Grand Theft Auto IV is the top story on all accounts, even for Jack Thompson

GTA IV on PS3 vs. Xbox 360
For those fortunate enough to own both consoles, the question burning on many minds is which version to buy. Surely the hardcore fan already owns his or her copy of the game, but those waiting for a definitive answer on which version is superior likely won’t find the decision easy to make. Comparison videos show that both versions appear almost identical, while other hands on give slight edge to the PlayStation 3 version. Perhaps the best answer is to just buy whichever one your friends have so that you can play online with them.

GTA IV Xbox 360 DLC This Summer?
One big factor Microsoft was counting on was that gamers would choose an Xbox 360 over a PlayStation 3 because its platform’s version of GTA IV would come with the promise of exclusive DLC. That downloads may arrive sooner than expected. According to comments made by GTA’s infamous radio show host Lazlo, the Xbox 360 could see the DLC as soon as this summer, while also adding that the PS3 might receive something of its own too.

GTA IV Freezing on Some Consoles
While the majority of gamers who have picked up Grand Theft Auto IV are reporting nothing but an exceptional gaming experience, not all is perfect. Some are reporting the game is freezing during early cutscenes, where the game’s visuals will refuse to advance while the audio continues. Rockstar support acknowledged this problem, which apparently affects both PS3 and Xbox 360 version, but is more common on 60GB PS3 consoles. Rockstar has yet to officially address this issue.

Jack Thompson Owns Grand Theft Auto IV
It’s unknown if it’s in his possession solely for the purpose of spreading misinformation about the game, but he’s got his hands on a copy of GTA IV.

Duke Nukem Forever Seen by Outside Eyes
Even though it’s still the butt of many vapourware jokes, 3DRealms assures everyone that Duke Nuken Forever is still a real product in development. To help prove this, the developer invited Shacknews to view actual gameplay of DNF running on actual computer hardware, showing gameplay scenarios, mechanics, and environments. “We actually got to see...environmental puzzles and interactivity, a host of finished weapons, the existence of an in-game forklift, and plenty of heads and arms being blown off,” wrote Shacknews owner Steve “sCary” Gibson. “We both confidently agree that after seeing this demonstration, Duke Nukem Forever is looking great, and will easily stand apart from the crowd in both visual and gameplay styles.”

Converter Allows PS2 Guitars on PS3
The whole business of guitar incompatibility for Rock Band on PlayStation 3 is a difficult point for gamers. Thankfully, accessory maker The Ant Commandos has released a converter which will allow PS2 Guitar Hero guitars to work correctly on the PlayStation 3, be it on Guitar Hero III or Rock Band. The handy accessory retails for $19.99.

GTA IV 360

Picked up my copy yesterday. Played it last night and so far its amazing. The controls feel about the same but the experience feels completely different. As for performance, I've got an Elite and while I don't know if it buffers anything on the hard drive (there is no optional install that you actually choose), the game plays beautifully. When going fast in a car I don't notice any pop in even with a 6 star wanted level and the cops after me.

PS - If you want an easy 6 star wanted level at the beginning of the game, try to cross the bridge to a still locked part of the city. The second you cross the concrete barriers with two cops standing there, you get it. Good luck escaping. I did but ended up dying when my car exploded just after I dove out. But the explosion was so pretty....

Teamxbox game this game a perfect 10/10 - they didn't even give that to any other games... is it really that good? From the videos I've seen, I can't comprehend how they gave the graphics a 9.8/10. WTF?

RE: GTA IV 360

Honestly the graphics aren't even a factor in this game being good. The graphics could be the same as last generations GTA games and it would still be amazing. They only add to the immersion but yes they are incredible.

And be sure to pick up a hooker, chose the $70 option, and look through the windshield. They've "improved" things...

I've played the GTA on my 360, and tested my friends version on my PS3. Both on my 30" Dell 3008 because of it's superior colour reproduction and 2560x1600 res that handles non-native resolutions very well.

The PS3 version seems to be rendered at a lower res... like they are doing a Halo3, rendering it at something like 640p... there is less popup on the PS3 though, buts its not exactly bad on 360 to begin with, still way better than any previous GTA. Frame rates seemed very similar on both, with both suffering very slight slow downs, but nothing big. 360 seems to have better depth of field blur, but i've noticed this is normally the case as the PS3's geforce 7 based GPU just cant handle this task as well.

I prefer the 360 version because of the cleaner graphics, 360 controller design (no finger slipping off the trigger button when driving!), and exclusive content.

With your 3008WFP how are you handling the signal? Are you doing 1:1 pixel mapping with the image just in the centre of the screen or are you doing aspect ratio scaling?

The graphics are actually pretty awesome when you're driving especially when combined with the new collision physics system (throwing the e-brake and skidding into a lightpole and watching the rear window shatter from the impact is just awesome). The story is ground breaking, the voice acting is superb. Not just "good for a game" but actually good.

