Analysts indicated iPhone on the way to production

With all the talk about Apple's move into the mobile communications space, the term "iPhone" is now official, as Apple has completed filing trademark rights on the term. DailyTech last reported that Apple also owned the domain iphone.org. The company has also been reported to have signed a deal with Cingular Wireless for an exclusive launch of the iPhone. According to reports, the Apple filing indicated that the iPhone is a handheld mobile device for sending and receiving telephone calls, faxes and email.

AppleInsider noted that Apple also indicated that the iPhone was listed under a "video game machine" category. DailyTech reported on Apple's launch of its newest iPod, which is now capable of playing a host of games as well as playing back video and audio. We can only assume that Apple will have some sort of game play functionality built into the iPhone. It would also be interesting to see if the device will have wireless multiplayer capabilities similar to the Nintendo DS and Sony PSP.

Analysts are predicting that Apple's iPhone will hit the market in a big way. Estimates are hovering around an initial gain of 1% market share -- which translates to roughly $2 billion a year in extra revenue for Apple. Apple's chief financial officer Peter Oppenheimer mentioned several months ago that Apple was definitely working on a "better" phone-audio-player combo device. He felt that existing phones weren't that great at playing music and that Apple was "not sitting around doing nothing."

Some reports are predicting that Apple will introduce the iPhone at a starting price of $200. It is unknown however how many models will be introduced. Sources close to Apple indicated that the company was well on the way to producing final designs for production given that the iphone.org domain had been registered since 1999.

that iMobile sounds better, but oh well.

Is it just me, or is it kind of rediclous that APPLE is making a mobile phone now?

Makes perfect sense to me, phones have been becoming convergence devices for a long time. Why let the other phone manufacturers start to eat into your audio/video player market share, when you can leverage a strong brand and not only make back your marketshare in that area, but take it with the apple/ipod brand...

go nab the .com while you can just to cause apple unnescacary effort :D

in fact, why not just patent a phone in the shape of an I before apple can :D

They are waiting to use iMobile for later when they can figure out how to get a camera into the phone.

they dont mess up the "phone" part. Its all well and good if it plays music well (as they say the predecessors dont do well) but dont work as a phone very well, then what the point?

my sony K800 plays music pretty damn well actually, the only gripe is you cant change the headphones since they double up as hands free and a Antenna for the FM radio

if the iphone provides a means to use your own Headphones then im sure it will be a hit

if it doesnt its in the same park as everything else

I have the Sony W810, and it's the perfect phone and MP3 player (4GB's is more then enough for me). My only gripe is the same headphone issue and that is doesn't support the bluetooth A2DP profile for mp3 stearimg to my car/stereo/computer.

I think there is an adaptor that you can buy allowing you to use any standard 3.5mm headphone. downside is that you dont have a mic for handsfree and will have to use the phone itself.

Apple does not manufactor batteries. If you're going to give Apple grief, give them grief for going cheap and ordering crappy batteries but let's lay the blame where it really lies. At the feet of the likes of Sony and others who actually make the defective batteries.

And the crappy batteries were on the 1st to 3rd generation iPods and not 4th, 5th or 5.5th generation ones which are relatively problem free as far as the batteries are concerned. Will any iPod generation be 100% battery problem free? No. But the same can be said about any batteries from all of the other players in the mp3 market.
