The latest Laptop Hunter Ad featuring Matt and Olivia
"Hey, you need to stop running those ads, we lowered our prices."

The battle between Microsoft and Apple has been a long and arduous one. Until the turn of the century, Apple wasn't much of a threat to Microsoft's bottom line. However, the rise of the iPod music player, the iPhone, Apple's resurgence with its Mac computers, and the resultant "Get a Mac" commercials have been a thorn in Microsoft's side.

Microsoft sat on the sidelines for years as Apple fired away at the stability, reliability, and lack of "user friendliness" with PCs. Apple labeled PCs are virus-prone machines and burned Windows Vista at the stake. Finally, this past April, Microsoft fired back with all its might on the one thing that Apple couldn't argue with when it comes to Macs versus PCs:  price.

A series of Laptop Hunter ads made waves on television and on the internet which showed PC-based notebooks as offering a better value for the money while Macs were labeled as "pretty, but expensive". After the first few commercials aired, Apple spokesman Bill Evans issued the following statement, "A PC is no bargain when it doesn't do what you want. The one thing that both Apple and Microsoft can agree on is that everyone thinks the Mac is cool. With its great designs and advanced software, nothing matches it at any price."

It now appears that Apple is even more concerned about the continued Laptop Hunter ads. In fact, if Microsoft COO Kevin Turner's recounting is accurate, Apple's legal department is more than a bit peeved at the commercials. Turner noted at Microsoft's Worldwide Partner Conference:

And so we've been running these PC value ads. Just giving people saying, hey, what are you looking to spend? "Oh, I'm looking to spend less than $1,000." Well we'll give you $1,000. Go in and look and see what you can buy. And they come out and they just show them. Those are completely unscripted commercials.

And you know why I know they're working? Because two weeks ago we got a call from the Apple legal department saying, hey -- this is a true story -- saying, "Hey, you need to stop running those ads, we lowered our prices." They took like $100 off or something. It was the greatest single phone call in the history that I've ever taken in business.

I did cartwheels down the hallway. At first I said, "Is this a joke? Who are you?" Not understanding what an opportunity. And so we're just going to keep running them and running them and running them.

Apple is correct about its lowered pricing. With its latest MacBook Pro refresh, it lowered the price of entry for its 15" and 17" models by $300. It also introduced the new 13" MacBook Pro at a price $100 lower than its predecessor. However, the cheapest way to get an Apple notebook is still going to cost you $999 -- that gets you a polycarbonate 13" MacBook running at 2.13GHz.

So even though Mac computers are across the board cheaper than in the past, Microsoft still has a free pass to tout the “lower price, better value” angle. And from the looks of Turner’s comments, Microsoft appears to be content in running the Laptop Hunter ad campaign for a long time – just like Apple with its “Get a Mac” series.

But seriously Apple can't complain about the Microsoft ads when they been spewing deceitful garbage about Windows in their ads for the last several years.

The main reason Microsoft has seen a turnaround is because of strong new products like Windows 7. Apple should complain less and similarly focus on its product design and opening its systems if it wants to remain popular and successful.

Would it be legal for Microsoft to hire the same people Apple uses in its commercials? Then make an ad where the "Mac Guy" says "Yeah hey. You've been making some commercials lately that have been kicking our ass. Could you stop making them please?"

Then the PC guy just kicks him in the balls and says "No."

Mac Guy: Hi, I'm a Mac.
PC Guy: Hi, I'm a PC.

*suave-looking Mac guy looks down at the ground with a sad face*

*PC Guy walks over*

PC Guy: What's wrong, Mac?
Mac Guy: I'm broke. I had a hot date with a supermodel MacBook Pro the other night and ended up blowing all my money...

PC Guy: Oh, Sorry to hear tha...
Mac Guy: Worst of all, she didn't even put out, all I got was a hug...

PC Guy: What a tease.

Mac Guy: Yeah. I ran into her yesterday and asked her out again - but she wanted me to pick her up in a limousine and fly her to the NYC for the evening... I told her why don't we should just hang out at my place and cuddle...

... She kicked me in the balls, called me a cheapskate and ran off with some other greasy looking Mac who had lots of money.

*PC Guy pats him on the back, comforting him*

PC Guy: Ouch. I hung out with my Netbook Girl last night watching Mythbusters. Chicks dig the inner geek in me.

