AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson  (Source:
Google responded to AT&T, saying that it doesn't have any agreements with AT&T that require a deal before the the launch of a handset

AT&T had a few choice words about Google concerning Android update delays at the Milken Institute's Global Conference 2012.

AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson addressed Android's slow pace when it comes to introducing updates for the mobile operating system. He ultimately blamed Google for the delays.

"It's an issue," said Stephenson. "Google kind of determines what platform gets the newest releases and when. Often times that's a negotiated arrangement, and so that's something we work at hard. We know that it's important to our customers."

Google responded to AT&T, saying that it doesn't have any agreements with AT&T that require a deal before the the launch of a handset. Rather, the latest release of Android becomes available at when the first device that carries it launches.

Google executives also mentioned that the delays are caused by operator approvals, basically meaning that carriers are to blame.

Earlier this week, Stephenson also picked on Apple's iPhone, which he said he loses sleep over because of early AT&T pricing models and new messaging services like iMessage.

In other AT&T-related news, the carrier will be testing small cells later this year and early next year in an effort to up its network coverage. It was announced earlier this year that Cisco would work on the cells with AT&T, which are expected to launch at a fraction of the cost of a traditional tower. The cells can also be deployed in many different and convenient environments.

It is currently unclear whether the type of hardware being tested is 3G, 4G, etc.

Update Coming When GSIV Gets Released?
By sigmatau on 5/10/2012 12:08:37 PM , Rating: 3
I'm not holding my breath anymore. I don't expect to get ICS on my GS2 that was the flagship Android phone just one month prior to ICS being relesed.

This is beyond BS.

Anyone want to buy a GS2?

In fairness this only applies to the US we have had ICS on our galaxy S2's in Japan for almost two months now.

Don't know why the US galaxy S2's use different hardware seems quite stupid but most of the other countries have ICS updates already including poorer countries like south africa {I've got lots of family there}. Just because one tiny portion of the market doesn't have updates {The US] it doesn't mean the rest of us don't.

My guess is because all the U.S. carriers insist on a high degree of customization which gives them more control over the handset. If they used vanilla Android, there'd be a few weeks delay as the handset manufacturer updates the drivers.

If the handset manufacturer adds its own flourishes to Android (e.g. Touchwiz), then that adds probably 3-6 months of adaptation and testing. And if the carrier insists on other changes on top of that (like that CarrierIQ stuff), that adds probably another 3-6 months.

The folks at CyanogenMod got ICS versions for most older phones out within a couple weeks of ICS source code going public. This despite having to hack their own drivers. Obviously it's not tested as thoroughly because it's being done by volunteers and because of the smaller number of "customers". But that's the kind of turnaround you could expect if the manufacturers and carriers didn't insist on customizing Android so much. It's rather silly to blame Google for the delay when a bunch of hackers taking Google's code have been way more productive than the carriers and manufacturers.

I agree completely with what you saying I just find it weird that the US carriers wouldn't take the stock galaxy S2, ecspecially considering the galaxy S2 only got to the states about 6 months after the rest of the world.

I was running CM9 on my galaxy S2 but I got the lock screen bug so I switched back to MIUI {2.3.7}, to be honest I am still perfectly happy on gingerbread and don't really see the need to upgrade to ICS yet.

The real problem is the circle jerk, the carriers blame the manufactures, the manufactures blame the carriers and then some carriers {AT&T} blame google it's quite absurd.

Hopefully google's takeover of motorola will usher in a new age of speedy and effortless android updates, having moved to android from an iphone I can't say it's as big a problem as certain apple fans make it out to be but it is one of my biggest gripes with the platform, however that said I also hope that if manufacturers get serious we don't see fan projects like CyanogenMod, MIUI and such dissapear because I love being able to flash different Roms to my phone, the first time I flashed MIUI to my phone it was almost like getting a brand new phone to play with.

Exactly. Verizon won't update any phones until they can make sure that all their bloatware, TONS of bloat, can work after the update and that people are unable to uninstall them. I mostly blame Verizon for my phone not having an update yet.

LOL... OK, you pick one phone out of dozens that isn't out yet in the USA (its out in some regions) and you think you have a point. Really man, your tiring me with your mental issues. You are so far lost in this debate that your just grasping at anything you can to look less idiotic and failing at it.

I really don't care if RIM updates current phones or not. Honeslty I think anyone that bought a BB OS7 phone (update or not) is either forced to because of work, or totally uninformed. Either way its their loss not mine.

