Jobs plans to roll out 3G iPhone next year, and keep same battery life

Apple's iPhone has been slighted for many reasons, including its price, contract obligations and lack of modern 3G wireless data ability. While the issue of price has been diluted with a $200 price cut, and contractual obligations made all but moot with the public release of the iUnlock software, the iPhone is still limited to the slower EDGE data service.

But not for much longer.

UK website Pocket-Lint is reporting that Steve Jobs has just announced that a 3G-enabled iPhone is on the way for 2008. No specific date or even a quarter was given, only the abstract "next year."

With the proliferation of wireless data access overseas it's no surprise that Jobs made this announcement at a London Apple store - but it may have the side effect of hurting sales of the first-generation iPhone, scheduled to launch in the UK on November 9th through O2.

Jobs also clarified why 3G connectivity was left out of the iPhone thus far; and as was clearly shown by AnandTech, battery life was the driving reason. But Jobs is optimistic that future models of the iPhone will have better technology allowing for both 3G and the promised 8 hours of call time.

But on the other hand, writing toward your intended audience isn't necessarily a bad thing. I'm all for utilizing every aspect of the English language, but using what amounts to colloquial slang isn't very target-neutral, like 'loo' and 'flat'. (Both of those examples are far more widely known than this use of 'slate'.)

DailyTech, while often attracting the more astute among us, also appeals to a much broader demographic. I'm not saying cater to the lowest common denominator, but perhaps try to use non-regional terms.

I see your point, but first of all, most people don't read with a dictionary nearby. Second, what's the purpose in using words or meanings that are uncommon? The only purpose I know of is to prove how smart you are, but that's not exactly an admirable or useful purpose.

I understood it, slated is commonly used in England. It's nothing to do with being smart, there are some words I don't understand, just check it up, no big deal.

... well i generally don't have a dictionary nearby... however in the case of reading something you find on the net... everyone has a ton of dictionaries at their fingertips. lol, and if all else fails, copy the word, go to google, and look it up.

And I wasn't saying to use uncommonly used words all the time and to prove how smart you think you are. But it shouldn't have to be edited it out of writing because the average joe will look at it scratching his head.

I agree, we shouldn't dumb things down, to hell with stupid people. Its not like they will understand when its explained anyhow... they're stupid after all - LOL (Although I am not at all sure that has anything to do with Dems or Reps for that matter).

Could you point to a reference for that definition of "to slate"?

I looked at Answers.com, Dictionary.com, Meriam Webster, and the Oxford English dictionary, and couldn't find anything similar.

It sounds like a British nuance to me, but not one I've heard before (I'm English).

NM, I found it; the Oxford English Dictionary website has a switch to change between US and UK entries.

UK entry for "slate (v)" includes:

So, yes it's a British nuance, and not one that (American) readers would even be able to find in a dictionary, unless they knew specifically to look at UK definitions.

It's so nice of him to finally promise us last year's technology next year and hopefully meet last year's battery life promise next year. What a guy!

I think Jobs must have attended the "I'll Gladly Pay You Tuesday for a Hamburger Today" School of Management.

Battery life isn't too bad on my iPhone, but it's either on the dock or plugged into my car most of the time. However, I don't talk on the phone for 6 hours a day nor am I on it at all times.

I wonder how they're going to solve the 3G power consumption, my Cingular 8525 was horrible for 3G, I'd get abotu 3 hours of use out of it before I have to charge it again.

TomZ... Always complaining about something when the subject includes the iPhone (or Apple). You are so pro-Microsoft and anti-Apple that this is getting boring. The iPhone doesn't have 3G and 3G coverage in the states is horrible anyway. What about HTC touch, P3350, P4350, P3300 etc. No 3G either. What about Blackberries, Wlan, nope. 3G? Let's see: Pearl, nope. 82X0, no. 82X0, no...

Oh no! So Apple isn't the only one with last year's technology but for some reason you just need to repeat the same boring story with every iPhone article? Apple is hardly an exception. Give it a rest.

Btw. O2 didn't bring 3G iPhones to Europe but there are rumors about T-mobile. Their leaked product page showed 3G, error? Who knows...

And no. I don't have an iPhone and I won't be getting one.

I'm not really anti-Apple, it's just that poking fun at their "adventures" is too much fun to resist. They're like the noobs that just arrived on the scene for the first time making beginner mistakes.

With more than 200M 3G subscribers globally, and with 3G networks having been deployed in Asia in 2001 and Europe in 2003, 3G is hardly tomorrow's technology. For a so-called "cutting edge" large-LCD to be lacking 3G is a pretty major shortcoming. Sure not all handsets would benefit from 3G, but the iPhone surely would.