*Mac Guy shoots himself*

You know 'the stripper myth.' The stripper myth is: 'I'm stripping to pay my tuition.' No you're not! There's no strippers in college! There's no clear heels in biology! Shit, I didn't know they had a college that only took one-dollar bills. If they've got so many strippers in college, how come I never got a smart lap dance? I never got a girl that sat on my lap and said 'if I was you, I would diversify my portfolio. You know, ever since the end of the Cold War, I find NATO obsolete.' I haven't met her yet. If I do, she's gonna get a big tip.

I can't believe it, but I'm going to agree with Mick. Win7 is simply GORGEOUS even if you gut it completely. Not counting download and disc-burning time, Win7 was installed and running on this in 20 minutes... http://tinyurl.com/nll9uy - If you don't want to click the link:
- Intel Pentium® M Processor 730 [1.60GHz, 2MB L2 cache,
533MHz FSB]
- 512MB DDR333

Works nice, and even better after a little bit of stripping down. And a little tweaking: used the 32-bit version and ran XP driver installs in compatibility mode for hardware that didn't have vista/7 drivers. Works faster compared to vista64 installed on my desktop system with 2.5x2 and 4GB.

Why do people really feel the need to complain about Vista still when you can get Windows 7 for Free to use for about a year and can spend $50.00 upgrading to Windows 7 when its released?

If people hate Vista that much just run the beta of Windows 7. In fact I read tons of people who are running Windows 7 betas that love it and have no problem with it then go back to Vista and complain? Why? Just keep running the beta and install Windows 7 when it comes out.

... and....?

Your response has to make sense to the subject matter. I'll do my best.

$50 deal is over...
If you bought a PC a few weeks ago or beyond, you didn't get your coupon for Windows7... So its $100~200 for an upgrade disc that is limited to 32 or 64bit. To do both, buy the retail version.

Buy a new PC now, which = $0~$1 costs to the customer + time to install it.

Vista 64 is every bit as fast as XP SP3, but needed 6GB RAM more to be that way. By the way, saying someone who hates Vista is stuck in 2007 is a bit harsh. XP is still a solid OS, and until recently, was a better choice.

I have basically the same laptop. What did you do to strip down Win 7 and squeeze a little more performance out? I've been using XP on that laptop for years, recently switched to Ubuntu because XP was painfully slow compared to my Vista desktops. Unfortunately, Ubuntu isn't great for a lot of things, so I'm looking to go back to XP... or Win 7 by the sounds of it. Thanks

RE: Keep 'em coming

I'd start with Themes, performance (under system, etc. Just some of the basic stuff.

After that, remove windows components (the ones that MS jams down your throat).

Also, I disabled superfetch/prefetch/readyboost/readyboot. There was no noticable decrease/increase in performance, boot time dropped down, and it saved my old HDD from doing any more read/writes than it needs to.

My final step - I went through the services and disabled anything that didn't sound the least bit useful (I'm never going to be doing IPSec tunnels on that junk for example).

There more you COULD do, but you could also get away with less. I just did what I knew how to do off the top of my head or managed to find with a few seconds of poking around. It worked good enough out of box I could get away with doing nothing - except for using the compatibility mode to install XP drivers :) All of it was just to make sure I can play decent quality movies without it choking on me.

If xp or 7 is still slow for you, try Debian. If you don't mind working for it a little it's really nice and much better than Ubuntu in my opinion, but Debian is my favorite distro right now and ubuntu is pretty much my least liked distro so I'm slightly biased against Ubuntu. :)

I recently switched from a 3 year old white macbook to a 13in. Acer Timeline and couldn't be happier. Got this thing on sale for $550, get 9 hours on a charge, and is fast enough for all the apps I use (office, web, 720p video watching).

Also put Windows 7 RC the first day and I just cannot go back to any other OS. It is rock solid, fast, and I am completely in love with Aero Peek. Apple has absolutely nothing to talk smack about when it comes to Windows 7.

I still love my iphone, ipod nano, and mac mini I use as a music server though :p

The usual argument goes that $1500 Apple has better specs and is better built than a $600 PC.

But the real question should be:
- who is the best provider for the specs you want;
or
- what is the best deal I can get for a certain amount of money ($600 or $1500).

I'm sure that $1500 HP Elitebook beats $1500 Mac ;)

Actually its not because not everyone has a $1500.00/$999.00 budget especially just to run Apples linux distro.

