Wii will stay on top, says Activision

Earlier this week, EA told the media and investors its belief that the Wii would stay on top and that PlayStation 3 would outstrip the Xbox 360 in western market sales throughout 2008.

Although Activision didn’t dispute its competitor’s prediction on the ongoing sales of the Wii, it did put the Xbox 360 ahead of the PlayStation 3 for the year in North America.

Activision revealed during to Q3 earning call that it expects the Wii to sell more than 6 million units, the Xbox 360 to sell 4 to 5 million units, the PS3 somewhere between 3-4 million and the PS2 trailing off at 2 to 3 million.

The games publisher also was pleased to announce record holiday sales, up 80 percent over the previous year with $1.48 billion in sales and $272.2 in profit. Big titles helping to drive Activision’s positive report are Guitar Hero III and Call of Duty 4.

Slated for 2008 will be more games that Activision hopes will bring it another record period. According to Variety, Guitar Hero 4 will hit in the fall, but not before two other spinoffs in spring. The publisher also has the rights to release an adaptation of the upcoming James Bond movie, Quantum of Solace.

With Activision the top publisher in the U.S. in 2007, the company’s next target is to unseat EA in Europe. "That's the low-hanging fruit for us," Activision CEO Bobby Kotick said. "We have No. 1 market share in the U.S. but not Europe, and there's no reason we see why ‘Guitar Hero' shouldn't be the No. 1 product in Europe as well."

Yeah that sums it up for a lot of us. I don't have any problem with any of the consoles (we all know most people are fanboys of something or other), but most everyone I know has the 360.
It's just more fun with friends ?

Okay, imagine it's the beginning of 2007 and the PS3 is a year away and one of your friends commits and buys a 360. It's just dominoes from there. In order for you to play online games with him, now his friends are much more inclined to choose the 360. This is why Microsoft was so adamant about sacrificing billions to get out just a year in advance.

Most everybody I know has a PC.
Sure, some also have an XBox/360, some have PS2/3, others have Nintendo, but most people I know and most posting here have a PC!
I can play COD4, BF2 and other games as such FREE online with my PC. I don't play any games that are going to cost me monthly to play it, like WOW, and the same goes for XBOX live (fees).

I'm with you - add Xfire and you even have a system to track stats, chat with friends, follow them into servers, and many of the other "community" features that consoles now boast. Consoles just make it easier.

COD4 definitely looks and plays infinitely better on PC. Contrary to a previous post I have to say I'm enjoying it now!

I concur, I have an xbox, xbox 360, and Wii. I only play on the 360. It is stunning on my 52” 1080p LCD TV. I am a software developer, and I don’t know anyone at my office who has a PS3 and only 1 other person with a Wii. However, I know of at least a dozen others at work with xbox 360s. I have watched an xbox 360 and a PS3 side by side at BestBuy and the PS3 had nothing visually on the 360. In fact, the PS3 was very unimpressive.

I have tried the Wii, but I feel like I am playing sesame street games. I guess some people feel that swinging a Wii remote around what makes a game immersive. However, I find games like Oblivion, Gears of War, and Halo 3 are far more immersive to me. Playing games on the Wii that have you killing phony pixilated NPCs or playing various sports against what looks like Jimmy Nutron and his neighbors just does not cut it for me. Not after standing against a Berserker in Gears, the flood in Halo 3, and seeing the fantastic beauty and complexity of the indoor and outdoor environments in Oblivion.
A Wii cannot compare in this field with its standard definition display capabilities and pixilated graphics.

You can play high definition games on a PS3, but why bother when they don’t look any better or maybe even worse. If you have waited this long to buy a console, you might as well buy a 360. They are in stock (unlike the Wii), competitively priced (unlike the PS3) and there is a massive game library to choose from (unlike either the Wii or PS3).

The only way the PS3 could outsell the 360 is if every prospective console buyer lost all common sense. Of course there are those out there who just buy what they are told is cool like all those owning Apple products. Maybe Sony should hire Apple to market their products.

If you like the environments in Oblivion you should play the Witcher. It's not as free-roaming, but the world is still more immersing and beautiful. It's the best RPG I've personally played since FF3 on the SNES.

Agreed. Great game (so far). I'm about half way through, it looks fantastic, especially with everything cranked up!

And also to respond on topic, I noticed alot of people saying that most of the people they know own 360s. I on the other hand have noticed completely the opposite in my circle. Other than myself, no one has bought a 360 in the last year, only PS3s, I think about 5 or 6 of them now.

