GT5 delayed again

It's almost comical now that we expect delays when it comes to Gran Turismo 5. While not as long-winded as Duke Nuke Forever [and ever], GT5 has endured numerous delays.

We thought that there was light at the end of the tunnel when Polyphony Digital announced an early November launch date for the racing simulator back in June. However, that date with destiny simply wasn't meant to be.

The following statement was posted to the Official PlayStation Blog today:

We can confirm that Gran Turismo 5 will not be available this November 2nd, but the game’s release will be coming this holiday season.

We sincerely apologize to GT fans for the delay, however, creator Kazunori Yamauchi and the team at Polyphony Digital want to make certain they are creating the perfect racing experience, and we are confident that this ambitious game will exceed expectations when it launches.

We’ll have more information for you in the near future.

It's unfortunate that eager gamers have to endure yet another delay for the popular racing simulation series, but let's hope that Polyphony Digital can deliver the game before the year's end (just don't hold your breath).

You do know that Gran Turismo is a racing simulator... right?

I have no problem with the delay. It's like Valve said: ten years from now, no one will care how many times you pushed your release date. They will care if you released a good game.

you have a bit to learn about the business world, my friend. valve works for themselves, so they have the luxury to delay as they please. polyphony works for sony, so if they are not producing, sony is losing tens of millions of dollars per year on development costs, besides the fact that their fanbase is dwindling due to disappointment. from a business standpoint, gt5 is a completely failed investment at this point. maybe it will have some possibility of recouping half the dev costs by the time it eventually ships. it will NOT be profitable after licensing and advertising is factored in.

Heads-up: Valve pays its staff too. Self-publishing just means the shouting match stays in one building.

and you have a bit to learn about how many people want this game.

I know about 50-100 PS3 owners and i don't know 1 that isn't going to get this game. At the end of the day the only people who will now not buy this because of the delays are the spoilt little brats who sulk because they didn't get their way (ie. interwebbing nerds) everyone in the real world will whinge a little bit, and wait a bit longer.

And Sony will make their money back, if not in the insane amount of units they are gonna ship then from the multitude of microtransactions no doubt included later on; this game is designed to be out for a long time and with the online power of the sony store they could easily release car packs every year or so.

Sony should fire their board of directors and hire you. Your able to determine cost analysis on a product you have never seen.

It's only important that it gets out before the holiday, if it was a matter of adding more content I'm sure it would be out. Sounds more like some last minute tweaking.

I am not saying they should do half a job and release an unfinished product. I am saying that Poliphony Digital sets the bar on this extremely high and many delays are likely just them reaching for that bar they set. We aren't on the team and can only speculate sure, but one thing that's not speculation is that they have had a playable demo and actually released game that's come and gone as a greatest hit awhile ago. It was done enough then for release and this is the same game only larger. In a way, it really does come down to content, deadlines, and project management. Don't forget the more you add the more you tweak.

Exactly how do you figure that Poly is costing Sony "tens of millions" per year?

The average yearly salary for a game developer is $60k it would take a team of 166 developers to even hit "ten million", let alone "tens of millions". At last check, they only had 110 employees including contract test drivers, HR and janitorial staff.

The clocks (and therefor the costs) of licensing and advertising for GT5 don't start until the time they actually release the game. Check out the filings for any of the companies involved in the game and you'll see that they haven't begun registering royalties from Sony beyond the initial signing costs.

Way to sh!t out your mouth! :D

Sad how some people like to post just for the sake of posting, without really checking background.

GT sales so far:

* Gran Turismo – 10,850,000
* Gran Turismo 2 – 9,370,000
* Gran Turismo 3 A-spec – 14,890,000
* Gran Turismo Concept Series – 1,560,000
* Gran Turismo 4 “Prologue” – 1,350,000
* Gran Turismo 4 – 10,980,000
* Gran Turismo 5 “Prologue” – 4,650,000
* Gran Turismo PSP – 1,800,000
* Total – 55,450,000

Last two games (both released after PS3 was launched), Prologue and GT PSP, alone have sold almost 6.5 million copies (not to mention that GT4 and GT3 are still selling as Platinum titles).

