AT&T has opened up FaceTime over Cellular availability to those with grandfathered unlimited plans as well as those with the iPhone 4S

AT&T must have finally realized it was the only carrier restricting FaceTime over Cellular to certain customers. It has finally opened up the function to all types of plans.

Back in August, AT&T announced that it was limiting FaceTime availability to customers with Mobile Share data plans (for free). This meant that users with regular 2GB/4GB data plans or grandfathered unlimited plans were left out. They didn't even have the option to pay for it.

FaceTime has always been available to iPhone 4/4S customers over a Wi-Fi network, but Apple offered the ability to use FaceTime over a cellular connection once iOS 6 beta released.

AT&T's decision to limit FaceTime to certain users caught a lot of criticism from users, and even landed it a FCC net neutrality complaint.

Earlier this month, AT&T
said it would enable FaceTime over Cellular for iOS 6 users on any tiered data plan -- for free. The user must have an LTE device, though. Users with grandfathered unlimited plans were still left out of the loop. AT&T customers with Mobile Share data plans would still be able to use FaceTime for free, as would those with Wi-Fi connections.

However, it seems AT&T has opened up FaceTime over Cellular availability to those with grandfathered unlimited plans as well as those with the iPhone 4S. This means it would now be available fo free to iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPad 3rd generation and higher users.

Those in the MacRumors forum found that they could activate FaceTime over Cellular on their iPhone 4S' or iPhone 5s by turning their phones off and on again. However, some still couldn't, which likely means the service is making its way around to certain areas for now.

Earlier this month, AT&T said it would take about eight to 10 weeks to roll the service out to tiered data plans.
