Dirk Meyer - courtesy of AMD
Hector Ruiz will step down from his role as President of AMD

For those of you who idolize Hector Ruiz, you may have to get used to a new face around AMD: Dirk Meyer.  Ruiz will remain the CEO of the company, but Meyer, effective immediately, is now the Chief Operating Officer and President.  Meyer is a veteran of Intel, DEC and AMD, and like myself, a University of Illinois graduate.

There is more to read on AMD's official press release.

This is *very* good. Meyer was one of the core designers of the DEC Alpha and is more or less the father of the Athlon. Hector brought an important level of execution discipline to AMD, but is not liked by the rank and file in the slightest. Dirk should be able to take what Hector has done and make the job fun again. I think both mentalities(and individuals) are necessary for AMD to thrive and that them splitting the top positions is probably some of the best news from the company this year.

"My new position also gives Hector more bandwidth to focus on leading the company as CEO."

Seems like the microprocessor industry has really rubbed off on him. :D

It's always good, though, when responsibilities can be divided like this. As the saying (more or less) goes, why have one man do the work of ten men when ten men can do it.

"So, I think the same thing of the music industry. They can't say that they're losing money, you know what I'm saying. They just probably don't have the same surplus that they had." -- Wu-Tang Clan founder RZA