When BBOS10 comes out, either with RIM, or whatever company buys RIM I will give it a fair look, I may even buy it if it's pieces all fit.

Lolz, You are hilarious in many ways.... not. :-P

SG2 has been updated in many regions except the US where it is the Carriers fault.

(cr)Apple on the other hand denies many things if you are not located in the ahem.. U.S. of A.
But since you wear those rosie colour glasses... I will let you adore your (cr)Apple products.
No need to go in to details, since where everyone sees a volcano erupting and lava flowing, you just see medows of golden flowers and when the lava reaches 10 feet from you, you won't need to worry since you will already be crisp as a bacon. lolz.

So what is your point?

Now, on to more important news. The U.S. of A., is not the ONLY market in the world, it is "A" market in the world.

Now, as to (cr)Apple products - of recent - aka after 1997 - before that I adored them, and I always have liked Wozniak, but never the scumbag S.Jobs - I did get inclined to buy an iPhone once here is Aus. Guess what, I was NOT ALLOWED to grandfather my plan and get the phone. Why? because (cr)Apple deemed neccesery to tell the Telco's to use exclusive contracts with their phones! So I can choose ANY phone I like except your so beloved (cr)Apple on my plan. Also it is not restricted to my carrier, all carriers have the same directive - exclusive (cr)Apple plan or BYO.
And NO, I do NOT want to buy it outright, when I am entiteld to a totally "free" handset on my post paid plan every 12 or 24 months - actually a little earlier even.
So move along, nothing here to see... take your dictatorship with you. I have no plans on being dictated what I am or not allowed to get.

Btw, I have gone through MANY BRANDS OF PHONE, Ericsson, Sony-Ericsson, Nokia, LG, I-Mate K-Jam,BB, Palm Centro, Samsung i900, including both SG's and now got the Moto Razr. So I would not call my self biased to a brand or eco-system, but you Sir, can only see a fruit and everything else does not matter. I liked that fruit when it was multi-color, but after S.J. came back, I loathed it with all his lies, arrogance and ego-maniac and... anyway let him swivel and turn where he is and leave it at that.

What a whiner. He wanted to be first with the iPhone and he got it. He contracted with Microsoft to be the first to carry theirs. Now he's whining because he wants to get first position for Android updates. Somebody spank his ass. No... on second thought, he may like it.

Blatant Liar.

Is this guy deluded or what? Or does he really expect people to believe the shit he comes out with?

I have seen first hand how different carriers push out the updates for the same phone at different times. Probably because they want to stuff their shovel wear on top of the other shit that the likes of HTC and Samsung plough on top of Android.

RE: Blatant Liar.
By amanojaku on 5/10/2012 10:06:15 AM , Rating: 3
Of course people believe it. How else do you explain:

1) selling $300 smartphones for $600?
2) dictating the terms under which said device can be used by its "owner"? (little or no customization, irremovable apps, apps that cannot be installed outside of a "store", no unlocking, etc...)
3) forcing smartphone owners to purchase potentially unnecessary data plans?
4) promising unlimited data that's actually capped?

Thanks to this, I still have a feature phone; smartphones aren't worth it to me. I'm not familiar with cell phones in other countries, but the rest of the US has bought into the carriers' smartphone BS. That includes Android users: try putting a stock Android installation on your phone, then ask for support from the carrier. The answer is "no".

It's not Google's fault or the carriers' fault. It's the fault of consumers willing to take it up the @$$.

Why are you surprised?

ATT made EXACTLY the same lie about SIM-unlocking iPhones after two years on contract. They claimed that
(a) Apple forced them to SIM-lock the phones in the first place
(b) Apple forced them to utilize the clumsy and slow process they adopted for unlocking

It goes without saying, but let me point out that both of these statements are nonsense.

This is a company (run by a CEO) which is absolutely determined never to take responsibility for anything stupid that it does.

Between Google, the manufacturers and the carriers I feel that all 3 should share the blame. I love nearly every aspect of Android, the choices are limitless but when it comes to updates that's its Achilles heel. Given the current rate we are happy if our device gets a single update before it reaches the carriers end of line list. The fact that I can have a seamless, defined experience on any iOS device is its one major draw for me. Google needs to find a way to reign in the carriers and manufactures because the current process is detrimental to the end user experience.

I'm with you all

Everyone who gives two craps about android knows its an open book and if you want an update all you have to do is compile it. If that dude wasn't such a douche all android phones on his service would be unlocked (running CM7 or CM9) and he wouldn't have to worry about questions like this :)