As comparison, all Forza titles so far (3 of them, I think) have sold around 10 million of copies total.

I would say that Polyphony has more than adequate cash flow from their existing titles - even without Sony jumping in with fresh money - to take their time and achieve level of features and optimisation they are striving for. And I'm really happy they are doing that. Considering how great looking and driving (though both car and track limited) Prologue looked and felt when released, I'm really excited to see what 2+ extra years of development will provide.

Forza is an excellent sim series. My brother exclusively (in terms of racing sims) played Gran Turismo, until he got a 360. Even coming from a long line of GT titles, he loves Forza.

Basically the sales numbers are a result of the lack of racing sim fans who own 360. There is a much bigger sim audience on the PS. I'm one of the few I know who bought a racing wheel for the 360 for Forza.

So the delays won't hurt GT, since its not a cross platform title and has no competition on the PS3. But that doesn't mean the delay isn't hurting the PS3 as a platform. For their sake, I hope they get it out before Christmas.

Yeah Forza has always been a better simulation than GT. Will GT5 change this? Maybe. We'll have to see.

RE: pathetic

That is questionable.

So far, Forza was always running on better hardware than GT. Forza 1 on original XBOX was competing with GT3 and GT4 running on PS2. It is hardly a secret that XBOX had more processing and graphics power, even more RAM.

I recall reading somewhere that GT4 on PS2 was limited to 6 car races because engine could not calculate physics for more cars in real time while keeping steady 60fps. Things like realistic damage model were simply out of question for a console with 300MHz CPU, 32MB of RAM and 4MB of video RAM.

But still, much as I remember, content available on GT3 and GT4 - cars, tracks, events - was untouchable by any other racing game.

I recall playing GT4 frequently for more than 6 months and still not finishing it.

Forza 2 and 3 were released on X360 and there was nothing on PS3 to compete with them, short of Prologue - which was not much more than stable beta release.

So basically, GT5 will be first real GT running on comparable hardware to Forza 3 and upcoming Forza 4. I'm really looking forward to check them all :)

True, GT5 before Christmas would boost PS3 sales. I'm pretty sure there will/would be console+game bundle once game is out.

But on a long run, having pre-Christmas GT5 with bad reviews (due to bugs - I don't think they are putting more content at this point anyway) would help game and platform sales more than having it after Christmas with raving reviews.

i'm sorry but forza is absolutely terrible
i love my sim games i love my arcade games and i love my inbetweeners (especially those...grid is amazing) because they each bring something to the table that's expected; sims for realism and a sense of danger, arcades for a sense of fun and inbetweeners for a sense of fun and danger while playing fast and loose

forza combined all the worse aspects - an over-simulation that was no fun with a sense of speed that was way off the mark..forza 3 especially for me was unplayable - how many people have gone into a corner thinking they were doing 60 and were actually doing 100 ? the sense of speed was just..shit!

and don't get me started on split screen, it was like a really bad emulation on sub-par hardware

GT5 is not even a sim it's just a noob game for dumbed down casual PS3 owners.

They didn't even get the engine sound even close to right for the cars, plus the half assed throwing in of physics, car damage, and other catching up GT5 is trying to do to the games that have passed it by isn't working. Polyphony should just embrace their noob-ness, that is their audience. The redneck PS3 console fanboy. But hey maybe that's why they got NASCAR.

RE: pathetic
By nikon133 on 10/14/2010 6:09:36 AM , Rating: 2
Really?

I'm finding it quite amusing that GT5 Prologue sales in Europe are 2.5 times stronger than sales in North America, while Europe has only 1.4 the number of North America citizens.

