When is HD 4000 coming out again? I'll take the smaller manufacturing process and less heat -- my computer room gets hot enough already being on the third floor. From what I've read, HD 4000 will be close in performance, but much cheaper and less power hungry.

in about a week.
there is some unclartity due to amd shifting the date constantly.
however I am waiting for the 4870x2
( if that does not take too long)

That's the question I'm asking, too. Some preliminary benchmarking over at XS shows the HD4850 being able to compete with the 9800GTX, so the 4870 should be a decent performer as well.

If that is the case it means ati will be retaking the performance lead with the 4870x2, but the successor to gtx280 was rumored to be already taped out since nvidia knew it was a turkey that needs a die shrink.

People should wait at least few weeks before buying, for that they will get the die shrinked revisions. That should mean fewer bugs and a cooler GPU.

All of the rumors I've heard indicate that the die shrinked parts will not be available for about four months.

Yeah I don't get it, Nvidia is so costly and for what, 20 more frames per second, or 500 more numbers in a benchmarking softwares (Im being generous with the numbers I know)

I am suprised AMD isn't dominating the graphics market based solely on their price:performance. Can people really tell the difference between 20fps? I know I cant, they only see the difference on paper or numbers, really.

I can say with confidence my next build/upgrade will probably be in favor of AMD based on price alone. They are going GDDR5 isn't that where high resolutions profit? In memory speed? and I only use a 22"

I can tell the difference between 10fps and 30fps, which is a 20fps difference.

Thats if your comparing an AGP card to a PCIe, yeah.

Im talking about performance differences in a 3870 to a 9800GTX. Can you see where I'm at?

Proper, next gen graphics cards.

By far the best news on this site.

Anandtech shows 2x8800GT keeping up with GTX 280 with ease. If you realize that you can get 2x8800GT for less than €300 and the GTX 280 costs more than DOUBLE. I wouldn't call it "the best deal ever" just yet;)

Meh . . . It would be a lot more interesting news if it was available today at launch and it didn't have an MSRP of $659. Now I'm thinking that maybe the rumors floating around about nvidia having yield issues were spot on.

I understand that they want the bragging rights for the being the company with the fastest single GPU, but if you can't sell it for under $500, to me it's a moot point. If I were building a system for someone today (assuming availability,) I wouldn't use either one of these cards. Hopefully ATI's launch in a few days will be more exciting and/or motivate nvidia to drop the price.

If they are only pulling 300 chips from a wafer like the anandtech article says that there is a yield problem in itself.

It's just a great big pig that needs a die shrink horribly.

Can you imagine the cooling needed in a room with three of these pigs all SLI'd like in the pic above? Not to mention the power draw. Punch the power button on your comp and feel the corner of your house lift up off the slab, you know, the corner where the power meter is located. It starts spinning so fast that it actually begins to generate lift.

Sorry to say but this card is a turkey.

A great big power gobbling overcooked turkey, stick a fork in it.

$650 bucks for something that devours over 200 watts of power and can't outperform a 9800gx2?

I sincerely hope it is the worst drivers in history or something.

Nvidia released the unappealing 9800 followed by the underwhelming GTX200.

It's safe to say we're back to the Geforce days where there's no competition and a company becomes stagnant.

I'm skipping the GT for their 2009 product. And will be a nice performing 9800x2 once it goes under $400.

Thanks.

What I'm dying to ask is why the 9800GX2 is $100 cheaper than this card, when it is obviously much more superior. NVIDIA has really been a big disappointment as of late. I have no doubt that the HD 4870 will eat the GTX 280 alive next week..... with a doable pricetag to boot.

RE: Gobble Gobble
By Goty on 6/16/2008 3:38:31 PM , Rating: 2
I don't know if a single HD4870 will be enough to top the GTX 280, but an X2 should definitely at least give it a run for its money.

RE: Gobble Gobble
By SavagePotato on 6/16/2008 3:55:00 PM , Rating: 2
The speculation online was that the 4870x2 would perform about 1.25x faster than a 9800gx2.

Rumors are rumors mind you.

Often times though in the graphics card world they seem to be 100% correct. They were with the ati 2900's and again with the gtx280 being a big powerbeast turkey.

If that's how it turns out it could be like reliving the 9700pro ati glory days this summer all over again.
