$279 for a Radeon X1800? No objections here!

We just received news that internal roadmaps from ATI have revealed more information about R590.  R590 will launch at the beginning of March for $279 (depending on vendor).  The R590 ASIC is effectively the Radeon X1900 core, but at a lower clock speed with some disabled features -- the roadmap did not state exactly what has been disabled. Expect to see the card retail as the Radeon X1800 GTO. The roadmap revealed that these cards will come with 256MB of memory.

Radeon X1800, the R520 ASIC, was a large disappointment for opponents and proponents of ATI alike. R580 was a much better GPU but, like NVIDIA's similar offerings, is very expensive.  The $250-300 price point has always been one of the most neglected price points for the GPU market.

A year ago, ATI used a very similar tactic by labeling R480 and R423 ASIC as Radeon X800 GTO video cards.  Several clever users were able to use BIOS hacks to unlock the disabled pipelines on these cards.  This may not be possible with the X1800 GTO as it uses a dedicated R590 ASIC spun specifically for these card models.

The same source also indicated that 80nm R600 would be available this October.  Details beyond that are still light.

Cool for the people in that price range...

This is pretty good news for people looking to buy a card in that price range, as I'm sure many people here are, and it could be interesting if it will be possible to mod these cards to be even faster.

Regardless, I'm nowhere near that price range, so this card has no direct relevance to me whatsoever. ;)

Did you bother to even glance at the article?

12 pipelines, 36 pixel shader units?
I wonder...

most neglected

i think $180-$220 is the most neglected. i want better than my 6600GT, but not SLIGHTLY better, ie, 6800GS. c'mon 7600GS/GT! T_T

If you can get some good deals, you can grab a X850 XT's around the price range (my friend got one from Microcenter a few weeks back) for $200. Sure, no SM 3.0 but still plenty fast.

X850XT is worth $200 for now... no performance in HDR and no SH 3.0 though...

There is no X1800 pro

And how as R520 a disappointmen? It was faster than 7800 GTX. I guess it was late but that does not deal with "disappointing".

Right now ATI has the threre fastest cards available (no 512 GTX does not count as available) and X1800XT is 399 at newegg, $20 cheaper than 256 GTX, with 256MB more memory besides.

The x1800 can't beat GTX512 (at least not repeatedly). In some cases it won over the GTX256, but all it really did was give some competition to show the ATI still existed. The 1900 OTOH...:)

I don’t think that GTX512 is a card...it's an nvidia overclocked part much like Ati XT PE is, it is just there to win some benchmarks (to have their brand name on the top of the charts), is not for sell!

Like the previous post said and I totally agree, Ati cards X800, X1800, .... have the double of the memory of nvidia cards at similar pricies.

All my friends are doing a very BIG MISTAKE that is buying 6600GT cards with ONLY 128MB of RAM.
Even if its worst (lower performance/features SM3) I would go for the Ati X800 with 256MB. I can buy one X850 almost at the same price of 6600GT/6800 and get the double of the RAM.

wait...

wait so is it based on the X1800 (R520) or X1900 (R580) core? In the article it says it is a cut-down version of the X1900 core but will retail as the X1800 GTO. I'm confused.

You read it right, the R590 is a gimped version of the 580.

$250-300 point isn't neglected

"The $250-300 price point has always been one of the most neglected price points for the GPU market."

I don't think so. The 7800GT is right at that point, it wasn't at launch, but has been for weeks now.

What can I get under $200??

In all my years of buying video cards (ever since a used ATI Graphics Vantage) I don't think I've ever bought one outside the $99 to $150 price range, and I hope I never need to.

Waiting for Benches

Hopefully this card will deliver some decent performance for the $. Been waiting to get a new card to upgrade my system and throw my X800XL into a HTPC for some light gaming, but the older X850's didn't have SM3.0 and I'm less than impressed with how 6800's and 7800 GT's scale at higher AA/AF for the higher resolutions.

Another process change with the R600? ATI hasn't been doing too well on die shrinks on enthusiast-level parts... hopefully we see that card before the end of the year, though.