Anecdotal as it may sound, it seems to me rednecks are more into some other racing games... while people from places where real sport cars are being made seem to fancy Gran Turismo much more.

Now back to the business... I (still) don't have 360 so I can't give Forza a go... but luckily for me, some of my colleagues have 360, some have PS3 and one lucky bas*ard has both. I can already see some nice comparisons being held at his place once GT5 is released. Until then, I will hold my judgement... and play GTR2 for some real realism.

And one more note: while damage model (done right) is nice addition to any racing game, it is not proof of ultimate realism. Race Driver: Grid has it. Heck, Burnout games have it.

GT sales numbers are so fake. GT5 Prologue charted in one NPD top ten, where it sold around 200,000 copies. It never was in the top 10 again.

Yet according to fanboys and the ever popular wikipedia, it has sold 4.6 million.

Sorry but I'm just tired of the inflated GT sales figures lies.

Lets just look at it logically, according to that, GT5P has sold 23 times it's initial NPD sales month. Lets apply a similar figure to Halo 3 (3.3 million sold first NPD month). Using the same ratio, Halo 3 has sold 23X3.3 or 75.9 million copies so far.

Of course the fanboy will now say that's ridiculous, but I think the onus is on you to explain why GT5P's supposed sales are so much higher than any actual recorded sales.

Of course I understand the USA isn't the whole world, and GT5P does have that advantage of selling well in Japan. Nevertheless, it doesn't get you anywhere near the numbers required to make sense to the Halo 3 comparison.

The bottom line is, GT series has sold half or less the figures fanboys claim. The rest are sitting in a landfill or dont exist. Absolutely zero trustworthy recorded sales figures (Media Create, Famitsu, NPD, Chart Track/GFK in Europe, etc) back up the ridiculous inflated GT "sales figures" commonly posted on the internet. all they are is recorded shipments from Sony, and I guarantee 2/3 of them were sent back.

These are the same PS3 fanboys who claim "GT is a bigger series than Halo" When Halo Reach outsold GT5P nearly 20:1 it's first NPD month. Even allowing GT is bigger in Europe, and Japan, there's just no way.

A couldn't care less about Wiki... but according to this article, Sony released Gran Turismo numbers end of last year:

http://www.gamespot.com/psp/driving/granturismo/ne...

There is also link to Polyphony Digital's web giving nice break on GT games sold in different markets:

http://www.polyphony.co.jp/english/list.html

According to that site, GT5 Prologue sold total of 1,160,000 copies (out of 4,950,000) in North America. Now... info is from June 2010. GT5P was released back in April 2008. That basically means that, on average, GT5P had to sell only 44,000 copies a month to get that result in US... so to me, number of 200,000 in its best month sounds OK.

It is interesting that you acknowledge US is not the whole world, yet you seem to be a bit unwilling to accept it. GT5P sold "only" 700,000 copies in Japan, with majority of sales coming from Europe (2,940,000 copies).

I bet you and anyone willing 100$ that GT5 will be profitable. This will be the best selling racing game after 2 weeks.

You can factor in licensing and advertising all you want, this game will be profitable by year's end for Polyphony Digital and Sony.

Before the end of the year 1M+ copies plus a lot of new PS3s will have been sold.

That's because official release dates have been few and far between.

Like Blizzard, Polyphony is such a golden goose that "when it's ready" is an acceptable answer when the publisher asks "when can we release it?"

...or you can have it right now.

Agreed, this is one of the longer delays, but I'd always rather have a quality release than some broken product that for numerous game pubilsher/developers seems to now be the norm.

It's either Mark Rein or Cliffy B. who when asked when a game is coming out always reply "When it's done." But that's Epic who cannot be compared to other developers, in my opinion. Same with Valve...except they can't seem to update without breaking...

Depends much on why they are actually delaying it IMO...

Say if it's only to tack on, at end-stage development with consequential need to re-polish for, an immature new technology for some additional bells and whistles and marketing edge... then I'd rather have it now.
