Wii to top both Xbox 360 and PS3 in sales

Anyone even remotely familiar with the video game industry can predict the Nintendo Wii will be top-selling console of 2008, but exactly by how much is analyst territory. Daniel Ernst of Hudson Square Research has put to paper his predictions of the worldwide sales of all three current generation consoles.

According to GameDaily, Ernst forecasts that Microsoft will sell 11.2 million units of the Xbox 360 worldwide, Sony will sell 12.5 million PS3s and Nintendo will sell 23 million Wiis.

"Microsoft got the jump on the industry with a one-year headstart, but nine months after its the launch, the Nintendo Wii overtook the Xbox 360 on a global basis. While the PS3, has struggled out of the gate, we note that since last fall, the console has been outselling the Xbox 360 in Europe, and in the first two months of this year has even outsold the Xbox 360 on its home turf, in the U.S. (In Japan, overtaking the Xbox 360 was almost immediate). With its strong slate of software scheduled for the coming year, we expect a material acceleration for the PS3 this year, but we believe the Wii will sell more than the PS3 and Xbox 360 combined this year," he commented.

Ernst numbers of Xbox 360 and PS3 combined add up to 23.7 million, not quite less than the 23 million Wii project, but certainly not far off.

Although the sales split in other regions of the world differ greatly, the sales figures thus far in 2008 don’t show the Wii selling more than its competitors combined. During January, the PS3 sold only 5,000 fewer units than the Wii. But in February, the Wii widened the gap selling 432,000 units, as compared to 280,800 for PS3 and 254,600 Xbox 360 consoles.

With the release of highly anticipated titles such as Grand Theft Auto IV, which will not be on the Wii, it may be too early to declare a sales victor for 2008.

Places like Microcenter, Walmart, Circuit City, Best Buy, and Amazon are out of stock all the frickin' time with the Wii, and even though this may be true, they still outsell PS3s and Xbox 360s which are in stock almost all the time?

It should be noted that the 360 has been pretty much impossible to get all year due to an inventory crunch. I think the PS3 has had spurts of low availability too.

So no ones buying them but they sold over a quarter million of them in February? Must be one of those string theory equations.

No, it's the magic bullet theory!
That's how they do it.

In all honesty though, the 360 is selling and IS available. I haven't been to my local Bestbuy for at least a week now, so I just went to bestbuy.com, punched in my zip code, and all 6 stores in my area have them in stock available for in store pickup.

I have not seen a shortage of it. I think its just a 360 fanboy rumor spread to explain why the PS3 is out selling it.

You don't see a shortage of it now, and that's expected. We checked when MS put the announcement out and could not find them. We're talking about a four week period that ended three weeks ago.

I actually did not believe the original shortage article at first, until I personally asked a friend who is a Manager at BB. Depending on where you lived there WAS apparently a shortage that lasted 2-3 weeks.

Just so people know during shortages and depending on the store, they do not put out all the stock at the same time, you could potentially go to bestbuy once a week during the shortage, and you could have seen an available console every time. The same thing happened for a good 6-8 months after the wii release with Wii controllers. They do this so that people can not buy a product that has a shortage in mass quantities, to sell off at a higher price.

Go sit in a corner. Why would he come straight out and lie? Whats the advantage does he get by telling us all something that is not true. As a DT editor you should give him the benefit of the doubt, as he probably did some research into the matter. Something I really doubt pretty much anyone else here did. Unless you can find some proof contradicting what he has to say, his word means more to me than yours.

Ok, now your contradicting yourself.
First you said the shortage has been all year, now your saying it was only a 4 week shortage that ended 3 weeks ago?

Last I look, we are about 15 weeks into the year. If we discount the last 3 weeks which you said do not count, then we are left with about 12 weeks. 4 out of 12 is a far cry from 100% (all year).

However it really is 4 out of 15 because you said ALL year originally. Unless you wrote your post 3 weeks ago, which you didn't.

Just to clear things up! :-)

I keep seeing this excuse, but I have yet to see a place sold out of a 360. Maybe its a regional thing, but then again, every online retailer has stock as well. Same goes for PS3 (although this is the first time I've heard someone say the PS3 has supply issues since a little bit past launch).

It was/is fud. Day after this 'shortage' rumor appeared in Jan/Feb? I was at BB & circuit city and found plenty, looked online and could buy a 360 at will. Amazon had a wait I think out of all the places I looked. DailyTech is a 360 fanboy haven, so they'll be claiming shortages for awhile.