I can buy a $350.00 laptop that I'm sure would be more than adequate to run the Apple OS today. Surely it would run any other flavor of Linux/BSD or Windows but why does Apple require $1500.00/$999.00 laptop hardware? Because that's how they make their money and that's fine if you have the money and want an Apple.

As for $350.00 laptop quality there seem to be plenty of people very happy with them. The price drops might be that netbooks are cutting into the laptop market and prices are dropping on notebooks or it could be that they are just cheaper to make today than they were just a few years ago.

I don't believe you need to spend a high amount of money to get a quality PC today. After all a basic PC in my early days were over $3000.00 for the basic PC and quality was much worse than today's PC's. I believe that Laptops are finally breaking the sub $500.00 price barriers for quality units but Apple doesn't want you to believe that you can get a quality laptop for less than $999.00.

Apples do *NOT* run a linux distro.

The OSX underpinnings (Darwin) uses the Mach microkernel crossed with FreeBSD (mixed with I/O Kit).

Linux is a postix compliant knock-off of unix/minix.
FreeBSD is based on BSD, which itself was a re-writing of the original AT&T Unix (licensed by AT&T).

I still have my Amiga3000. Its 3x the weight of my desktop.

But no, I was referring to AmigaOS itself.

An interesting little tidbit. The Amiga3000's 32bit Zorro slots from 1989 are still FASTER (and PnP before PnP had a name) than todays PCI slots. Enough that when SCSI HD manufactures wanted to show HOW fast their drives were, the Amiga 3000 was used.

Ah, if only A real company got their hands on Amiga Tech rather than C=. They wasted time & $$ on R&D and including PC-ISA slot in their desktops... for which FEW people actually bothered with. Idiots.

OS X is just a GUI manager, similar to GNOME/KDE running on a variety of *nix systems.

Actually Apple's "Macs" are PCs by every meaning of the word, since they natively run Windows. They just have a special purposely incompatible BIOS (EFI) so that OS X x86 cannot run without minor modifications on other PCs.

RE: $1500 Mac vs $1500PC
By FITCamaro on 7/16/2009 4:49:54 PM , Rating: 2
So what happens when Windows starts supporting that type of BIOS and boards with it become more prevalent? Apple will probably change to something else.

RE: $1500 Mac vs $1500PC
By sprockkets on 7/16/2009 5:40:06 PM , Rating: 2
I haven't read all the details of EFI, simply because I haven't found one yet outside of Macs, but some by their posts here suggest that drivers for OSX are built into EFI (you have to update the EFI firmware to update drivers), and that is why Windows needs BootCamp and a BIOS backup implementation to work properly, even if Vista 64 bit SP1 supports EFI booting (again need more info).

I'm also skeptical about needing EFI to have Mac's power saving abilities, since people with MSI Wind Netbooks also got an hour extra battery life with Hackint0sh, and Atom processors have no support for power savings in OSX.

Even though Intel Boards are using BIOS, they seem to operate in EFI ways. When you activate the upgrade in windows, it reboots to a black screen for about 20 seconds, then shuts down, restarts, and the BIOS is updated. Itanium runs with EFI. It's not that Windows won't run on Apple's PCs, it's OS X they don't want to run on other PCs.

This means purposely creating incompatibilities, like stopping iTunes to work with Palm Pre.

It's time for regulators to take a bite in the apple!

Mac: hey PC, what cha got there?

MAC: yea PC...sure looks...great... (goes back to his mac and starts playing Oregon trail)

A better comparison between PC and Mac is VALUE. Macs have more value at the time of getting it in your hands and then to the end. Apple provides better customer support and their stores makes it easier for those that do not want to wait on the phone to get some help. Apple has created a community like the Linux community that provides help. PC has no value since you have to pay to get support. Overall PC might be cheaper but they are the most expensive on the time of first using them and then to the end.

Plenty of Dell support plans that answer you in less than 5 minutes and are in the US. And Apple never sends a person to your house to repair stuff while Dell does.

In the end, both end up costing you something - Apple just requires you paying it whether you want it or not.

SLI may not be necessary for game playing, but it sure comes in handy for Crysis. More than the extra 8 logical cores of the high-end MBP, I'm guessing. At a certain point, most games can't really spawn enough CPU threads to take advantage of all the resources you can throw at them. There are certainly workloads where 16 threads will come in handy, though. And some of those workloads (like graphic design) are traditional Mac strongholds, which is why Apple has the dual Xeon MBP option (for a very reasonable price, I might add). But for gaming, 2x GTX 285s will give you a better boost than 2x Xeons.

