New phone will have an admirable spec except for a lowly 720p screen resolution

Amazon.com, Inc. (AMZN) has been rumored to be crafting a version of Fire OS -- its fork of Google Inc.'s (GOOG) ubiquitous Android -- to put on smartphones.  A new story by Boy Genius Report adds a few more details to the roundup of rumors regarding the upcoming release.

Here's what we know so far:

Via The Wall Street Journal
  • The phone will feature a glasses-free 3D interface (à la Nintendo Comp., Ltd.'s (TYO:7974) Nintendo 3DS).
  • It will likely launch in June 2014.
Via research note by KGI Securities (KGI Sec. Thailand PCL (BKK:KGI)) analyst Ming-Chi Kuo (widely regarded as the most accurate Apple, Inc. (AAPL) analyst):
  • It will launch between June and Aug. 2014.
  • Amazon will start component buying and production in Q2 2014
  • It will stock enough components to build 700k-1.2m handsets.
  • It will initially build 300-600k units in Q2, will build 2-3m total units in 2014.
  • Device will include front camera, rear camera, plus four other front-facing cameras for gesture based controls.
  • Plastic chassis
  • 4.7-inch display panel @ 300-320 ppi (which indicates 720p)
  • Qualcomm Inc. (QCOM) Snapdragon 801
  • Rear camera: 13 megapixel Exmor camera sensor by Sony Corp. (TYO:6758)
  • Front cameras: supplied by Primax Electronics Ltd. (TPE:4915)
  • Battery between 2,000 and 2,400 mAh
Via RE/Code:
  • 3rd party APIs will provide developer support
  • Amazon is wooing top developers
  • Mid-level API will translate Fire OS calls to Android calls
  • Low-level API will allow developers to leverage the device's 3D capabilities
Via BGR:
  • Memory: 2 GB DRAM
  • The phone's 3D will somehow avoid using the parallax barrier of past designs such as the Nintendo 3DS and the HTC Corp. (TPE:2498) EVO 3D.
  • 3D interface cameras at corners of screen are low-power infrared cameras
  • Screen elements follow your eyes
  • Lockscreen wallpaper scrolls with tilt
  • First generation model will be followed by budget variant
Here's some pictures from BGR, as well.  Note that the bulky polycarbonate case (which evokes Nokia Oyj.'s (HEX:NOK1Vtwo year old Lumia 900) is actually not part of the phone itself, but a protective covering that hides the phone's design.