360 had a year headstart, you can't expect them to keep the momentum up forever. It's sold damn good. A must buy game(think halo) or price drops(think PS2) is only way they will get back to big numbers.

We checked four cities when Microsoft made the announcement (mid-February), and didn't see any need to check further -- it's not like those are backwater population centers.

I'm pretty sure if there were hundreds of 360s sitting on store shelves in mid-February to early-March there'd be several stories on it.

My local Target had so mand H3 and Elite Xboxes that they had to set up a pyramid thing of boxes in the electronics section. Then on top of that there are 2-4 boxes behind the glass like in a normal display.

I've also seen at least 6 H3 Xboxes at my local Sam's Club (lol, and they had a demo H3 box sitting out behind the demo TV for anyone to steal).

I remember this b/c I got a Halo 3 controller/H3 wireless earpiece combo (which they also had 8 of of) for $100. Steal!

This was all during Januaryish times.

However it does make sense that there would have been a shortage on 360s especially since the 360 was outselling the PS3 right before the new year and then all of the sudden the 360 sales dropped below the PS3 sales.

For where I am, San Diego county, Wii is almost impossible to find at any time. XBox and PS3 are available. For Christmas, Gamestop didnt' even take pre-orders because as soon as they receive them they're gone. I got two Wii's for the nices and nephews by showing up early on the same day they received them.

To clariy, I mean San Diego county to include many cities that I've called to check inventory on for several weeks/months lol. It's not a walk in fluke of the day that the store didn't have them.

This may have been a valid reason if MS came out with it prudently. But no, they waited until two minutes before NPD comes out, twice, to make such a statement.

If there were shortages why not announce them, not a month later when NPD comes out? Public companies offer guidance and tidbits like ths all the time. MS waited until they had NPD in their hands, both times, before announcing. I'm calling bullshit on this one.

They also sold less this year than last a year into manufacturing. How do you explain that?>

RE: Amazing...

I'm not sure the reasoning why Microsoft timed their announcement the way they did, and I can hardly know or care why they sold fewer to manufacturing than the year before. All I do know is that when they claimed there was a shortage, we did our own fact checking and were able to confirm it.

I'm sure if you call any Babbages/EB/Gamestop employee and ask if he had 360s at the end of February he'll say no. We did.

Yes and if you look at all those locations, they always have tons of stock of accessories and games. The bread and butter of the gaming market.

Why don't these companies find out what consoles game sales are? So far, 100% of the ppl I talk with (over about 100 now), who own a Wii, stopped playing it after a couple months.

Also after a month or two, both Microsoft and Sony was able to fix their production issues. All the while, lowering prices. So what keeps Nintendo from doing the same? For a console that has less power than the original Xbox, yet costs twice the price, feels like a ripoff.

The reason the Wii sells is not because of epic games, power, etc..its because it fits with a modern adult lifestyle. I played games my entire life from my Atari as a grade schooler in the 80's to my PS2. But lately my job, my marriage and my children eat more time and I slowly realized the pile of epic, fun games piling up on my shelf with shrink wrap on them...

The Wii and DS are now the systems that get the most attention, because they specialize in short, gratifying experiences. I can play a DS during my lunch hour and I can come home to play Wii sports/Smash Bros/Mario Galaxy/etc... without feeling I will need to set time aside from my responsibilities. A quick 15 or 20 minutes, save and pick up later when time permits. I love Final Fantasy and other great games, but i just dont have time to fit them in my life anymore.

I'm not interested in casual games regardless of how much time I have to play. What helps is a good SAVE feature-something more PC and handheld games have (and the Playstation Portable and DS don't even need one, as both have sleep modes). So something like Wii Sports isn't going to entertain me regardless.

And I'm not sure how Super Mario Galaxy provides "a quick 15-20 minutes..." That's something you're going to need to sit down with for a fairly long chunk of time, without even knowing how long it'll be before you can save. No different than Final Fantasy or any other game made for people who like games on the Playstation 3 or 360.

You obviously have not played Super Mario Galaxy for a reasonable amount of time. I got many a 5-10 quicky in before the wife finished dinner when I got home from work. Spare us the pessimism. Nobody is forcing you to buy a Wii, so just don't... pretty simple.

Actually I bought it at launch. It's my favorite Wii game so far.

