as good as some gaming notebooks may be, in my opinion, they just cant replace a well-configured* desktop for price and performance

* = logitech g11 keyboard and razer copperhead mouse

Agreed. Especially considering the lack of upgradeability in laptops. Just wait until that video card fails and you're left with the basic onboard/default graphics. Then it becomes little more than an overweight email machine. :/

It's a matter of oppinion. I paid about 30% more for my laptop (the same one being reviewed here) than I would have paid for an equivalent desktop. It takes about 60 seconds to pack up the cable, mouse, headset, and laptop into my bag. I paid a half-weeks paycheck and expandability for impeccable mobility. I guess these same arguments are often made for the macbook air, but I don't feel that I am losing very much current-gen usability. Two years down the road, it won't quite be up to par...but, two years down the road, I would want to have a new build anyway.

As I speak (er, type) I am at a friends house, sitting on the floor, enjoying having more power on my lap than is immediately behind me (his desktop is a DIY build, a few years old).

My friend's Geforce 8600 laptop can run games capably but suffers from the odd stutter, almost as if there's a bottleneck some where. All of his laptop is up to the job so I'm guessing that it's just a problem with laptops not being designed for games. ie, CSS runs at 100 fps or so, then suddenly pauses for about a second if somebody fires etc. 2 GB of RAM and a dual core CPU shouldn't have that problem. It's the same with my (cough) ati 9700, 1.5 Ghz celeron one. hough with that I accept that it's not up to the job.

I also find the screens on laptops disappointing. You just can't beat a good old 20 / 24 inch widescreen panel, now, can you? Go on, vote me down because I'm conjuring up pictures of me sitting in the train station with my 5.1 speaker setup and 24" monitor. You know you're just jealous.

3dGameMan review of HIS 4870

While this is mostly just a product review (instead of hard core benchmarking / stressing), I really like his presentation. A little wordy is spots, but mostly to the point. Other places should make video reviews standard practice.

Please explain how this video "review" even begins to become a product review. The last time I checked, video cards required benchmarks and testing to be considered a review. Otherwise, it becomes an advertisement... I could just visit the manufacturers site if all I want are specs and pictures.
