Why this card is so expensive? The benchmarks not only show minimal improvement over the GTX,they establish the fact that this card runs quite a bit slower in Vista than XP. I'm sure this is one bad ass GPU, but I just don't think the cost premium is justified, when for $350-$400 less, you could still have a kick ass card. Bleeding edge = bleeding wallet.

MSRP is $830 according to eVGA's card

If you're willing to spend that kind of money on a video card, you probably don't really care.

It's more expensive because it says "Ultra" on the end and has a different HSF.

Also does higher overclocks while not needing a volt mod or a watercooled system.

to me a few more mhz and performance isnt worth double the expense

To you, but there are other people out there who do NOT want to voltmod their video cards and move to watercooling to get the clocks they want. Thats what $200 more gets you, higher clocks without voltage changes and change in cooling system (water). Also, its not DOUBLE the price as you say MSRP of a GTX is $620 and ULTRA is $830.

There are 8800GTX boards coming factory OC'd at clock speeds that exceed the Ultra, and memory speeds that are damn close. Why, even if you had the money, buy an Ultra
instead? So you could tell all your friends that you have one? I really see no other reason you would make that decision. But hey, I can't afford one anyway.

R600

When is the official launch and when will AT review this monster?!?!?!?!? Sorry, I'm building a new rig right now and I'm just getting impatient.

*insert gun in mouth*

Two bloody weeks? Hmm... I guess I can live off the integrated Intel GMA X3000 for a little while. Was AMD/ATI going to hard launch the whole R600 line on the 14th or just the HD2900XT and XTX? I thought I had read that they were launching everything from IGP to mobile to budget to mainstream to high end all at once.

Actually, the XTX only on Q3. They'll lauch all the other cards.

And from the leaked bench, the 2900XT is in the same level as the 8800 GTS.

Give or take, most of the 'results' I've read so far show the 2900xt edging out the 8800GTS is most situations.

As normal, it will all come down to price (which, IIRC, the 2900xt is supposed to be between $400 - 450 at release).

According to every credible news story posted in the last two weeks, the XTX will be available this month, not in Q3.

AT already has a review of the reference hardware for the 8800 Ultra.
http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=2979

DT doesn't seem to post new AT reviews until the next day. I don't know if it's just the timing of when each site publishes their articles, but I find it annoying. Considering the personal and professional links between the two companies, you'd think DT would list AT reviews of new hardware first, but it doesn't seem to work out that way.

u people r crazy if u buy this overclocked 8800GTX for nearly double the value for the performance gain of 5 percent

RE: crazy
By Psychless on 5/2/2007 5:01:59 PM , Rating: 3
630 * 2 = 850?

I believe they taught multipication in third grade. Anyways what some people wish to spend on a video card is really none of your business. It might be crazy for you to spend that much but for others it might not. And 'u' and 'r' are letters not words.

Holy Crap!

This video card is more expensive than my entire computer!

I guess I'm not nVidia's target market!

again
By AntDX316 on 5/2/2007 4:09:54 PM , Rating: 2
nvidia probably only spent 20 dollars MAX in upgrades over the 8800GTX even if there was competition to stomp nvidia they can drop the price to 450 for this no problem

nvidia knows there r people crazy enough to buy this and even if they sell 50 and make a profit of 300 per sale it was all well worth it

probably its just a present to show ATI and AMD their dominance hahaha

Awesome