It's the same rule as using 'I' vs 'me'. If you can replace the word with 'he' use 'who', if you can replace the word with 'him' use 'whom'. So in this case, 'the battle between him and someone else' is right, so it would be whom.

Then there's the irreplaceable batteries that burn out, their ability to disable iphone apps they find distasteful or that compete with their own future software...

As far as I can tell Apple actively despises the yuppie idiots that buy their products and actively tries to give them the worst experience possible.

"A PC is no bargain when it doesn't do what you want. The one thing that both Apple and Microsoft can agree on is that everyone thinks the Mac is cool. With its great designs and advanced software, nothing matches it at any price."

I don't even know where to start. A PC does everything I want, a Mac does NOT run all the software/hardware I need. The only people that think a Mac is cool are people easily swayed by advertising (idiots). I've yet to see any great designs or advanced software out of Apple.

We both remarked how our friend would do the exact same thing. A few days later, he called me and fussed me out. After I hung up the phone, I just laughed it off. We are still friends, but this reminds me of that.

Apparently such childish behavior does extend to the corporate world. Apple can dish it out, but cannot take it. And it is hilarious. If Microsoft can somehow manage to hire Justin Long and John Hodgman, that would the ultimate insult.

But it is doing some good. With Apple lowering their prices, I may be finally able to afford a Mac. Keep it up Microsoft! Lower prices are a good thing for me!

This seems as good a place as any to reply to this article. Kevin Turner claims (apparently again) that these ads are unscripted? It was found a while back after Turner claimed these weren't paid actors that they in fact were. I don't claim there to be anything wrong with them using actors or some sort of script in their commercials even if they say they don't. The point is Kevin Turner has been found to be less than honest about these ads in the past.

That brings us to the probability of Apple's legal department phoning a COO and not Microsoft's legal department. Or preferring to issue them some form of letter (CAD) instead of a brief phone call. Is that how legal departments work? Furthermore the only issue I see at hand here (one this article completely gets wrong) is that many of the older ads show incorrect prices on the Apple laptops. You can see a hard number in the ads, its not just a mention of "Geez, these cost more". This is assuming Apple even filed a complaint with Microsoft which I question when the only one saying they did is Kevin Turner.

I realize this site has its fair share of individuals that prefer PCs that aren't made by Apple, one need only to look at the comments of this article for a clue, but this is at best just a vague rumor and I expect more from Daily Tech than that.

It is worthwhile to remember that Microsoft does not make PC's. In that context Microsoft is defending, at its own expense, a broader and more inclusive hardware/software community. Apple on the other hand is a very closed community.

$800 for a Mac Mini (no keyboard, no mouse, no display, no speaker, etc. and it overheats), give me a break! Regardless of details, with Apple the consumer always gets less and pays more.

Question: Did Microsoft's lawyers use implied legal action against Apple for it's I'm a Mac/I'm a PC ads? Again, Microsoft does not make PC's.

Apple ought to change their name again, to Lawyer Inc.

What?
Do you know what the words you are using actually mean? And do you know who builds the Macs that are 'a different CLASS'?

Apparently not.
It's specs, not demographics. And specs are specs. It's what makes computers computers. It's whether or not people understand what they are looking at, as you, obviously, do not. When a manufacturer that makes both Macs and PC's buils them, I'm sure the parts come out of the same bins. I mean a nVidia 9400 is a 9400. That's all there is. No difference.
And a 1.8GHz core2duo is all it is. It's not anything else.

And as far as lasting longer with fewer problems.... What's lasting longer? The hardware? How is it being used? Where is it being used? In what conditions?
I would guess maybe people use them PC's a little more roughly because they cost 1/3-1/2 of what a similar 'demographics' (whatever that means) Mac costs.

Please crawl back to your white polycarbonate hole.

How exactly do you know the nature of the call from Apple to Microsoft?

Also, the ads do state that the units being purchased are on sale for whatever amounts they are purchasing them for. Even Apple systems on Sale do not drop by that big a margin or to those prices with comparable hardware and features.

Also, given the number of lawsuits filed against Apple globally for false advertising, it would be hilarious if they went crying about Microsoft's rather clever little ads :D

You're not connected, you're incompetent.

