I'm not really seeing the appeal of the Eee PC 1000, other than it's small size.

From Newegg:

Eee PC
Operating System Linux
CPU Type Intel Atom CPU
Screen 10" WSVGA
Memory Size 1GB DDR2
Hard Disk 40GB S.S.D (+ 20GB Internet Storage)
$669.99

lenovo IdeaPad
Operating System Windows Vista Home Premium
CPU Type Intel Pentium dual-core T2390(1.86GHz)
Screen 15.4" WXGA
Memory Size 3GB DDR2
Hard Disk 160GB
Optical Drive Dual Layer DVD Burner
$649.99

Such a comparison has probably been made before on here. If you knock about $200 off the Eee PC, then it's a slightly more compelling product to me.

Considering the Eee's sole purpose in life is to act as an ultra-portable "nettop", the size IS the only reason to buy it.

Those systems are hardly comparable to each other. You are comparing an ultra portable to what is in "drag-top" territory.

If you want to compare it to a more mainstream ultra-portable you should compare it to the Sony Vaio TZ or why not the Asus U2E or U6E.

Apples for apples mate. If you don't understand why your comparison is a load of bollox, then an ultra portable is most probably not for you anyhow.