Seems mostly related to the 360s reliability issues (i've been through 3)

Im a PC guy though so I could really care less. The biggest problem with the 360 is the fualty units.

If it would have released with a Harddrive on all system, And if they could have prevented all these RROD problems. Then I'd say the PS3 wouldnt even come close. But as it stands MS made Sony's job a whole lot easier.

actually its not 1080p or even 720p native, its run at an awkward 1136x640 so that they could have two buffers for high and low dynamic range.

the 360 elite(other systems as well?) upscales it to 1080p.

Only a handful of games have been advertised as outputting true 1080p rather than being upscaled by the 360's hardware scaler. Some basketball game and I believe Sega's last Tennis game are two that I recall. Some others that follow it more might know a couple more titles.

no games are 1080p on the 360, the max is 1280x720 and the elites upscale.

to be fair, few games are 1080p on the PS3 either, most are 720p. but at least there are some and likely will be more in the future as coders get a clue about how to program for it.

You can play high definition games on a PS3, but why bother when they don’t look any better or maybe even worse.

Probably because it has many additional and desirable attributes not available on the 360:

-its netplay is free while the 360's is fee-based
-it's much quieter while gaming because games use the slower-spinning/higher-density blu-ray drive
-its well built and has a much lower risk of failure
-it has high definition movie playback at no additional purchase
-it's capable of linux and folding@home for emulation and basic PC tasks
-it has wi-fi connectivity
-it will take any 2.5" hard drive upgrade while MS forces you to buy their own
-mouse/keyboard support is available for many FPS games while MS refused to cannibalize their PC platform

The only way the PS3 could outsell the 360 is if every prospective console buyer lost all common sense. Of course there are those out there who just buy what they are told is cool like all those owning Apple products. Maybe Sony should hire Apple to market their products.

Or people just see the PS3 as a more complete product and don't want to get nickle-dimed to death. Trust me, the PS3 has always been the more desirable product, it's simply that many people couldn't wait or weren't willing to pay for the initially ridiculous price. Considering this years game lineup and the PS3's inevitable cut to $300, most analysts are predicting the PS3 to outsell the 360 from here on out. I'm not sure what Activision is smoking.

Yes, I'd agree with that. I went with the Wii because it was cheap and the games were different but if I had to choose between the PS3 and 360 then I'd go with the PS3. The reason for this is simply that the 360 hardware and overall quality is, frankly, rubbish and I have no intention of buying something with such a high probability of failure. As I've noted before in other articles, it was quite clear that Microsoft simply wanted to get a product out before the PS3 arrived in order to capture a significant portion of the market early. Congratulations to them - they succeeded in achieving the goal and I honestly wouldn't be surprised if they "won" this round. But I will never buy a 360 because they sacrificed quality for speed and while the PS3 is still damned expensive, at least it feels like a luxury product for the money.

You make a good point, the 360 only has a lead since Sony messed up on pricing. MS needs to reminded of this because they seem to think they are doing well because they made a better console. They do have a MUCH better online implementation but that's all. Otherwise they are the lesser of two evils, and if they don't give up their nickel and diming, they will be put back in their place very quickly. They have a chance to utterly and completely dominate if only they can pull their heads out of their collective asses.

I'm not sure what Activision is smoking.

Thanks for the good laugh and thanks for pointing out all the obvious facts about the PS3 that the 360 fanboys don't seem to realize! In the long run the PS3 is by far the better console and I have read the game developers are just starting to know how and tap into the potential for making games for PS3 for a awesome exp. Grand Turismo 5 is the most realistic game I have ever seen, I haven't seen anything close to that on the 360.

Considering this years game lineup and the PS3's inevitable cut to $300

Do you know if the PS3 will really drop to $300? Because my son and I are probably going to purchase the PS3 sometime this year and I sure would love to save $100.

I guarantee it will drop to $200... eventually . I think $300 anytime this year is a bit unlikely, they've been taking a major bath on the hardware from day one. At an estimated cost to manufacture of $400 (for $400 model), they're still taking at least a quick shower. However, I'd be surprised if they didn't knock of $50 by Christmas.

BUT HALO 3 looks great though and some more games. The time is now to get a PS3 because MGS4 is coming 6/08,KILLZONE 2 -9/08,FF new coming DEC 08,and RESISTANCE 2-11/08.Till then go to gamestop or to find a game u like because most of the mult. platform games out now that are next-gen are available. The price for a PS3 IS COMPETIVELY priced! Because if you have a computer at home and someone is using it,you can use your ps3 and check your emails or visit other websites using the built in web browser,it has 2 times more memory than the 360hardrive, PS3 has a blu-ray-ENOUGH SAID!