Microsoft was running the Ad, THEN Apple lowered their prices, and hey - ad's currently running don't magically reflect the new prices.

There's no misrepresentation, Apple changed their price in response to the Ad and you're complaining that the commercials aren't LIVE and get magically updated in real time.

It's like watching something on the news that says "Company dumps toxic waste into lake!" and then the company goes "Totally untrue! We stopped that 2 days ago, right after we got caught!"

NO. The ad is still running. I saw it last night.

Seems either you are the one completely out of touch.

This is now several weeks after hardware refresh and price change. If it were just a few days after the price change then I'd expect everyone to cut Microsoft some slack on it as the ad placement would have already been set. However, to still be running this ad several weeks after the price change and still have the wrong prices is asinine. There is no excuse for this. Microsoft is intentionally misstating the prices of Apple's products. And they are still doing it as evidenced by the ad showing just last night!

Let me restate again for the record: Microsoft could state the real prices and still get the same message across. Apple's products are over priced. They don't have to exaggerate to get that point across in their ads.

Uh, no, you're the one out of touch.

Apple IS STILL SELLING $1999 15.4" Macbook Pro's!

http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shop_mac/fam...

Thus, the only "Inaccuracy" involved is the price for that particular set of specs for that specific model Macbook. What are the specs of the Macbook Pro in question from the ad? Let's read them, they're crystal clear (SARCASM INTENDED):
http://macdailynews.com/index.php/weblog/comments/...

Uh, yeah, can you read the processor speed from Best Buy sticker? Do you think any reasonable person could read those numbers - on a TV?

I didn't think so. Of course, the Apple faithful are mad because some Mac-fanboy zoomed in at 10000% and extrapolated the specs of the Macbook Pro in question (to be the 2.53GHz model) and then got in a tizzy because the 2.53Ghz model is now $1699.... which is pedantic since the 2.66Ghz model is still $1999 and you can't read the specs on the Best Buy tag anyway!

In other words, the complaint is really that those blurry-and-unreadable-specs are outdated.

That's it?!? Are you serious? I think that qualifies you for super-Apple fanboy status if the worst offense MS has done is that some blurry text is outdated.

As long as Apple is selling 15.4" Macbook Pro's for $1999 that commercial is accurate.

Apple's legal department doesn't have a leg to stand on, and MS knows it - which is why they can keep running the ad and can laugh in Apple's face.

AS THEY SHOULD.

That is a completely subjective statement there. I have used both and I didn't think either one provided a significantly better experience than the other. In fact, I think PCs have come a LONG way since the days I first started with them. There are less compatibility problems with the hardware and the software has become MUCH better. Out of all of my non-technical friends and family, none of them complain that a Windows based PC is difficult to use. While I think the iPhone is quite an amazing product, there is simply no denying that you pay a premium for Apple products and since they are very closed systems, you have substantially less freedom with them. RE: Didn't happen
By TEAMSWITCHER on 7/16/2009 8:54:26 PM , Rating: 2
Windows 7 does offer some competition (about f'ing time) to Mac OS X but it will not slow the penetration of the Mac. Macs have so much more going for them.

HP, DELL, and the rest are still making notebooks like they did 6 years ago - thick plastic shells. With 3 out of 4 computers sold being notebooks, you think they would have been more innovative. Apple switched to pressed aluminum cases in 2003 and now are using an aluminum unibody construction, which is light years ahead of the plastic shell.

The MacBook air is so advanced, it may be years before the PC world catches up to its revolutionary form factor. If you think the Dell Adamo is competition for it, check the specs again, it gets spanked by the MacBook Air.

The iLife applications are also much better that any crap-ware included with PC's. The Time Machine feature is full system back-up software with incremental updates and undelete. Windows 7 Business has a back up feature and a previous versions feature, but it is barely share-ware quality. I expected more from Microsoft.

Finally, the Mac has one feature that I am still waiting for in Windows - decent printing. I am completely fed up with stuck print jobs (that you can't delete in human time) and vanishing printers. When the MacBook searches for network printers it actually finds them. I have never, ever, seen that feature work on any version of Windows, even 7. You can also print to PDF without the need for additional software. How much does adobe acrobat cost?

Now before you go into a gaming tirade, understand that I don't play games - I haven't the time. So the "It Don't Play Crysis" argument is well, kind of lost on me.

You are an idiot to say the Macbook Air is anything but an overpriced gimpbook.

