I think that we can leave the homeless out of this one
After all the mischief and mayhem (but sadly, not
soap) of the Japanese PlayStation 3
launch due to such scarce supplies of less than 90,000
units, Nintendo hopes to bring love and peace by providing between four to
five times the number of Wiis compared to Sony's launch numbers.
BBC News heard from Nintendo that Japan will be
getting 400,000
Wiis on launch day on December 2. There's no definite report on the North
American numbers just yet, but we do know that Nintendo plans on having four
million Wiis worldwide by the end of this year.
The Japan launch date of the Wii marks an anomaly for the
Japanese gaming market. Typically, Japanese gaming companies such as Nintendo
and Sony launch its hardware on home soil before tackling the North American
market. The PlayStation 2 was available in Japan for over half a year before
hitting North America. The GameCube saw a month of Japan exclusivity before its
North American launch.
With six day difference between Japan and North American
PS3 launches, and the surprise of a North America-first launch with Wii, could
this represent a shift in market priorities? Perhaps, but maybe both Nintendo
and Sony did what they had to do to catch the busiest shopping period in the
Americas.
Also reported in the BBC story is that Nintendo
plans to ship 1.5 million Nintendo DS Lites,
which has been outselling basically everything in the console world. Nintendo's
odds are looking fairly favorable this holiday season with Wii and the absolute
domination of the DS.
