Nyko has announced an aftermarket cooling system for the Xbox 360 console

For all those gamers looking to increase their playing time without any interruptions or pesky meltdowns, Nyko has released a nice, stylish gadget for you. The new XBOX 360 Intercooler 360, is a compact snap-on forced-fan, which is now available for $19.99.  A few other siimilar devices, including the Pelican PL-3619, also sell for the same price but the Nyko is the only one so far that doesn’t look like a total eyesore either.

The idea behind the Intercooler is to simply attach on to the XBOX 360 and then cool the console by forcing air out of it through a snap-on attachment with its three fans.  According to Nyko’s tests, the Intercooler can reduce the systems internal temperature by two to ten degrees Fahrenheit. Not only does this then create better reliability but it could extend the life of components inside the system.

And since when has any legit review stated the X360 needs 3rd party cooling?

My power brick actually runs quite cool. Maybe MS redesigned it.... I dunno.

Mine too! I thought it was going to be really hot, after reading all the opinions about it. My powerbrick is cooler than most fan equipped PC power supplies, even after several hours of gaming. It's probably best described as luke warm.

The 360 itself does get considerably hotter, but not THAT hot.

Yeah, my brick hardly gets above room temperature. My 360 itself doesn't get hot, but it blows pretty hot air out the back.

I wonder if Nyko can make some CPU and GPU HSF's and cool them down to two to ten degrees fahrenheit as well.

No way!!

There is NO way this will cool down TO 2 to 10 degrees fahrenheit - never!!!

Not Applicable to all?
By solgae1784 on 4/1/2006 11:27:21 AM , Rating: 2
I heard that the later batches of xbox 360 actually doesn't have the heating problems like the first batches of xbox 360 did. So maybe it's not really applicable to everyone.

You heard wrong- although perhaps it isn't as bad as the earlier ones my still is scorching hot(didn't purhcase it until the announcement that Oblivion had gone gold).

Weird...I have one of the first batches and I've never had heat or any other issues with it. This is with using it 12+ hrs in a row on multiple occasions, and sometimes at night time I do forget to turn it off :p

Maybe I'm just lucky ;)

They all run hot... we already know that (mine can and will litterally heat up my room). The question at hand is whether MS did something to fix the heat related issues (eg. freezing and crashing). Just because it's hot doesn't mean it's still defective in design.

Well, some of the heating issues were discovered due to a piece of foil left on one of the heatsinks, anyhow not sure if there additional issues causing more heat than they should normally. Anyhow I did pick one of these up.

RE: Not Applicable to all?

The foil was supposed to be there. It was pretty obvious it wasn't designed to be removed when we saw the video showing how difficult it was to removes. Microsoft stated it was supposed to be there as well. It was there to protect the TIM so the heatsink could be removed and reinstalled without reapplying a thermal interface. Intel used something similar on their heatsinks at one point.

SOMETHING ABOUT THE GEEK IN ME WANTS THIS

Even though I'm sure it's noiser than the already noisy base 360, and for 19.99 how qaulity can it be?

I am willing to buy that for $19.95 but i still haven't had any heat issues or melt down with my xbox 360.

What date was this posted?

By mechwarrior1989 on 4/2/2006 3:09:51 AM , Rating: 2
Aren't they USB ports anyways? Why not just use a laptop cooler, you could potentially buy it for less and use it for your laptop as well.

Of course it isn't directly blowing air into or pulling air out of it, but it's gotta cool it still right? I mean they cool laptops...

Still havn't seen it

I know 9 people with 360's two got theres launce date and 4 of them got the second batch. None of them have problems one of them even fished electric thermometer sensors in to his to see how hot it was and it was runing at about 45 degrees celcius my pc runs at about 39-43 celcius. I am not trying to say that the 360 has not got overheating problems but they seem far less prevolent then people make out.

360 coolers have been around for a while, there is another whose name escapes me.

As for the overheating, you'll notice as you wonder around the web the same people posting on several message boards the same things about there problems, I think it is impossible to get any idea of the percentage of Xbox users with the problem.

My 3 month old 360 is running in a cabinent with a PC in it as well, still works fine.

I have had a 360 since the begining of January and the only problem I had was with an actual game bug (Perfect Dark Zero when Joe slides down the cable in the 3rd mission), and that only locked the system once. Pull the power and plug it back in and I was right back to playing games (I played the level 20-30 times, everytime useing the cable, so it is a rare bug).

As for sound, it does have fans, but it is bearly noticable. Especialy if you are use to a tower. I would say it is as loud as my friends first gen PS2.

The only reason I would buy the fan attachment is if I was going to start overclocking the system, and then I would also need a new powersupply.
