ASUS releases a stylish 20.1" LCD with an integrated webcam

Webcams have been around for a few years and commonly used for taking personal mug shots, video conferencing, etc... The recent trend with webcams has been to integrate them into newer laptops such as Apple’s MacBook Pro. Desktops such as Apple’s iMac come equipped with an integrated web cam as well. There hasn’t been any means for a user who wants to build their own system or purchase an off the shelf system to have their own webcam integrated into the monitor.

ASUS has realized this and released the new PW201 LCD monitor. The PW201 is a 20.1” widescreen LCD display with a 16:10 aspect ratio capable of a 1680x1050 resolution. What sets the PW201 apart from other 20.1” LCD monitors is the integration of a mega-pixel webcam towards the top edge of the bezel, eliminating clunky stand alone USB webcams. Aside from the convenience of an integrated webcam the PW201 has pretty standard specs including an 800:1 contrast ratio and brightness levels of 300 nits.

As far as input options go there are plenty of options available including DVI-D, D-SUB VGA, Composite, S-Video and Component (YPbPr) inputs. In terms of aesthetics the PW201 has a stylish minimalist design that can tilt and rotate for portrait and landscape viewing modes. It’s also wall mountable with a standard VESA 100x100 wall mount. The monitor also features two built-in 3 watt stereo speakers.

I don't know who thinks that is stylish. Slim those bezels down a bit, and get a more elegant looking stand.

Two of the largest taiwanese companies, ASUS and quanta make all the apple stuff. But keep believing what you want

Right, but Apple stuff is designed in the States, and merely manufactured by Asus.

This does not preclude designed-in-Taiwan products from being hideous.

I have a feeling that will be pretty expensive as well, but looks like a nice product.

But I wonder if someone using that will have to keep adjusting the screen between viewing and using the camera...

Adjust so you're centered in the webcam, then adjust back in order to view the scren, etc.

you can probably adjust the camera by itself.

I guess 1.3MP must be 1280x1024. It's so close they could have almost made it the same res as the screen.

Camera in wrong position

The camera needs to be on a long stalk above the monitor so that people can do those stupid MySpace angled pictures.

Heh. I still don't know about integrating the camera into the monitor - for video chat it's fine, but you do lose the ability to move the camera on its own should you want to. Just because Apple did it doesn't make it a good idea.

Speaks

Is there a model w/out the speakers... Seems every mid-high end monitor always has dazam speakers attached to it.

They should realize that it's the enthusiast who are going to buy these screens and who doesn't have a set of comp speaks already. They could drop the speakers shave off 100$ on the price tag and have a dazam better looking product.
