And now aiming for 2 billion

Apple tonight surpassed the 1 billion iTunes song mark, a number that it has been striving to reach for, for the last year. At MacWorld earlier this year, Steve Jobs said that Apple has been receiving record sales across the board, and boasted that Apple now has a total of 150 Apple stores. We recently reported that Apple was making its Manhattan store location a 24 hour operation to meet the demands of loyal Apple customers.

Apple was holding a contest for the customer first to hit the billionth download mark, with a grand prize of:
  • One 20-inch iMac
  • Ten 60GB iPods (5 white/5 black)
  • One U.S. $10,000 iTunes Music Card (good for any media type)

Or at least learn what sarcasm is, eh? ;)

Aside from the music store part I don't understand the appeal of the iTunes player over winamp.

You quite clearly don't have an iPod then.

Yes it is possible to use other programs to put music onto an iPod (i sometimes use ephpod), but nothing comes close to the ease and simplicity of dynamic playlists in iTunes. I have dynamic playlists for a range of things (moods, star ratings etc) that will automatically change the music in my ipod for me. Now that I'm actually not using my ipod anymore, I need to find some way in which to synch my phone with iTunes...

True, but If I did have an iPod (Instead of my large Nomad 3, which I hardly use anymore either) I would only use it to transfer music. I think that iTunes too large, has poor visuilizations (milkdrop anyone!). I also find it annoying that unless you are lucky and find the quicktime installer without iTunes you have to install them both. Then there are the 2 processes that start with windows, iPodservice.exe, and iTuneshelper.exe, no thanks.

It might not be obvious when the page first loads, but I see it right on the same download page as the quicktime w/ itunes. I wouldn't call that lucky, and I still can't figure out what that has to do with ipod sales numbers, or why somebody would or wouldn't own one.