And I'll say it again-this is not a casual game. The claim that this is somehow great for people who want to play in short bursts is certainly less true than any game with a "save anywhere" feature or a game for the PSP or DS that can be put to sleep.

By Fallen Kell on 4/8/2008 12:56:23 PM , Rating: 3
You do know you save/can save after every "star" you find right? And that it takes at most 10-15 minutes to finish a stage and find the star right? Or havn't you played the game before...

I would also speculate that the market is fairly saturated with owners of the other game consoles that are now turning their attention to the Wii. I'm sure that's not the only reason, but it's certainly a part of what we're seeing.

Second, while I don't know the validity of this chart, this web site does track video game sales. http://www.vgchartz.com/

If you don't believe those numbers, do a google search on the monthly NPD numbers for North America and Media Create releases a weekly sales chart for Japan. Not sure who releases the charts for Europe and other territories.

Toddler Beaten, Killed with Game Controller

A sad statement on humanity, as in Pennsylvania a two-year-old was beaten and killed by her mother's boyfriend - with a video game controller. Still worse, it was reported that the boyfriend had abused the child previously, yet the mother had not left him.

I wonder if he used the Wii, xbox, PS2 or PS3 controller to kill this 2 year old with. OMG where's that lawyer that says video games cause violence. Glad to see we're selling game consoles that are at least as lethal as firearms, aren't you? I mean hell, I see the reason behind calling them dual-shock controllers now. Jerks

Well, It is now my job to dispell this rumor that idiots who don't know @#$% spread around the internet as a pacifier or balm to make themselves feel better.

Idiots, the Market isn't saturated. The 360 sold 11 million in the US and 18 million worldwide. How the F___ is the market saturated when the PS1 sold over 100 million, and the PS2 sold over 120 million and counting, and the NES sold some 80 million. I love how XBOX idiots come here and say everyone has an XBox so therefore they had nothing better to do than to buy a PS3. The market is still still has 75% of its sales in the future. Let me say it again, the Market has 75% of its sales upcoming.

Therefore, If One company sells more than another, It is NOT because of saturation. I would believe shortage more so than the Saturation BS.

As for Shortage, Nice Try Microsoft. I got to bestbuy once a week, at various times when I have to go to target, the electronic fan of me always go and check that section. I've never gone to bestbuy, circuit city, Fye, Target or similar stores and NOT has rows of 360s up for sale. And like someone else before me said. Places like Best Buy has a Pyramid set up for XBOX Halo 3 edition throughout the holidays and first part of Jan and Feb.

The real reason why PS3 sold more than the 360 is because Blu-Ray won, people are more and more realizing that is the Complete Home System and a steal to be both a blu-ray player and a console. Alo, just like the 360 had a good second year, the PS3 has started it's second year and sales will increase. Combine that with some price cuts that made it more affordable and boom you get your results. Reality of the situation was The 360 really was destined to be the 3rd and last place system because it wasn't as high end as the PS3, and wasn't as cheap and casual as the wii. It was stuck between a rock and a hard place. It finding itself losing has nothing to do with it coming out first because the PS1 came out before the N64, and the PS2 came out before the gamecube and XBOX, that didn't stop it from always dominating its era from start to finish.

By afkrotch on 4/9/2008 12:01:10 PM , Rating: 2
It's called, stuff gets old and breaks. The PS2 has been out since 2000. Do you think that a console bought then would last 8 years? I wouldn't expect it to. I won't say that's why there are over 120 million sold, but it's a small contributing factor. I'd probably say at most, 10-15 million were bought to replace an out-of-warranty broken PS2.

As for shortages, the market isn't the same going from state to state, let alone city to city. My hometown isn't large by any means. Roughly 75k ppl. Same with another city about 10 miles away. We constantly move between the two cities, as certain things sell at one location, but not the others. They have a Walmart, we don't. We have a Best Buy, they don't. Our Best Buy has at most, 2 in stock at a time. Pretty much the same as any other store. They don't sell extremely well. Still too high of a price for majority of our population. So the stores don't bother replenishing their stocks.

Unless these console prices drop, I don't expect the 360, PS3, or Wii to break the 100 million sales record (in shortest time) of the PS2.

By eye smite on 4/9/2008 12:59:37 PM , Rating: 2
Hmm, perhaps I should have stated that it's saturated with the people that really wanted one. Since the PS3 and Xbox360 don't seem to be attracting as many buyers as the PS1 and PS2 did. Consoles that are saturated into the market and most likely allowing people to say " meh, why do I need a PS3, xbox or wii when this one still works fine". Now, is that difficult for you to see? Or should I explain it to you in an email in one syllable words?

