News from the Tokyo Game Show -- before the show even begins
The Tokyo Game Show will kick off on Thursday, giving major videogame companies a top venue to announce and show off upcoming products. Following the collapse of the glitzy E3, Tokyo Game Show (TGS) will likely be the biggest games tradeshow of the year. Although the show is a day away, there is already a vast amount of TGS-related news thanks to early press conferences and releases. The week before the show, Microsoft held its own pre-TGS press conference to announce several of its big projects in Japan. Of particular note was the announcement of Ninja Gaiden 2, exclusively for the Xbox 360. Microsoft was also proud to announce its exclusive (for now) Square-Enix property, Infinite Undiscovery. Konami scheduled its press conference on Wednesday afternoon, jumping the show by less than a full day. The conference, liveblogged by Kotaku, didn’t drop any major bombshells, but did reveal a few new titles on Nintendo systems targeted to non-gamers. Of major interest is Metal Gear Solid, which comprises of no less than five different titles at the show this year. Metal Gear Solid 4, which is still a PlayStation 3 exclusive, will be playable to the public for the first time on 50 demo kiosks. Those who aren’t at the show will still be able to view the brand new trailer, likely available both on the web and on the PlayStation Network. Metal Gear Online will bring the series into the multiplayer realm with squad-based combat. A “starter pack” of MGO will ship with MGS4, but not much else is known about the gameplay. Much will be revealed when the game hits the show floor in the form of a six-on-six playable demo. The PSP will play host to a pair of Metal Gear games, with MGS Portable Ops Plus being one and MGS Digital Graphic Novel 2 being the other. For Japanese gamers only, it seems, the fifth game, is exclusive to mobile phones and will come preinstalled on a Sony Ericsson mobile.
The Tokyo Game Show opens in less than 10 hours from now. There's more news and coverage from the event show floor to come!