I have one friend with a PS3, but he's kind of a doofus. When I finally made it over to his place to check out his new toy, I couldn't get over how crappy the graphics looked on his older HD rear projection set. After a brief investigation (the first time I had ever played with a PS3's menus) I discovered that the console was set to output 480i, and was being stretched by the TV to fill the 16:9 screen. Of course the graphics improved considerably when I upped the resolution to 720p...

This has been the sum total of my experience with PS# owners. :)

Or friends with enough money, only joking.

Out of my friends only 1 has a 360, I have a PS3, most don't have either, so maybe my friends are really poor???

People tend to follow the herd. If their friends buy something they are more likely too.

I bought a PS3, my other friend who's into gaming bought a 360.

Personally I prefer playing on his 360. The controller's better, the Live system works better and the achievements add an extra something to the games that the PS3 doesn't have.

If I didn't have to pay for live I mite consider getting a 360, but that constant dipping into my wallet is just too annoying. A console is a one off purchase for me, then games and extra controllers as required.

PS3 is a handy BD player tho, I know one friend who's bought a PS3 for this, but I won't include it in the gaming count.

MS's decision to rush out a half baked console has paid off, well done whoever made that decision.

If I get a PS3 I'm going to require PS2 BC, which mean's probalby I'll get a 60 or 80GB version.

I don't know if PS3 is going to outsell XBOX this year but I do expect Sony to gain some market share. With HD-DVD all but dead, owning a Blu-ray player doesn't seem like such a bad idea. Add in some AAA exclusives (GT5, MGS4, etc.), free online play, a new DualShock controller and all of sudden the PS3 looks a lot more attractive than before.

Disclaimer: I don't own either system.

I still don't get why free online is a selling point? It costs 5 bucks a month for live, and its totally worth it. If it was over $100 a year then I could see a problem with it. I've used both online systems for COD4 and Live was better. Mostly because there were so many more games going, but it still made it better and the connection had no hiccups at all. I did have a few hiccups on the ps3.

$5 a month is $120 over two years, which is the cost of 2-4 additional games. It isn't that netplay isn't worth paying for, it's simply that netplay+DMC4+MGS4 is a better deal than just netplay.

RE: Toss Up?

Well I own all three consoles, and I have never played online on the 360 (despite the months free trial I got) It just doesn't interest me as much as playing in the same room as another person. That said, I would probably resent the $5 per month (Yet another subscription!) because it does mount up over time. If you use it fair enough but I doubt I would. I play Tekken DR online a bit though on the PS3 which is good fun and not nearly as laggy and god-awful as it could have been. Overall, the PS3 feels better made and seems to have more features than the 360, which despite the light usage I always have a nagging fear is going to blow up at some point. The Blu Ray player alone justifies it for me, and DMC4 is so good! WTF is up with the installation time though?! 30 mins wait just to play the game...When you get these in the end it is worth it, it has to be said though.

I think the 360 is probably on a downwards sales arc now, most of its big games are out, while the PS3 still has a ways to grow, especially when it gets cheap enough that the rest of you can afford it. If the two boxes were the same price, who here would honestly choose a 360 over the PS3?

RE: Ugh
By Domicinator on 2/9/2008 10:46:16 AM , Rating: 2
The key to what you just said there is "$4000 setup". That's becoming less and less feasible for PC gamers to spend and it's BECAUSE of consoles. Consoles are now basically PCs. They have USB ports, hard drives, online capabilities, etc. No, we're not at the point yet where you can use them for work, so they're not quite there yet, but they're getting close, and the next gen will get even closer.

My point is this: Most PC games that come out these days are multi platform releases. The two big exceptions I can think of from 2007 are Crysis and The Witcher. You hardly needed to upgrade your machine to play the Witcher, but you definitely needed to spend some money to play Crysis. Everything else that came out was stuff that was EXACTLY THE SAME GAME ON THE CONSOLES!!! The only difference is that you seem to have to keep upgrading your PC to play the latest console titles. What sense does that make? Have you seen the hardware requirements for Assassin's Creed on the PC? That's ridiculous. Whether it's because of inefficient coding or not, it is what it is. That's the way things are going. PCs are becoming nothing more than really expensive consoles, and consoles are becoming low functioning PCs.

For these reasons, I'm slowly migrating to the 360 for my gaming. I have been a hardcore PC gamer for about 20 years, but even I see the writing on the wall.

