Sony talks PlayStation 3 games of 2008

Sony held one its PlayStation Day events in London, leading to lots of PlayStation 3 related news. SCEI chief Kaz Hirai said on stage that games such as Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, Little Big Planet, Metal Gear Solid 4, Resistance 2, Haze, MotorStorm 2 and Buzz will be the key games for 2008 – making PS3’s second year look a lot stronger than its first.

Resistance 2 to Boast Multiplayer Insanity
The first Resistance was the best of the bunch during the PS3 launch, and remains one of the biggest online multiplayer games for the console. The sequel looks to take things to the next level with a stunning eight-player online co-op and 60-player PVP matches. Such things are made possible with dedicated servers rather than peer-to-peer games.

Killzone 2 Slated for 2009
The first-person shooter that set an incredibly high bar for itself before the launch of the PlayStation 3 is now set to release in 2009. Sony UK boss David Reeves gave the date of February next year, though that date has yet to be confirmed for outside Europe.

MotorStorm Sequel Named, Detailed
The PS3 will be getting another big second entry with MotorStorm Pacific Rift. The sequel is to take place within an environment modelled after Hawaii and vegetation is said to have a pronounced effect on the player’s path and choice of vehicle. Twice as many tracks are promised, as well as 16-player online modes.

LittleBigPlanet Pushed to October
The innovative title of teamwork and creation has been pushed back slightly from a September to October release. The delay has yet to be confirmed for markets outside of Europe, but it’s conceivable that Sony would want this title out in all territories in time for the holiday season.

Metal Gear Solid 4 PS3 Bundle for Europe
Already announced for the U.S. and Japan, it was confirmed today that a special bundle will exist for gamers hoping to pick up a PlayStation 3 console and Metal Gear Solid 4 in a single purchase. For 439.99 Euros (USD$696), gamers will get what appears to be a 40GB PlayStation 3 console and a SIXAXIS controller. A similar bundle also exists with Grand Theft Auto IV. Unfortunately, the DualShock 3 has yet to be announced to Europe.

Prototype Also Delayed to 2009
The delay of Sierra and Radical’s prototype was not revealed at the UK event, but it’s all the same for PlayStation 3 users. A publisher representative confirmed the news, saying, “in the simplest explanation possible, we need more time to deliver the game the team initially set out to create.”

Great to see some the PlayStation ramping things up but why is it that Europe is treated so badly (no sign of the DualShock 3) always last in line?

I read this morning (on the BBC tech news web feed) that the PS3 has overtaken the xBox in Europe in sales (yes it was a Sony press release if memory serves) yet we are still treated like second class gamers.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7386879.stm

Sadly, there were few numbers forthcoming in the article, I guess the total sales for consoles must be lower in the EU than in the States/far east making it a market that is less important?

Or do they not care as they know that they need to work harder to win over American gamers and take Europeans for granted?

American gamers still don't have the PSP camera or GPS while Europe has had them for about a year. Europeans are also going to get the PlayTV before anybody else. Sony is just slow getting new accessories outside of Japan. I don't know why.

My one beef with the PS3 right now game wise if the fact that the bulk of games coming out are either first/third person shooters and driving. There are more games coming out now but there still isn't a lot of variety. I'd really like to see some more platformers and RPGs.

Blimey, it all seems rather haphazard how they release things? There any weird things like this going on with xBox/nintendo peripherals or is it that Sony are trying to do to much at once?

IS the PlayTV thing the digital TV tuner that uses the PS3 hard drive to record programs on? I remember seeing something about that a long time ago, mite be useful I guess.

It does seem strange that games are taking soooo long to come out.

Little big world was touted around how long ago now?

It's hardly MGS or GTA either now is it, what's taking so long?

The glut of FPS games seems to be typical over the whole gaming industry but probably more obvious on the PS3 due to a lack of titles in general?

Have you seen LittleBigPlanet? Don't think it's an easy game they can just push out. It's a very ambitious project dude.

The "lack of titles" argument is a bit tired too, it was very in vogue last year but if you can't find games to play on any of the consoles you're not trying.

That's just the tip of the iceberg with LBP

Pretty funny stuff

No, LittleBigPlanet is not MGS or GTA, it's much larger. You are talking about users being able to create their own custom levels and share them out to the world. After another player(s) go through them, they can post comments about it to inform other interested gamers on whether the lvl was good or not.

At the same time, as a player is going through the lvl, they can access the modification tools and change the lvl as they run through.

Pictures stored onto your hard drive can be converted into "stickers" that you place onto the user created lvls.

Users may also create their own objects to add into the game. They can give away these created objects as prizes for completing their custom lvls. When you get a prize, youc an add it to your own custom lvls that you create, but you aren't allowed to give it away.

LittleBigPlanet is a much larger project than MGS4 or GTA IV...combined.

Remember gamers outside of Japan tend to be conservative, meaning they stick with the well known game plays. I remember all the odd games for the PS2 that had come out in Japan but never made their way out of Asia. Some of the games released over there might be considered too cutesy over here or lewd or too hard (Still thinking of the old Mario days).

Let them test the waters and if it proves popular then it'll make its way around.

MGS4 bundle

When will the MGS4 bundle be available here in the states? Same day as the game launches? If I'm able, I would like to get one of these bundles as it comes with a DS3 controller and the game.
