Single-core socket 939 Opteron's discontinued

AMD has sent out a new product change notification issuing the discontinue date of a couple Opteron 140 series single-core workstation and server processors. The products affected this time around include socket 939 Opteron models 144, 146, 148 and Opteron HE 148 processors. March 25th, 2007 will be the last day to place an order on these processors with September 30th, 2007 being the last ship date. AMD states the discontinuance reason is the products will no longer be manufactured.

Intel and AMD have issued plenty of product change notifications discontinuing processors in the past couple of months. AMD has previously notified its customers of discontinuing various socket 939 and 754 products including Athlon 64 X2 4200+, 4600+ and 4800+. Socket 940 Opteron processors were also previously discontinued as well.

... considering dualcores are cheap now. And getting AM2 to fill the lines probably :)

Alas, my first thought is...

So how long do we get our 939 X2's?

I posted in the anadtech forums just last week wondering why the heck the newegg price has jumped up to $175 for a 3800+ X2. Now after this announcement I'm getting nervous.

I would have to assume that they won't kill the 939 line THAT QUICKLY. Or would they?

They announced several months ago that they were planning on discontinuing 939 by the end of the year (roughly).
As lines get discontinued, prices go up...supply and demand.

Bottom line is that you probably won't ever see 939 X2s any lower than they are now...

Glad to see they try to avoid this annoying non-futureproofness with the AM2 to AM2+ socket somewhat.

I'm not so sure about this. the 3800+ prices are going up as they have already been discountinues. However the 4200+ and 4600+ 939s are going down. This is not surprising since they haven't been discontinued. Also, with the upcoming launch of new lines on the AM2 one key question is whether the 939 4200+ and 4600+ will get whatever price cuts the AM2 will get. Remember these have not been discontinued and distros can still order them. So it's easily possible, perhaps likely the 939 will get these price cuts. They won't last for long after that and the gap between them and the AM2 will widen but I wouldn't be so sure the 939 X2s have reached bottom yet...

It would appear that my lowly HP Pavillion won't be upgradable to 10Ghz like the guy at Best Buy told me.
