apple gets discussed in the news - it's actually true, nobody holds a phone like that.

As I started out, on any other balanced site, you are the troll. I can only assume that almost everyone seeking balanced reporting left this site a long time ago, leaving a bunch of backwards android Apple haters who continue to validate themselves.

See the leap you make there? I like SD therefore I must be too stupid to figure out the puzzle that is cloud storage. LOL. That pretty much illustrates all of your arguments. Misunderstand the comment and then assume and insult. Then you persist with your false conclusions and when people give up trying to talk to you, you claim victory saying your points are proven and cant be refuted. Wrong... No, I started educating you ages ago, and besides - I never said I hadn't insulted you - I said that insults were never the totality of my post. Unlike you. I always present the logical rebuttal where a point has been made. Note, right here, how I'm having to educate you as to what I said IN THIS VERY ARTICLE. It'll come up.

quote:

Lets not skip over the fact that this being so ingrained in your memory already proves how tragic you are and how upset I've made you.

quote:
was that I was too stupid to figure out how to use the could for storage.

The 'could'? Na, you're definitely not stupid.

quote:
I like SD therefore I must be too stupid to figure out the puzzle that is cloud storage. LOL. That pretty much illustrates all of your arguments. Misunderstand the comment

Well lets apply some logic here. No doubt the discussion of SD cards came up in one of your many rants about why Android is so perfect and why Apple fans are stupid. And since you mentioned SD cards as a reason why Android was better it was only fair for me to educate you as to why lots of people don't need SD cards. The 'stupidity' probably arose from your inability to accept those arguments, I've never labelled the desire to have SD storage as stupid. But then again, why let what I've actually said/not said change what you argue against, hey? (Came up again - take note). The storage is slower (which is why Android doesn't even support apps on them now), there are adapters for any phone which let you use them, and there are numerous alternatives, such as using the cloud.

As for 'misunderstanding the comment' - I've had to go back and re-educate you as to what I specifically said about 5-10 times in the past 2 DAYS! You're failure to read is matched only by Cheese, several times even in this very comment .

As for your new level of desperation where you link some kind of image in every post, you couldn't really get much weaker than having to resort to a standard (I assume) picture just to try and prove that you're right.

Apple took ideas from Xerox for their original Macintosh. Many of the patents that Apple has asserted against Samsung have been invalidated by the patent office. So I really don't have any idea how you come to either company being particularly unethical. I am more put off by Samsungs recent efforts to cheat on benchmarks than I am for using unpalatable Apple IP.

How about Microsoft going to court to get it to force Motorola to license its patents for less then the initial offer without ever even trying to negotiate?

At this rate, I guess you will be walking ever where you go, not using the internet and growing your own food. Sorry, but this gets to a ridiculous place very quickly.

I totally agree. There is nothing more tedious than articles and discussions about legal actions. I have no real interest in the minutiae of patent law, none of the legal actions underway will have any significant impact on me or anybody reading this comment, and in a few years it will all be forgotten except by a handful of obsessives.

I am interested in the development of technology and who and what is shaping the world I live in and if we could have more discussion about that and much, much less about IP law I would be very happy. Unfortunately I think that the endless round of discussion and comment about who sued who, and whose legal case is right and who is wrong, will meander pointlessly on for a long time to come, and irritatingly I will be drawn into those discussions.

Wouldn't it be great if we could just come to a general agreement to never discuss any of that crap ever again? Think how much lighter and freer we would all feel.

With so much construction fraud, unethical animal treatment, poisoned crops and chinese sweatshops you'd have to be a homeless, starving naked person in order to live "ethically".

Rather then kill myself because of this FUCKED UP world we live in, i'll focus my anger on the company i see as the worst and try to burn it down. If apple does die i'll just move right on to the next one. Probably back to good ol' microsoft.

Atleast it keeps the mind off real world issues. Otherwise, i'll invite the rest of europe to start the war against germany for trying to take over europe again through the euro. All of you americans are invited to finally start the revolution against the tyrants in office right now comitting financial suicide while the chinese should get going killing everybody in the communist party, as local democratic governments are the only way for them to preserve any enviroment they have left while the Russians should rise up against the new stalin called Putin.

How ironic.

Yeah except all you just illustrated is your inability to read:

quote:

When you develop the capability to read, you should educate yourself first and then consider replying.

I can read just fine, thank you very much, I am pointing out that Apple does the same thing but as usual, you gloss over it like it's nothing.

Hence, the IRONIC part.

It is absolutely pathetic that you have so much time on your hands to sit and defend Apple as much as you do.

Again, you're still failing. Even after I told you why you're failing.

I said one of the companies infringes patents from the OTHER to the tune of $500m. NEITHER of which were satisfied by the results of your desperate apple-hate-fuelled research.

What's ironic is that you say I'm the one with 'so much time on my hands' after doing precisely this.

You should probably go back to just saying 'he's a troll' or other such worthless content which can be ignored because when you try at something - you fail.

Oh and the question also specified:

Over $500m

Double fail..

Seriously? Apple can be quite lame way more often than it is worthwhile IMO but MOST unethical in the world? That just sounds naïve...

Oh get off of it. Apple is small potatoes when it comes to unethical.

Every tobacco company there swore an oath and proceeded to testify before Congress that cigarettes weren't addictive. It has even been shown that they added chemicals to the product to make them more addictive. While they were at it some of them even targeted their advertising at kids.

While I dislike some things Apple does I don't know that they've had anyone killed. There are rumours and investigations of just that sort of thing in Korea. Anyone you know that works out of Korea?

You want to go back a few years, several large banks in the U.S. lent out trillions via sub-prime mortgages and sold them on as (worthless) securities to more naive investors. They paid their pals at the ratings agencies (or owned them outright) to have their junk AAA rated to help make the deals go down. They have mostly got off scott free. The middle class on the other hand lost half or more of their net worth when that bubble burst. Millions more are still unemployed as result.

Why do you think more than a trillion tax dollars have been wasted and thousands killed or maimed in Iraq? Could it be there was a lot of oil there and some companies that wanted to make a little coin there?? Could it be that the oil types (Bush and Cheney) and their cronies in the industry had anything to do with that?

Clearly you have an anti-Apple bug up your butt. You really should get a grip. Apple is a piker compared to what really goes down in this world every day.

What isn't addictive though?

Alcohol is addictive. Fast food is addictive. Even sugar is addictive. Chinese food used/uses MSG etc etc.

That doesn't make the use of such things evil. Cigarettes are the same, but I digress:

I think the context of the discussion is that as far as TECH companies are concerned, Apple is top scumbag. Of course there are more unethical companies in general, but probably not very many :)

So what happened to not buying gas because Gas Companies are one of the world's most unscrupulous and unethical company? Don't stop there ...

While you are at it, don't buy anything made from China because they abuse their workers.

See where that get you ... if you are going to go all the way, don't knick pick.

Don't be a emotional buyer ... be a rational buyer.
