ASUS reckons that it will have the best looking smartwatch on the market

When the Android Wear operating system was first unveiled in March, the clear [hardware] star of the show was the Motorola Moto 360 smartwatch with its classic, round face. Since that time, some rather forgettable designs have hit the market in the form of the LG G Watch and the Samsung Gear Live.
While the Moto 360 has still yet to officially launch, a few newcomers are looking to take the spotlight away when it comes to good-looking smartwatches. LG has already shown off its new G Watch R, which also implements a round display, while Samsung is preparing the Gear S, which features a futuristic design and the homegrown Tizen mobile operating system.

ASUS doesn’t want to be left out of the game and is once again teasing its upcoming Android Wear smartwatch, only this time it actually has a name. The ZenWatch will be priced at less than $199 when it arrives on U.S shores next month according to Focus Taiwan. ASUS claims that the design of the watch has been “well received” by folks at Google, and that the new watch will look better than its pricier competitors.
The ZenWatch will be unveiled this Wednesday at the IFA tech conference held in Berlin, Germany.

I am not going back to wearing a watch

We were progressing nicely to a future where you only had to take one item with you when you went out. A future where payment is done over NFC, your car and home unlock through wifi, bluetooth, or NFC. Where your ID and Insurance cards can be digital.

Can this wearable fad just die already; so we can head towards that again.

I don't know about that, if I ever have to wear a suit I feel I should we wearing a watch. I wear a watch if I feel like it, it can be a fun accessory. I totally agree with you guys when it comes to the smart watches, I don't know why I need a smaller-screened device that does less than my smartphone does if I have my smartphone there anyway.

In my opinion a Watch is the single most important accessory a man can own.
It is not just an accessory, its your visual signature.
A Mens wardrobe consists mainly of suits, shirts, sweaters and jeans, so a watch is one of the few things with what a men can express his personality, or the way that he is feeling.
Its not only an instrument to tell time, its a reflection of ones personality. A man can easily be charakterized by the type of his watch.

While I certainly wouldn't go quite so deep with my feelings toward my watch, being more of a jeans & t-shirt with sneakers type of guy, I can honestly give anyone who cares these salient points, concerning my $50 Timex watch, versus their $600 phone:
1. my battery lasts 5-10 years, before requiring replacement
2. my watch is much more robust than your phone; it can take (and has taken) much more abuse, without breaking.
3. my watch will still be working, and accurate, during the same time period that you likely will have replaced your smart phone 4 times. Maybe more.

Is it old technology? Yep, you bet. But since I've worn one since I was ~7 or 8 years of age, it feels weird NOT to wear one.

All that being said, I cannot fathom that the market will be big enough, at any point in time, to see the number of models of "smart watches" we're seeing pop up last very long. I give it a year, no more than two, before most (if not all) of them disappear from the market.