Go and look up the Dell E4200 or Toshiba R600 or Thinkpad X200s. They all use a combination of magnesium alloy and carbon fiber to make the gimped Macbook Air feel like a fat pig. There are far higher PCs in the world and much more choice. But just because all you know like an idiot noob is to buy your PC at Best Buy, all you get is cheap plastic machines.

RE: Didn't happen
By Targon on 7/17/2009 8:39:16 AM , Rating: 1
Mac is cheaper? No, but it may be cheaper than going with something like an Alienware machine. The problem that many people have is that they look at an Apple, and then go to the overpriced places to get something similar, rather than looking at what you CAN get for the money.

The only benefit that Apple has is that it comes out of the box a bit smoother(the MacOS logo flying through space rather than a "please wait"). Besides that, the "computer" inside the monitor thing may seem nice until you decide you want/need to upgrade your computer.

You can get a 23 inch flat panel display for $300 or less these days, so, Intel i7 or AMD Phenom 2 955 based PC with Samsung 2370HD display for under $1500.

Hmmmm, Apple is only offering the Core 2 Duo based machines, dual-core only, no quad core....and how much do they charge? For their $2199 top end iMac, you get a dual-core processor and 24 inch screen....and you think a PC would be more expensive? Oh, and if you want Radeon 4850 that adds $50.

So, how about you price out a machine with the following:
Core 2 Duo E8600(3.33GHz dual core)
4GB of RAM
Radeon 4850 graphics

$1419 for a Windows Vista Home Premium based machine with a high end Asus brand motherboard(the Rampage Formula Intel X48 chipset)

Can you even find something over $1500 even from a high end overpriced place that would give you that sort of machine on the Windows side of things?

Now, Software...have you noticed that the Mac doesn't include EVERYTHING for that $2200 you are paying? So, there are additional charges on top of that.

Apple WAS doing better last year before the economy went into the toilet, but these days, Apple is getting hit harder because of the price premium on their products.

Ok, so let's look at the low end from Apple:
20 inch display
2.66GHz dual core processor
Geforce 9400M graphics
2GB of memory

All of that for $1199

Ok, let's look at the price of that setup on the Windows side:
Core 2 Duo E7300 processor
2GB RAM
Geforce 9400GT video card.

In looking around, It is getting closer,
Now, from that perspective you may end up with it being closer in price($1014 for the Windows based machine, same motherboard from above)

So, where is this garbage that Mac is cheaper?

There may not be as large a difference in price between the low end iMac and a regular Windows based machine, but Apple still has extra charges there, and if you want all the extras, like MobileME, or iWork, or any of the other applications, be prepared to pay, the way you would on the Windows side.

Apple vs. Windows is really an almost religious decision. Each person will have his/her preference, but Apple has zelots who PUSH Apple products, even when Apple is not the best choice.

Think of this like what you see with Islam, where the base religion is preferred for followers, but you have a bunch of fanatics who are willing to kill(which goes against the base concepts of the religion) in the name of their religion for NO good reason(killing those who are at war with your religion is different than just killing in the name of religion).

There is nothing inherently wrong with MacOS or Apple, except that Apple charges more money for their products and is not any better or worse overall than competing products. Every OS and platform has strengths and weaknesses, and it is almost pathetic that some people just can't understand and accept this. But, to try to claim that Apple does not charge more for their hardware than for a comparable Windows based computer is foolish, and just flat out wrong.

If you want to compare other industries, you can do comparisons of Ferrari to Porsche, since both offer high performance cars. Most would say that trying to compare a KIA to one of these companies would not be fair. BUT, picture if you could buy a KIA, for the price of a KIA, but can compete with Ferrari or Porsche when it comes to performance? Suddenly, it becomes a question, not just of performance or quality, but do you want to pay the money for an expensive brand name when you can buy something comparable for much less money.

Apple vs. Alienware might be a valid comparison, but don't ignore the fact that you can get a machine for far less money if you build it yourself, or go with a company like Cyberpowerpc.com. Just because you CAN overpay for a Windows machine does not mean you are forced to. With Apple, you are FORCED to buy an Apple computer if you want to run MacOS legally.

Agreed, but Apple nor Microsoft care, they are targeting the consumers that buy stuff blindly, based on what they see on TV. Which unfortunately is the majority of folks out there. (Kinda like 97.945% of the Obama voters!<---- True stat by the way based on polls I have taken in my area. <---- No for real, it is true.)