Playing the game feels like the people at rockstar got a bunch of gamers together and asked, "what don't you like now that we can do better?". Everything from being able to aim during drive-by's to the new way the wanted system works is an improvement over previous generations.

People aren't exagerating when they say that GTA4 might be the best video game ever made. Time will tell, but it definately has the potential from what I've played so far.

I don't see why GTA IV got a 10/10. I've played games that got lower scores that were a lot more fun. GTA IV fences the user into one section, limited weapons, and the player can't drive and shoot. The only inovation really added was the "relationships."

I haven't found a lot of things to do that aren't mission related (jumps - whoopty doo). I' would have believed a 9.2-.6 but not a 10. Saints Row is more fun despite the few problems with it.

On a side note, my 60GB PS3 didn't have any issues other than shading issues and a few graphical glitches.

This is actually the only game I have ever been excited about. Not even Vice City or San Andreas made me excited, I just looked at them as another itteration.

GTA4 has taken gaming to another level. The size of the city is freaking HUGE, I got lost last night just cruising around and listening to the radio stations. I was driving around and testing the GPS system (Turn left, 100 meters turn right). The radio stations have new songs that are currently playing on the radio and hell even the "Talk-Radio" is classic. I would discuss but you have to experience it for yourself.

I love mowing down the people because they will try to escape and boy they can run fast. I pulled one lady out of her car, pushed her down and let her run (was showing the wife the graphics and gameplay). While running she began screaming "I'm about to get my box cutter" I lol'd when they fight back.

Surpringly the only weapon I have got was the knife, I tried to disarm a cop but they jumped me and killed me. The new police tracking system is cool also, based on how many criminal stars you have is what determines how difficult it is to escape. 1-2 stars you can simply hightail a few blocks and escape. 5-6 stars, you better be ready to start a war with those helicopters, they will hunt you down like a rat.

I have the PS3 version and the grame froze for 2 seconds during a cutscene and the audio continued. It fixed itself and kept going. I also love how there are 0 load times, you simply walk through the doors of stores, house, etc and it is already loaded. I really dont care for DLC as there seems to already be plenty to do in the city to stay busy. The cabaret is pretty fun to visit in the start since its free.

I don't own either console, but my brother has got it for the XBOX 360. Seems pretty good, with so many nods to the previous games. "This bit of road reminds me of that bit in GTA3.. ect."

I must admit that it's getting harder to defend the GTA series now. G.T.A. 1,3 and Vice City were fun. While I didn't like GTA 2 and San Andreas so much. In fact I stopped playing San Andreas fairly early on. Personally I will reserve judgement and also wait to see if this latest installment returns to its spiritual home on the P.C.*

I think I am also slightly uncomftable that my younger sister (19) has been playing GTA 4. With issues such as the walls of the main characters flat, being plastered with posters of women in their underwear.

It's just not right. But then she did used to play GTA San Andreas as well.

*I get on much better with a keyboard and mouse with this type of game.

It froze once on me when I picked up Michelle for the first date, during the video of Niko and her interacting in her apartment. The audio kept going but the video definitely stopped once they tried to walk out the door.

I looked up this problem online reading how some people were told to uninstall the game and all saved content and to reinstall everything and start from scratch. I decided to try the game again before doing this and it hasn't frozen since.

Side note though, during extended gameplay and some of the longer video scenes there are very brief stutters that happen VERY rarely and they are very brief. During my playtime of 3 hours yesterday I probably had 2 in game and 2 video stutters in about 3 hours.

Other side note:

This game is awesome, single player and online. The graphics are unbelieveable and the game play is great. Not to mention all the small details they put in the game.

Example, while playing online I drove top speed into an opponent and rammed him into a bus stop. I definitely killed him, but as a result of the impact my character flew out through the front windshield and skidded along the pavement for a couple feet.

I've had that happen in single player too. Jacked a corvette style car and took off too fast so I doubt poor Niko got to put on his seat belt. Was funny as hell when I hit a concrete barrier at top speed and he flew right through the windshield.

Try as I might last night doing free mode multiplayer with a couple friends, I could not get Niko to go through the windshield of a car. I hijacked one of the fastest cars I've found and slammed right into a wall. Just hit the wall and came to a stop. Does it not work in multiplayer?

The original post said it happened to him in multiplayer, so I'm assuming so. In all the crashes I've been in, I've only seen it happen twice. Last night it was in a convertible and I hit a bridge support in the area right near the first safehouse.

Makes me glad I did buy the 360 version after reading of the issues specifically with the 60GB PS3 since thats the one I have.

I have yet to have any skips or locks, but that would really annoy me in this type of game. I am not a big fan of a limited save system to begin with and prefer to be able to save at any time, but having a chance of losing progress like that would really irk me.

Disclaimer: I own both platforms.

