New Catalyst 6.7 for Windows and Linux

DailyTech previously reported Spanish tech site MadBoxPC had posted a leaked WHQL certified version of ATI’s Catalyst 6.7. ATI has officially released the Catalyst 6.7 driver package yesterday, WHQL certification and all. The new Catalyst 6.7 drivers introduce enhanced CrossFire support which allows users to manually force alternate frame rendering modes in Direct3D applications. This should theoretically improve performance in Direct3D applications that lack proper CrossFire profiles. However, ATI warns forcing alternate frame rendering will not work with applications with known compatibility issues.

A plethora of issues were resolved with Catalyst 6.7 too, including a couple issues with Elder Scrolls: Oblivion and Quake 4. As with the last Catalyst 6.6 release product support is limited to ATI Radeon Xpress, CrossFire Xpress and Radeon 9500 series or newer products. ATI’s Catalyst 6.7 software package is available for Windows XP, Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 and Windows XP Professional x64.

ATI has also released a new set of Catalyst 6.7 drivers for Linux. New features for ATI’s Catalyst 6.7 Linux Edition include X.org 7.1 support and Fedora Core package support. TV-out still doesn’t work on X1000-series products according to the release notes. ATI Catalyst Linux Edition drivers are available in 32-bit and 64-bit releases.

how come there havent been any news posts about nVidia driver updates? I used to rely on AT news for driver updates, now you dont mention them and I am two versions behind...

I am unsure as to whether or not I could use this update. I dont give a rat's ass about crossfire.

It is almost always a complete mystery whenever an ATI update appears.

does anyone really need it? Sometimes things speed up. most of the time its just 15 mins out of teh day wasted.

Unless your game(s) is/are some of those that received compatibility updates or bug fixes. Personally I've seen a lot of weirdness with my Nvidia card and Oblivion so I was interested when they mentioned Oblivion in the last Nvidia drivers, not the performance fixes (if there was any) but bug fixes interested me.

Drivers are not always about performance upgrades, I would hope both Nvidia and ATi have most of their performance improvements out there by now, all their cards have been final silicon for the last several months.

nVIDIA don't release drivers that often. They release BETA sets with stability issues quite often. But they only release about 4-6 full driver releases a year (vs ATi's 12 a year approach).

That's probably why.

oh... my... god.. (who i still don't believe in)... Does this mean i don't have to spend 15+ minutes each time i want to install ati drivers in linux?

None of the specific driver links work. They all just generate a 'session timed out' error.
