Just a little noisey

This is the loudest card ever created by a considerable margin. It almost makes the GTX 480 seem quiet.

People ripped on the 480 for it's noise, heat and power draw by this takes the cake. Yes it's 2 GPU's and not one like with the 480, but still! Dont know how anyone could possibly stand the noise from this, or choose it over crossfire 6950/6970's. You'd also need 6 slots for two of these in crossfire as AMD recommends having the 3rd slot empty next to each card... but imagine the noise from two of these - that would be over 100dB sound levels.
To put that in perspective, thats louder than a subway train, most motor cycles and mowers.

No, no it wouldn't. Decibels are measured on a logarithmic scale, not a linear scale.

Ah forgot that. So what would 77dB + 77dB be together roughly?
It's going to be unbearably loud either way. I would consider just one of these cards way too loud.
I had a GTX480 for a brief period and that was just acceptable with the noise, but a single 6990 is quite a bit louder.

log10(2*x) = log10(2) + log10(x)

If log10(x) = 77, double the noise is roughly 77.3dB

It's still twice the noise, but it looks nicer in dB.

Or course, since everything else is also measured in that way it still isnt louder then a train.

This isn't accurate. No matter what the reference, a 3dB increase doubles the value, therefore 77dB + 77dB = 80dB.

Yeah, I was using the formula for Bells. For decibels I should have multiplied by 10.

Just look at the other noise readings for cards, and their sli/crossfire variants.

The GTX580 is 59.9dB, so according to your maths it would be totally unusable at ~120dB, much louder than the 77.3 dB of the single card HD6990, when in reality it's actually 66.6dB.

Not arguing that it's damn noisy tho, maybe worth some after market/water cooling? It seems a bit odd that they have released something so darned noisy, especially when Nvidia have been working hard on quieter solutions to the heat/noise problems.

Nvidia seem to have learned their lessons from their cards power consumption, noise and heat levels. Hopefully AMD will do the same now, and have something quieter for their next series of cards, without relying on people using after market cooling options.

"Forgot that"?

WTF man, your anti-AMD rage had you in a place where it seemed possible that a 9cm fan could make more noise than a subway or motorcycle!

Drop the blind religious following, take a deep breath and think before you post.

I guess you never heard a 9cm fan spinning at 3billion rpm :D