Seriously, I don't care about them one way or the other. As I said, I find commenting about their follies irresistable, especially their recent blunders. I don't think I would choose to own an Apple product, but that has more to do with the attributes/limitations of the product itself rather than the company that produced it. For example, I bought a Samsung PMP instead of an iPod or a Sony because I don't appreciate the lock-em-up approach both those companies take (although Sony has recently seen the light). I could make a list if you like...

I'm more interested to know whether what Steve said was correct - do current 3G phones have a bad battery life? If so (and I honestly have no idea if it is or not) then surely the statements are justified.

What about you Hare? Is there ANYTHING Apple can do wrong in your eyes, or are you here strictly to defend every action they take and every product they make? It's one thing to prefer a particular product, and I understand why some people like Apple products but its another thing to be a complete "fanboy" and ignore any postitive points about a competing product, and ignore any negative points about Apple.

I would say that I appreciate Apple more than most people here but I really have no bias. I use a PC, I don't have an iPhone and I have never even owned an iPod. On the other hand I've used an iPhone, I've used iPods and I've had a few Macs.

Trust me, there are plenty of things I don't like about Apple but there are also tons of things I like. Apple has outstanding industrial design and usability. User experience is something that Apple does really well. You can't measure that by the length of the specifications list and that's exactly why the iPhone hype was so big. The user interface is the only reason why the iPhone is a big thing.

I admit that sometimes I can be provocative but I believe I judge Apple's products quite rationally. There has been plenty of Apple critizism that I agree with but usually those times I don't have anything to add so I may say more positive things about Apple than negative things. On the other hand the same goes to Intel, Ati, AMD etc.

I don't think he's Pro-Microsoft. I think he's Pro-Fairness. Microsoft does a certain thing and gets slammed for it. Apple does the same thing (or worse) and gets praised for it or no one cares.

You're right about that - Jobs and Apple do quite a few shady things and then put the big PR spin on everything and brainwash everyone into thinking they are geniuses. When in fact the reality is they are making beginner mistakes that most mature companies wouldn't have made in the first place.

Regarding Microsoft, I usually speak up because they are oft-maligned for things that are not deserved. I use quite a lot of Microsoft products, and I think they're pretty good. Not perfect, but good.

Of course it's obsolete. This products sells only on fancy, user friendly GUI and media bombardment. After all media creates pop stars(even bad) and now media creates products...
Of course it can be a lot more user friendly with missing functionality. Though to be objective I like the look of the GUI. Nokia smartphones don't have such a nice looking GUI, but top everywhere else.

I don't think anyone would disagree with you. Anyone who buys technology should realise that whatever it is that they just bought is obsolete immediately. As far as Apple goes, typically you should expect a new version of a product once every 6-months, so this would be in keeping with the tradition.

Only plus is the file transfer, the good part of having a video conversation...Nada.

I'm really hopping we will have Video for 3g sooner, because only file transfer is boring, not everyone uses anyway. Only AT&T supports 3G, t-mobile has yet to put their bands to work.

Only T-mobile is behind AT&T. Verizon Wireless and Sprint are on EVDO Rev A, and Altel is moving from Rev 0 to A.


Battery life

Battery life is a real concern because few other phones have had so many power sucking features like music, video, web browsing, e-mail, and calling all in one device where people will actually use ALL of them to the point where battery life can become a problem.

Not that other phones besides the iPhone can't do this stuff (most cheapo phones can), but I don't know anyone that like browsing the web on a 176x220 screen (normal cheapo phone screen res).

I'm just waiting for the 16GB version. It's coming sometime...

If this holds true, don't hold your breath for 3G on the iPhone for about a year.




Apple on Orange Action...

Apple in the UK! Does this mean we'll finally be seeing Apple on Orange (UK) action?

On a more serious note, I doubt that the real reason Apple excluded 3G from its iPhone had anything remotely to do with battery life. For a device promoting so many other (i.e. non-phone) battery hungry functionality and a non-user replaceable battery, it's just hard to believe. More likely, it was due to the iPhone being released and targeted towards an American market where 3G is still in its infancy. Why spend more money and research on a technology when the majority of your target audience will never use or no the difference.

"They'll still pay $599 for it so why bother. Well just tell the press it's because of battery life... yes that'll do... And they'll tell the consumer for us."

Overseas its a different story. Apple needs 3G to seriously compete. Hence a 3G announcement in the UK and not USA. This also gives Apple time to develop a proper world phone where it's needed and, in the mean time, still sell a boat load.