Europe favours the Playstation 3 in comparison to the xbox360 at least the trend is that way... Guess who leads that share as a publisher. EA?

Xbox 360 leads the playstation 3 in sales in the US but the trend is that the lead is narrowing but whose the market leader in software. Activision.

You can always shape things the way you want to shape them. Depending how you look at it.

So i went to vgchartz since people on DT seem to love that site, and i put together a little chart from the end of october to its latest figures. I see one trend on there, the continued dominance of the 360 in the US.®1...

I see almost 2 million ps3's sold since late october, and i see over 2.5 million 360's sold in that same time period. I understand people thinking the sales will pick up with the games the ps3 has coming out, but i think you jumped the gun on ps3's growth in the US by a few months.

If you had bothered to read that i wrote about the U.S.A and not the rest of the world, you could've saved youself some time ranting about imaginary STATS to back up your claims. I posted about how everyone claims the ps3 is outpacing the 360 in the US now, and its not true. They are barely keeping up even with the price cut and with blu-ray getting a bump from warner. Its common knowledge that Japan won't give the 360 a chance, it happened last generation also. The only place the 360 can grow is in Europe and Australia and possibly South America, problem is the playstation brand is very strong there and people were willing to wait and pay a huge amount of cash for the ps3.

Both companies will be striving to make their predictions self fullfiling also. Activision clearly prefers the 360. I have friends that do game testing for activision and everyone there begs not to be put on the ps3 games since the 360 ones are always more polished. Working on the ps3 ones is twice the work. Not flaming, its the truth. On the other hand, EA has always had a great relationship with the PS brand, and they have already stated they will from now on make games for the ps3 then port them to the 360, which seems to work better for them. As long as these companies continue to make great games, who cares imo.

P.S. If only we could get the NFL to get rid of that stupid exclusive deal they have with EA, then maybe we could get a madden game worth playing. To me the NFL2K games are and will always be better than anything EA puts out there, but having exclusivity i doubt EA will refrain from just rehashing the same lame madden year after year.

Dont they lose that this year. I thought thats why they were talking about dropping the prices on the Madden games.

So they just nearly made it ;)

Hahahaha!!! I didn't notice that type-o when I read the article. I think that it should read 272.2 Million dollars, but it's not worth changing the text to sacrifice the joke!

"If they're going to pirate somebody, we want it to be us rather than somebody else." -- Microsoft Business Group President Jeff Raikes

So I guess Microsoft and all the software developer (on the X360 side) is really satisfied with the X360 being able to be flashed to play burned DVD copies of their games.
At least I know the people using the console is happy, and that's one argument on why they're not letting it down "the game library is bigger on the X360!!"... yeah, it sure is, but it wouldn't matter if you couldn't download the games, since then you wouldn't have the money to buy the games either way. Sad, but true.
The PS3 platform is, as of today, fully secure and can't play downloaded and burned PS3 games. I fail to see how software developers don't take this fact into account when they're developing multi-platform games. In my eyes they should focus more on the PS3 instead of the X360, since that way they'll earn more cash in the end.

When/If the PS3 gains the "ability" to play burned PS3 games, I bet we'll see the sales rate in the US raising "quite a bit"... and then you wouldn't say "The PS3 don't got enough games", since your wallets actually just can't give you the money to afford get games the legal way.

Piracy is what keeps X360 alive, and in front of the X360 so far. That's what I think. Going PS3 like me and supporting the software developers fully would allow all of us to enjoy amazing 1080p games titles sooner.

So, US, give it a shot, go PS3 ;-)!

First off: Sorry for my grammatic, but English ain't my primary language.

That's what I was supposed to write.

And as a side note: I'm a bit rough in my statement. I know the X360 has some potential, but I have more faith in the PS3 for a couple of reasons - the open environment, the quality, all the options/alternatives, the games etc..

So your comment related to you being a pirate? Since you seem to know a lot about the subject

No, what I said was that the X360 platform and Microsoft - due to the fact that they wasn't able to build a more secure machine, like Sony's PS3 - is provoking the users to support piracy.

Since the US is the homeland for the X360 it's also where it sells the best and that's why I said "So, US, give it a shot, go PS3 ;-)!". If more people had PS3 I bet the software developers would be more satisfied, since more games would have been sold, instead of downloaded.

