Up to 40-percent in some cases

During AMD's Analyst Day today, the company announced several news bits concerning its LIVE! initiative. One of the highlights day was AMD's announcement that it's LIVE! platform was doing much better than Intel's Viiv, at least in retail sales. According to figures obtained from retailers nationwide, AMD LIVE! computers were outperforming Viiv PCs anywhere from 5-percent to 40-percent in the most recent week of December.

This figure does not include information from direct-to-customer sales, such as that from Dell, which arguably constitutes a major portion of Intel Viiv sales.  The data also was only polled from U.S. vendors and did not take into account Viiv or LIVE! sales in HTPC hot-spots like Japan, Korea and Taiwan.

The platform has seen a huge push by AMD in the last quarter of 2006, especially after the company completed the purchase of ATI Technologies. One of the key aspects of LIVE! was to integrate all major components together. For Intel, this was easy as it has been developing both processors and chipsets for years for various markets. With AMD and ATI now one, AMD is definitely taking advantage of ATI's chipset portfolio and expertise.

AMD's strategy with LIVE! going forward addresses a few key areas for the company:
  • Leveraging chipset designs (ATI)
  • Reinforce AMD as the "smarter choice"
  • Market LIVE! as a better media experience
  • Associate strongly with Microsoft's Vista
  • Invest more into digital-home solutions and products
  • Develop more partnerships with HD content providers
Analysts are seeing that AMD is leading the trend for home-theater focused computers. The company has strong partnerships and just recently announced its QuadFX platform. Besides LIVE!, AMD is doing well in other areas of its business as well. According to its financial reports, AMD's market share is doubling year after year.

A little misleading?

Since the data only includes the U.S. retail market, DELL is missing from the analysis, which obviously skews the picture. But don't let facts get the way.

...Dell is based out of Texas if I'm not mistaken and Texas hadn't seceded from the union the last time I checked.

It's called "direct sales model" or "online" as opposed to "retail."

Good to see the figures, but considering that the chart only shows 70% of the market, how does the other 30% look like? Also, the Dec figures should be taken with a grain of salt as it still has many days to go before the results become concrete. If you eliminate the Dec figures, it looks like Viiv and Live! are still competing toe to toe with each other. Only time will tell if Live! becomes the true winner.

sorry but this slideshow is branded as AMD! its simillar to ATI comparing its vid cards with NV and showing the skewed results in its own slide show.

Where are the official figures that includes every manufac that supply amd live! and intel viiv

The other 30% is essentially Dell, which is almost purely ViiV.

AFAIK, Dell never introduced VIIV, but they do introduced Live !

I saw this some where in the last month or two in Anand, Xbit, Tomshardware, The Inquirer

That would be like Dell not introducing Centrino. Check the Dell site again. Most of their Dimension and XPS systems can be ViiV.

I haven't heard a thing about live or viiv since they were announced, I can't think of a single PC I've seen anywhere advertise either of them.

The only people that might care are the sales people at CC, BB, or CompUsa that could use it as a sales pitch.

Basically, any AMD based desktop with an X2 CPU, Windows MCE and 1 GB of memory can be branded an AMD Live system. While Viiv brings CE features like instant on/off, easy network connectivity, specific hardware configurations that must be met and access to exclusive streaming content.

This is nothing but a marketing tactic from AMD.

Ok, so the ONLY difference between the two platforms (other than the fact that the Viiv platform must use all Intel components) is the "Quick Resume Technology driver" on the Viiv platform, and that's not even required for all chipsets.

Also, if you look at this feature, all it does is turn the monitor/TV off, disables the keyboard and mutes the sound.

Another interesting thing to note is the fact that the AMD Live! requires a DVD±RW optical drive while the Intel Viiv platform does not. You could sell a PC with absolutely no DVD playback capabilities and still label it as a Viiv system.

It seems that Intel actually has the more relaxed guidelines.


The benefit to Live!?!

I built my most recent X2-based PC and in the bios I have the option to designate it as an AMD Live! PC. I haven't figured out what benefits, if any, would result from that designation. Can anyone out there tell me?

Absolutely nothing. All this LIVE! and Viiv shit is just a certain hardware configuration that retialers charge more for.

I built a HTPC in 2004 with a P 4 1.8 A Ghz, 256 MB RAM and a Pinnacle PCTV Stereo Card with a SB Live 5:1 Sound Card and a CDRW. It couldn't record at DVD formats very well ( 720*576 @ 4.5 Mbps , 29.95 fps)very well-- the sound lagged behind the video so I thought that the problem was with the processing power of the chip--only later I found out that 512 MB of RAM was a necessity. At that config it recorded to DVD formats just fine--with the extra RAM--I would convert the videos to XVid and then burn them onto a CD