Solaris and Defender are still awesome and incredibly fun games to this day.

They came out for the Atari 2600 years ago... and were very simple.

I think the true testament to a consoles success is - will its games that came out years ago, still contain the same charm and excitement they were able to create then - now.

Good gaming is good gaming, no matter what the graphics look like. I think you're right and the Wii has managed to capture this similar property that has been all but forgotten from years past.

But at the same time games have been getting shorter, with most running 6 to 20 hours. Those of us who "want to get our money's worth" must rely on RPGs to satisfy our craving for a satisfying experience. The only alternative would be to play the game many times through with varying "hardness" levels (easy, normal, hard). If the variance is just the number of shots it takes to kill an enemy, or the number of shits it takes to get killed, then what good is it?

I curently own every Nintendo console ever made. I love my 360 & PS3, bought the Wii for my 10 year old, & I must say nothing about it's Gamecube like graphics, colorful games impresses me. I like Wii sports, but can't play any other games with the wand. I like VC cause it has allowed me to catch up on some TB Graph 16, Neo Geo games I missed, but it really has no appeal to me. I picked up Mario Galaxy for my child as she wanted it for Xmas & I really can't even play that one with the wand. I just wish they wouldn't force the motion controls on all the games as I am a traditional gamer who really doesn't need it, as far as it outselling both the Ps3 & 360, I surely get that as it has that everyone feel to it, is the cheapest & all, so I get that, I just want more out of consoles, like HD, 5.1 sound, but my 10 year old loves it. The way I look at it, Sony is competing with MS, as the 360 is competing with the PS3 & the wii caters to a totally different market alltogether.

Regardless if you want that in a Console or not, the 200 dollar price point, and the fact that Parents can now play against their kids, is the selling point and why its doing so well. The 'cherry on top' is that Parents dont have to worry about Content with the Wii. There is no XBL live chat with 1337's cursing a storm (or with Playstation home).

Nintendo went bottom line, and they made a Cheap and innovative console that takes zero skill to play. Parents, Kids, Grandparents alike can pick it up and play (Whether you want your grandparent playig your console is another story though!).

If that were the case, a cellphone would be the best gaming machine around. Madden wouldn't sell a bajillion copies. Companies like EA would go under.

I don't doubt a cellphone could be a great mobile gaming device, but there has not been a company that has devised a truly great convergence device...Just because the current environment does not have a device that meets the criteria, does not mean one wont come along. Nokia tried to and failed with the N-Gage, but I do not doubt that somebody will "iPhone" mobile gaming at some point and prove your point valid.

The Wii vs PS3/360 argument is the embodiment of the adage Different Strokes, Different Folks. My values (and many others) are just different than the traditional gaming crowd, of which I used to be. I am glad there are two camps that cater to different value sets, because I can stay a gamer, without sacrificing my family and career priorities.

"Anyone even remotely familiar with the video game industry could predict that the Nintendo Wii will be top-selling console of 2008 "

"With the releases of such highly anticipated titles such as Grand Theft Auto IV, which will not be on the Wii, it may be too early to declare a sales victor for 2008 ."

I think it's a safe guess that a good chunk of people, who bought a Wii, could care less about Grand Theft Auto IV not being available.

Yeah, like everyone under 18 who's not even allowed to play it by law (snicker).

Doubt big N cares though, their games are targetted to a younger demo.

There is no law that restricts the playing of "M" rated games by minors. And when I last checked, Nintendo targets everyone with a pulse.

I see what you're getting at, but it was simply a comment saying that it may be a bit rash to say that the Wii will outsell both the 360 and PS3 combined. Even the analyst's own numbers have the Wii matching both consoles, at best.

Will the Wii be the top selling console of 2008? Probably. Will it sell more than both PS3 and 360 combined? I don't think so.

"add up to 23.7 million, not quite less than the 23 million Wii project, but certainly not far off."

Depends for whom you work or are fan of... that difference back on the HD-DVD Blu-ray war could be presented as a major blow given by one side to the other.

Anyway while Nintendo may still sell more consoles what about the games for it?

The Wii's software sales have been leading consistently for a while now. Do some research (NPD, sales tracking sites such as VGChartz).