The Kotaku review actually never said the PS3 version was better. The author only recommended it because he likes the PS3 controller better and because of the "performance edge," which, since he admitted the game was nearly identical on both platforms (from his description I would actually choose the 360 version, regardless of the exclusive DLC), is simply preferential to his personal taste and fanboyish on the latter fact.

Come on...citing this article as someone saying the PS3 version was slightly better is bullocks.

To be fair, IGN also has a head to head, side by side comparison with video and they also said the PS3 version showed more fluidity, less stutters and pop ups. But at the end they also said the difference is so small that it'll only be noticeable in a side by side comparison. Both versions are good.

Hmm I am trading my xbox 360 in for ps3 and i will buy the GTA4 for it. I dont care of the little video and audio glitches, because it is happening on both platforms so i have seen. Ps3 does have better rendering, I have seen both side by side. You could notice a little more color and life with the ps3 while the xbox 360 version looked a little chartoony like San andreous did.

the reason for the DLC for xbox 360 is that GTA 4 is too big for the 360 and the PS3 can handle more information do to it having blu-ray. Sorry to say HD is dead the future lies in Blu-Ray.

And Rockstar will come to the PC in 6-8 months as normal. They are going wait for everyone to finish it on the console and release it on the PC.

Be stupid not too, they have a chance to double dip, maybe even triple for the true fantics.

But a 10/10 on IGN, IGN said that it only gives that to games who push the limits of gmaing. I've been considering a 360 just to play this

I've never tried PB/M, is it good? My gut seems to think it's not, but then again, who thought eating chicken eggs was a good idea? You know where it's been, man!

Continuing the analogy with something I know, I think playing GTA on the 360 is more like peanut butter and bananas. Like its counterpart, it's quite delicious, it's just a different flavor, is all.

In the last generation, I had a full deck of consoles, so I had the luxury of choice as to which GTA versions I would play. I ended up getting all of them for both PS2 and Xbox (established: I'm insane, I do not dispute this accusation), and found the Xbox versions to be easier on the eyes with slightly crisper controls. The ability to make your own radio stations, while hardly a must-have, was a nice touch. Additionally, I find the Xbox/Xbox360 controllers fit quite well in my hands. PS2 was supreme, as expected, for transporting save games to play over at a friend's house, while Xbox pampered us with the hard drive.

But it all comes down to what you prefer. Are you a PB/B kinda guy or a PB/J junkie? I never could choose, myself, so I just got both. =)

Pick your poison, but at the end of the day, game on.

Thats one thing they've left out this time around. There doesn't seem to be a way to make your own radio station. It'd be awesome if there was. Especially if they could integrate it with a DJ. Supposedly there will be a way to buy music in the game but if we've already got the music, we shouldn't have to buy it.

By Hiawa23 on 4/30/2008 4:00:03 PM , Rating: 2
Anyone who owns a 360 knows that MS made the 360 so that custom sdtrks are able to be used in all games. The system handles this, so there probably is no way to integrate your own music into the stations like on the Xbox1 which is different than the 360, & none of the PS3 disc based games even support custom sdtrks at this time, & you know, as far as I am concerned the music in the game hits on so many genres, there has to be some station that appeals to you. It's not even worth me bringing up as this is the way MS made the 360, & for some reason none of the PS3 devs including Sony are using custom sdtrks in disc based games. To me the stations are a small, albeit important part of the game & I really don't need to hear my sdtrk played at all in this. The in game music stations are good enough for me. No freezes 10 hours in on my 360 version.

You can switch the control configuration to "Classic." This will make the "X" button accelerate, and the square button brake.

I find that much easier when driving. L1 is still hand brake.

Why wouldn't it just use the same analog stick you use to steer to go forward and backward? The entire game control system is plagued with bad decisions like that.

Because you need to be able to accelerate and fully turn at the same time....

Running is different than driving. There isn't a driving game out there that puts acceleration/braking and turning on a single analog stick. Because it wouldn't work.

Any more ideas?

Halo 3. The controls couldn't be easier.

If it had Halos driving mechanic then I would expect drive-bys to be very awkward.

Since when is Halo 3 a driving game?

Has almost as much driving as GTA.

About the only thing I'll give you is that I could not for the life of me find a soda can to pick up and throw through the window. I ended up shooting it.

I found some cans, but they keep disappearing out of my hand. That was really annoying. Ended up beating up a yuppie for his coffee cup and throwing that, but it just bounced. So I punched the window out and that worked.

I do agree, the throwing mechanism could use a lot of work.

I found one, but threw it at the wrong window (to the right of it,) which is apparently made of some alien plexiglass material that doesn't shatter, but allows the can to pass through and fall on the floor.

However I do agree that the controls aren't perfect, but as far as I'm concerned they still did a good job of what they had; one real complaint with the controls I have is melee combat seems stunningly clunky, you feel like a retard when you're trying to beat people up