Has the PS3 ever Outsold the 360?
By ZimZum on 2/8/2008 8:17:52 PM , Rating: 2
In all of these discussions, the Mantra of "The PS3 has sold more than the 360 did at the same point in its lifespan" is often repeated. Thats all well and good. But since they have both been in the marketplace with decent availability has the PS3 ever outsold the 360 for an appreciable amount of time? Also the Wii and to a lesser extent the 360 have both had problems keeping stock on the shelves. The PS3 hasn't really had this issue.

The PS3 outsold the 360 worldwide last year through the holiday season. These two companies have commented on just the NA sales.

By crystal clear on 2/9/2008 1:48:17 PM , Rating: 2
Activision revealed during to Q3 earning call that it expects the Wii to sell more than 6 million units, the Xbox 360 to sell 4 to 5 million units, the PS3 somewhere between 3-4 million and the PS2 trailing off at 2 to 3 million.

Year after after your observe PS2 still a big seller,a previous generation console competing with the current generation consoles.
The above inspires the the question "why" that sends you to the buyers/consumers to get your answers.

You observe all the efforts/money/time invested in promoting the new generation console players, did not convince those millions of PS2 buyers over the years, thats its time or worth moving over to the new generation consoles.

You observe newer/better technology does not automatically guarrantee you the success, the quick adoption, the response you would like to see.

Sony focused exclusively on technology whilst designing the PS3, from the cell to B.R. to graphics etc.

They initially gave users/buyers the backward compatibility,
then took it back, then they cut the prices, then they played around with GBs from 20 to 40 to 60 to 80 discontinuing the 20 & 60 the storage options.then came the colours & styling & more .

Nothing seems to work playing around with the above options, the PS2 keeps on selling with NO promotions year after year-its just sells itself.

This brings us to the Activision & E.A. both seem to ignore the facts/realities of the N.American markets.

The economic slowdown in the USA which is rapidly moving into recession by 2H08 is not the right climate for high consumer spendings or high sales projections.

Consumer spending is expected to fall drastically as basic needs taking priority.
Unemployment figures are expected to rise drastically, plus other factors like high energy cost.

All put together its bad times on the way.

Their projection for 2008 are not realistic at all,let it be consoles or games-they can expect some dirty surprises.

As for the consumers nobody seems to ask them the question
"WHY" or "what do you want".

According to the article, Activision is only predicting the 360 to outsell the PS3 in the U.S. It makes no worldwide claims. EA said it expects PS3 to outsell 360, worldwide, and that it could tie 360 in the U.S.

Here's the DT article on EA's prediction:

Also, what's with all the PS3 trolling getting rated-up, in here? People saying, "Anyone with a PS3 either has no friends or no common sense," are either rated-up or not rated at all. While there are some reasons to own a 360 over a PS3, there are also reasons for the opposite: Blu-ray movies, exclusive games, free online, and some people already have a gaming PC, thus minimizing the 360-exclusive games. Don't misunderstand me. I'm not arguing that PS3 is better than the 360 for everyone, but it certainly isn't as cut-and-dry as being a "common sense" decision.

Activision is just as bad as MS

Customer service from MS is $60/hour for OEM. Customer service from Activision is $30/hour for a $40 game. I really, really hope that Activision dies a long, horrible death. Unfortunately, I discovered this only after I bought Call of Duty 4. I'm an Anglophone in S. Korea. A lot of games allow you to install in a selection of different languages. Not Activision games though. So that's $50 permanently down the tubes. From now on, it's piracy for me!

360 outsells PS3
By wolfpack1825 on 2/11/2008 1:56:31 PM , Rating: 1
I see the few sony fan boys are here. I have no desire whatsoever to purchase anything from Sony. Reason: I don't enjoy any Japanese games, the story's are weak or translated very badly. Have no desire JRPG's, and everything else I can get on my XBOX360. If it comes out of Japan I don't want it. My opinion

I like xbox live because it's a watchdog against idiots. The reason multiplayer is fun again, because I have choices. (So I would pay for that) I left the pc world because of rampant cheating. I play my 360 because it is just pure fun. I don't care about HD or Blue ray, because the future is streaming movies.

The Sony un monitored world brings me right back to why I don't play games on my pc. So your freedom gives you cheaters, modders and idiot's. So no I would never want to go to the darkside, accept to maybe turn my PS3 into a linux machine and that's about it.

Sony is a monoply just as bad as Microsoft, and in most cases much much much worse. I support America where most of you fan boys live!!!. You wonder why everything good leaves Amercia because you fan boys can't appreciate much.

The XBOX360 will outsell the PS3 because it is just better. So Activision is right, and EA is just trying to create sales that they have lost because there games are so very bad. Creativty from EA is dead, so move on to better game publishers.