RE: not quite...
By omnicronx on 4/8/2008 5:23:18 PM , Rating: 2
No its not heh, add up all the games they have, and the 360 just edges out the wii. But as Wii sports is NOT a software sale, as it comes with your console, the 360 is still very closely outselling the wii in software sales. (Wii play should not really be included either as it really just comes with a remote for 10 bucks, but since it does not come with the console, it still must be considered a software sale) By the way wii sports and wii play combined account for 30 million in software sales on VGchartz, with their to 50 having around 90 million sales in total. So in reality, the 360 has still outsold the wii by a considerable margin, and software profits will be much higher for microsoft.

If Nintendo was in the position you are saying, they would probably be tooting their horn saying so..

RE: not quite...
By tfranzese on 4/8/2008 8:32:33 PM , Rating: 2
You're only partially correct. And I'm not comparing lifetime software sales, that would be rather dumb considering the extra year Microsoft has had. I'm looking at weekly sales, and the only way the 360 edges out recently is by discounting Wii Play.

3rd party games

When you're nintendo you dont need 3rd party devs. people still go ape$hit for mario games. Nintendo makes a game and puts mario in it... instant hit. Personally i've never been a mario fan, but many people love that stuff.

We have a PS3, a 360 and 2 Wii's here. I actually spend more time playing games on the 360, more time watching movies on the PS3 and my sone and his friends play the wii(s).

By cmdrdredd on 4/8/2008 4:30:48 PM , Rating: 3
I know 5 people with a Wii, none of them have touched it in a year. I know 5 people with either a 360 or PS3 or both and they get used every day because of either online play, better games, or multiple usage of the console. I myself can stream movies from my PC to my HDTV (anime mostly) on my Xbox or PS3. I also play more shooters and Those games which seem to lend themselves to the HD graohics and style of games found on the PS3 and 360.

So my point is, there's a reasonable number of Wiis out there that don't ever see use.

And?
By Chaser on 4/8/2008 2:30:52 PM , Rating: 1
The only similarity the Wii has to the other "Nex gen" consoles was it's relatively close release date. The Wii is cheaper, simpler, and appeals to a slightly different market. Therefore by no means is a Wii a fair or equal comparison of success in contrast to the PS3 or 360. I doubt you'll see many 360's or PS3's carried along to family reunions or sitting in the "Activity Hall" in a nursing home. I could care less if the Wii outsells both 10 to 1.

I agree, like I said I have all three of the consoles, & the Wii is only turned on by me every monday to check to see what classics releases, & to play with the little one but other than that, I really don't care how much more it sells. It should outsell the other consoles & Nintendo should be making money hands over fist as all they did was re-release the Gamecube in a smaller package, add some ram. They should be making money.

Should you mention Mario Kart will be released exclusively on Wii, and also accessories as cool as Wii Fit. This will continue to drive demand from casual gamers.

Wii sells like hotcakes

It took me a good 3 months from the moment I decided to buy a Wii to actually buying one. I've never seen it available outside of Costco. And when it's available at Costco B&M, it's sold out within the hour, 2 tops. I've seen it at Costco B&M twice, the 1st time around I didn't get it 'cause it wasn't on my wishlist.

Wii's target audience is everybody. It's about fun, the focus is not about competition and cussing at other kids on the other end of the mic.

They're sold out all the time because store employees are buying them before they hit the shelves, packaging them with the Wii Play disc and controller, and selling them on eBay to make a quick personal profit of $50-100.

My guess is you have only been looking at the big names and whats familure.

Have you guys looked at Opoona at all? You want something that takes time (20+ hours good enough for you, or would you rather want the 50+ hours?), leveling, new licenses... yeah. Its a full RPG. I've played three days from 10am-10PM (What? It was my days off!) and I have a lot of everything to go, but still have a ways to go in the story.

How about Metroid? I am sure you all remember Metroid! Yeah, its just as good now as then, with quite a lot of things extra to do.

Then they also have the VC where there are a lot of classic games on there.

I stayed outside of a BB with my brother to get the Wii on opening and then he sold it (as he needed the money (too bad I didn't have any)) and then I got mine again in June. However there were a few weeks where I didn't play but now I spend my free time either playing the wii, or playing a HL2 mod on the PC. (Mostly the Wii thanks to Opoona being quite addicting.)

