The battle between Blu-ray Disc and HD-DVD continues to get more
aggressive. The failure of HD-DVD and Blu-ray forums to reach a
unified standard will assure consumers of a viciously fought battle
between the two next-generation formats. DailyTech recently published an article
stating the adult film company Digital Playground announced that it
will release new products on the next generation Blu-ray Disc format
exclusively. Although this is good news for the Blu-ray camp, we wanted to
know if other adult content providers were also siding with one
particular format.
It could be very easily argued that Vivid Entertainment Group is the biggest and most recognized name in adult entertainment -- the Wall Street Journal calls Vivid "the biggest name in pornography". Steven Hirsch, the man who founded Vivid in 1984, was kind enough to answer a few of our questions about next-generation technology like Blu-ray Disc and HD-DVD. When asked about which format the media giant would endorse, Hirsch responded "Vivid is not in the business of choosing one format over the other. We are content producers and will distribute our movies on whatever formats are available. We will produce and let the consumer decide which format they like best."
Digital Rights Management (DRM) is another serious issue that many consumers are anxiously waiting to see how each new format handles. "As with Hollywood movies it is very important to protect our movies. We believe that both formats will offer an acceptable DRM solution. If they do not they will certainly have difficulty getting product," Hirsch said.
If you're skeptical about whether or not Vivid using both formats will have an affect on the competition between Blu-ray and HD-DVD, keep in mind that the adult entertainment industry is widely credited with the success of VHS over Betamax; the last time we had a severe format war. Sony may have learned from its mistakes in the past, however. UMD (Universal Media Disc), Sony's new digital format for the PlayStation Portable, had adult content providers lined up almost before the devices were even ready.
"If they're going to pirate somebody, we want it to be us rather than somebody else." -- Microsoft Business Group President Jeff Raikes
