Mobility Radeon HD DX10 cards for laptops coming in July

In addition to desktop parts, AMD is officially introducing today ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2000 video solutions for notebook computers.

“We set out to create a family of products that would revolutionize the graphics market by introducing leading-edge technology at game-changing price points,” said Rick Bergman, senior vice president, AMD Graphics Products Group. “We’ve delivered on this challenge, broadening the enthusiast gaming market so that more people than ever before have access to the phenomenal gaming and multimedia experiences that the ATI Radeon HD 2000 series introduces.”

Available immediately is the Mobility Radeon HD 2300, the entry-level part, which will be found in mainstream notebooks aimed at the sub-$1000 market. The HD 2300 is built off the 90nm process and is designed primarily just to power the Windows Vista Aero interface and playback high-definition video.

Coming in July will be the higher-end 65nm DX10 parts, the Mobility Radeon HD 2400 and HD 2400 XT, which will bring gaming capabilities to thin and light midrange notebooks. Available at the same time will also be the top-end Mobility Radeon HD 2600 and HD 2600 XT aimed at enthusiasts and gamers interested in high-performance notebooks.

Notebooks from OEM partners including Acer, ASUS, Fujitsu, Fujitsu-Siemens Computers, Gateway, HP, LG, Packard Bell, Samsung, and Toshiba, and ODM white book partners including Arima, ASUS, ECS, First International Computer Inc., and MSI, will be available beginning in May.

LOL, now they are calling their old DX9 part Radeon HD???

In case some are wondering: Mobility Radeon HD 2300 is an old 90nm R5xx based part, that's why it's available immediately.

Quite misleading advertising in the official press release: http://www.amd.com/gb-uk/Corporate/VirtualPressRoo...

They mention several times how the Radeon HD line has DX10 support while mentioning in the fine print that Mobility Radeon HD 2300 is only a DX9 part.

Wouldn't be the first time the used the numbering system for a new family on an old card.

Radeon 9200 was crap compared to an 8500
X700 was trash compared to a 9800
X1300 compared to X850 etc

Don't forget the Geforce 4 MX 400. That was a joke. A geforce 2 mx could outperform it.

Erm, no it couldn't. A GeForce 4 MX (any of them) was significantly faster than any GeForce 2 MX (unless you meant the GTS or Ultra in which case you should've said). Why you are bringing up NVidia in this I don't know...

Now, they were both R200 based DX8 chips. "Radeon 9200" is another example of a misleading product name since it didn't had DX9 capabilities like Radeon 9500-9800 series.

As someone else mentioned, you are comparing low-to-mid range chips from one generation with the high end chip from the previous.

The GeForce 7950 GX2 spanks the pants off the 8400 GT, even though the 8400 GT has a higher part number.

A more apt comparison is the fact that the Radeon 9100 was barely more than a rebadged Radeon 7100, which was just a rebadged "original" Radeon, from the technology standpoint. At that point, ATI had been using the first number of the part to designate its Direct3D generation. 7x00 parts were Direct3D 7, 8x00 parts were Direct3D 8, and 9x00 parts were (nominally) Direct3D 9 parts. Yet the 9100 was really only a DirectX 7 part. (At least the X1300 is a DirectX 9 part.)

Yeah ATI has done the renaming of older generation hardware to new.

Radeon X2300 I think is supposed to be a low end RV5xx with a UVD.

Radeon 9000/9100/9200 were all derived from the Radeon 8500 generation.

Radeon X300/X550/X600 were all derived from 9600 technology.

To be fair we have this occuring on the Nvidia side a little bit as well, Geforce 7100 is actually based on NV44 technology.

Nvidia is absolutely guilty of it too, I wasn't intending to single ATI out. The Geforce4 MX is probably the worst case of this ever.

These aren't as bad, since "X000"-series was based on R300 (SM2) and thus both 9600 and X300 had similar capabilities.

Same applies to GeForce 7100, 6000- and 7000- series cards were all SM3 cards.

It's also ridiculous that they're calling it the Mobility Radeon HD 2300. HD is supposed to stand for High Definition. The 2600 and 2900 cards should be able to do graphics and encoding at high def.

Can the 2300? If not, why is it called "HD"?

Ouch. An uppercut right to Dell's jaw. Is Dell looking woozy? Is he gonna hit the mat sometime soon?

C'mon Dell, get up and fight! You're the one making the price war give us $599 laptops that crush the $2000 ones we bought last year. Fight dammit, FIGHT!!

i heard dell is coming out with it's santa rosa based inspirons in june. i would imagine that they would have something new in terms of graphics options then. if they don't then you are right and they are going to be in trouble. maybe they should bring in Apollo Creed to get them back into shape.


lousy performance

i just read an in-depth review of the desktop 2900XT on the german site 3dcenter. here is the link:

in some benches the card gets beaten by the old 1900XT (!), while in most it is clearly behind the 8800GTX. hardocp show it to be slower than an 8800GTS.

so i wonder now how AMD/ATI intends to compete with nvidia in the mobile market? better power management, perhaps? in a laptop that surely matters, but is nvidia behind in terms of power management technology?

oh jesus... i just reread the article... this is actually one of their DX9 parts with a new name.... how embarrassing (for me because of my reading comprehension skills, and for them because they suck).

now it would be funny of that DX9 2300 would actually be faster than the DX10 2400...

I remember when I first heard that AMD had picked up ATI and I could not for the life of me understand why. At the time, the sweet spot for gamers anyway was an AMD 64 FX series coupled with an Nvidia 7900GTX (or two). Looks like AMD picked up boulder and they're tryin to swim with it.

Good to have a serious competitor to Nvidia in the notebook segment of the market.

Hoping for lower prices,better quality & most of all those drivers !