I'm mostly unimpressed with it too, and agree that third party support has been lackluster. The thing has an available normal controller, and is technically a Gamecube basically with specs bumped up 50%, so really it should be a very solid gaming system. Yet other than Super Mario Galaxy, most games have been very underwhelming to me, both graphically and in terms of gameplay. If I didn't know better, I'd think the Gamecube was a more advanced system.

I can't at all agree about Super Mario Galaxy though. That's the first time I've genuinely loved a 3D Mario game. I still don't think it's on par with the 2D Mario games, but it's the first one that felt like it actually belonged in the series. IMO Super Mario Sunshine looked fantastic, but was WAAAAY too hard (Galaxy gets too hard later on, but at the end it's still easier than Sunshine is halfway through.) And 64 was okay, but I'd had my fill after a couple of days with it back in '96.

I also hate the way they do DRM on the virtual console games (where you can't transfer them to another system-why didn't they use an iTunes model where a user could deactivate a Wii so that they can activate a new one?) They've even got DRM on the SAVE files for crying out loud.

I *HATE* the focus on casual games, since I have no interest in them. Still, considering some of the amazing games the Gamecube had, and it's rapidly expanding install base, there's always the chance it'll get some real development. Cutting down a Playstation 3 game to shove it on the Wii doesn't really work though, nor does adding arbitrary "Wiimote" support. Just use the "classic" pad unless there's some useable way to use that "Wiimote".

The Wii isn't most appealing to readers on DailyTech (it would be the Xbox360 because of the games or the PS3 because of the multimedia capabilities). Those two systems are appealing to the gamer / techie niche (like a bmw 3 series for yuppies). While the nintendo wii is more appealing to a more broad audience (grandparents, parents, sisters, girlfriends, little kids - like a toyota camry). At the end of the day, Nintendo got it right as their profits go through the roof.

You're about half-right.

The part you're missing is that the Wii is selling on a gimmick, motion sensing, more than anything else. Which is why 3rd party dev's aren't doing so hot on it. People are buying it for the gimmick, and then shelving it. You don't hear people going "The games on Wii are great, it's soooo much better than anything else!" You hear "ZOMG it's motion sensing, it's like virtual reality!", which implies people are buying it for the wrong reasons.

Want proof? The financial markets recently downgraded Nintendo. No one gets downgraded because they've got a killer app. Only when something looked like a good idea, but now with some data behind it, it's turning out it doesn't have legs.

Wii's a gimmick.

I actually got to play the latest Super Smash Brothers this past weekend (I'm in the UK, and it's going to take a few months for them to translate the game into proper English or something before they can release it) and it's far far far far far better than the weak Gamecube game.

The Wii appeals to people with friends that come around often. It's great for parties. It's just that basement dwelling loners can't envision these things, but it's okay, they've got their online friends on XBox Live, or their WoW friends!

On the other hand, my Wii is standing unused right now due to time issues and work relocation hassle. Just as the list of Wii games I want to play grows longer and longer...

And I want to play GTA4 toooooo ahhhhh.

Their console sells well, but 3rd party developer are crying right now, cuz their games dont see on Wii.

ITs all just Marketing Hype.

My Wii has been collecting dust for almost a year. No good games to play, oh please dont tell me the newest smash bros crap, its the same shit like the last one with more characters. Wow, big deal.

I agree with this. Nothing on it appeals to me, & other than playing with my daughter who loves it, there is nothing on it other than VC games that I like. The reason I think the Wii has done so well is it was built for the casual market which far exceeds the hardcore group like myself, gamers with HDTVS, Theater systems, who want the best graphics & sound & don't mind paying for it. I say hats off to Nintendo for getting back on top, the consoles are selling but other than the Nintendo games, not much else is selling on it.

i think the wii has done well because it has gone back to basics too.

i'm sure that a lot of us here are late twenties/thirties and we've grown up with game consoles and they have matured with us.

But content wise, the wii is much more like the master system/nes/mega drive/snes era of games and they did well because there were lots of kids (us) who wanted to play those games then, just as they do now.

Since the playstation, consoles have "matured" and have moved with us, ignoring the original demographic who games consoles were designed for in the first place, the kids.

My main gripes with the wii are that it is rather expensive for what it is, especially when you buy a second set of controllers and the games are not that original even with the crowbared in wiimote control elements.

But kids don't care about either of these things as they don't pay for their toys (unlike us) and they haven't played console games for the last 30 odd years either.

just my opinion :)
