P5B Premium Vista Edition

ASUS releases new Vista Editions of NVIDIA nForce 590 SLI, nForce 570 SLI and Intel P965 based motherboards

ASUS today announced the launch of four new motherboards that take advantage new features found within Microsoft’s upcoming Windows Vista operating system. New features such as ScreenDuo, TPM and ASUS Accelerated Propeller are available on the new ASUS M2N32-SLI Premium Vista Edition and M2N-Plus Vista Edition for AMD socket AM2 processors and P5B Premium Vista Edition and P5B-Plus Vista Edition for Intel socket T (LGA775) processors.

The new ScreenDuo is ASUS’ take on a Windows SideShow device. It only comes packaged with the M2N32-SLI Premium and P5B Premium Vista Editions. ASUS doesn’t appear to offer the ScreenDuo as a separate accessory disappointingly. Nevertheless, the ScreenDuo can display RSS feeds, pull up your schedule and other simple tasks that doesn’t need full computing power to complete.

All four new motherboards feature support for Trusted Platform Modules (TPM) to allow a "securer" computing environment. Although TPM modules are supported via header on motherboard, the actual module itself is sold separately, however, with a TPM installed the hardware requirements for Microsoft’s BitLocker drive encryption is full-filled. This allows users to take advantage of the hardware encryption features of Windows Vista.

Lastly on the new feature list is the ASUS Accelerated Propeller (ASAP). ASAP is essentially an integrated flash drive that can be used with Windows Vista’s ReadyBoost performance-enhancing feature. ASUS doesn’t seem to mention the size of the ASAP feature though.

New Windows Vista features aside, the new ASUS M2N32-SLI Premium Vista Edition is powered by NVIDIA’s nForce 590 SLI MCP while the M2N-Plus Vista Edition is powered by the less featured nForce 570 SLI MCP. On the Intel side of things the new P5B Premium Vista Edition and P5B-Plus Vista Edition are powered by Intel’s P965 chipset.

I'd like to see an internal sideshow device for desktops that occupys 1 to 3 5.25" bays.

I'd like to see that too.

In addition to the features already mentioned it could be used to monitor the system, voltages, temps. and provide a direct interface to some of the boards features such a fan control.

Super casemodding skills won't be necessary to add a cool auxilliary display if these trends continue.

actually that would be useless, at least for 1-2 bay occupation. the screen would be too small to do anything useful. i would like to see this feature supported directly on the mainboard for use with HTPC cases that have proper LCD screens on the front.

I suggest the 1 bay solution because I can liken SideShow displays to the 320x240, 2.25" display on my smartphone (Cingular 3125/HTC StrTrk) which would nicely fit in a single 5.25" bay.

true, motherboards come with so many useless things, it's unbelievable.. I don't understand who spends 200+ dollars on a high end motherboard and uses onboard sound.. Like, how does that make sense.

The integrated sound is actually quite good. It also makes sense if your going to run sli and maybe have dual tv tuners- on your normal mobo, and these as well- unless you have a pci-e sound card from the year 2010, your SOL. They way to spot budget boards nowadays is by integrated graphics....

Give me a good 8 year old 2 channel sound card over anything integrated if the use is analog output. Paper specs are not as impressive as clean output, what some declare clean sounds like garbled junk to my ears but maybe they only listen to MP3 or game, weakest link factor gets involved.

I will always choose a board without TPM whenever possible. No thank you, I dont feel like paying more for less control over any system I own. DRM Nazis, get your hands off my hardware.

My first thought as well, tpm-hell no!

But read it, it says it does NOT have tpm, it has a tpm slot or socket or something. After some thought, I think its genius. They look to microsoft and the government and whoever like they are compliant with the tpm crap, but the enthusiasts will still buy it because it's not really compliant. It would be awesome if they had an unfortunate 'shortage' of the modules.

But, alas, don't expect to buy anything, not even a refrigerator, in ten years without a tpm. Unless you plan to shop on the tech black market, as that will be the only place to find non-tpm stuff. But I'm still hopeful that a hack can still be found if enough people look for it - it seems anything is hackable these days with enough time and will.

The slot takes up space, adds some cost, and is a stepping stone to having it embedded.

Buying it because it's not really complaint will have a worse effect in the long run than rejecting it in favor of hardware without any TPM support. Remember, when all is said and done, until a law requires it, your dollars speak louder than anything else.

Making slight of each minor inclusion is how it gets implemented eventually, you can't take away all the rights, all at once as that is too obvious to even the average joe consumer.
