More search engine competition on the way

Google, Microsoft and Yahoo may be in for a bigger challenge than just from each other. In a report from MSN Mainichi Japan, 30 large organizations consisting of the University of Tokyo and other large electronics companies such as Hitachi, Ltd., Fujitsu Ltd. and the Nippon Telegraph and Telephone group have banded together to create a new advanced search engine. The Japanese government is also providing funding for the major project.

According to the report (English), major Japanese corporations fear that the top three globally used search engines are US-based companies, and this may prevent other international organizations from entering the market.

The new search engine technology is said to be openly modifiable by users and other enterprises for specific needs. The search engine can be configured for example, to search for only specific topics related to medicine instead of general Internet information. Concerns that a monopoly is occurring was also a main reason for this major joint project. Google's censoring of information for users residing in China was also something that the group decided was control of information in a negative way.

rofl japan can't huh?! toyota was ranked the #1 car company in the world, and their lexus line is the shiznit. that's not to mention all the other japanese automobile car companies that are kicking arse. im very confident the japanese, in terms of technology, can accomplish anything they set their minds to.

Yeah and just think over in Japan your whole live is "the company" -- you spend many hours working each week, some japanese corporations still have their own employees clean their buildings each night (re: I don't mean hired janitors I mean if you work there, you are expected to pitch in and clean)...on your "free time" much of their culture is based around their companies. Its just "for the company" mentally pretty much 24/7/365. So sure they are very productive and make quality cars and electronics..but 'cmon -- call me a "crazy american" but I don't want my entire life 24/7/365 pledging my soul to my company.

Also, sidenote on Lexus, very sweet cars -- but having known family members (4 of them) who's owned Lexus cars, plust my old boss who owned 2 personally (he wasn't a nice guy btw..just thought I'd throw that in there..lol) -- I've heard nothing but complaints of HORRIBLE service Lexus provides...I've been told BMW and Mercedes destroys Lexus when it comes to service.

I tend to disagree with Japan and the people of it being able to crush anything, read, WW2. They also can't compete with Harley or US trucks because they don't understand why people buy trucks or Harleys in the first place, let alone the sort of people who purchase these products. The Ford F150 outsells most of Toyota by itself, so they can't crush anything. In fact, their biggest area of expertise is robotics. I am always confused by the continued belief that Japan is vastly superior to other countries, esp. in terms of technology. As a last note, remember their business style and what they do today in terms of industry was thought up and presented to the Japanese (who ate it up after US companies said no) by an American in the 1950's.

30 major companies ... Japanese or not, just when do you see any commercial success had came out with a collaboration of 30 "major" companies? 30 companies means 30 different agenda. Haven't we see enough of grand failure already?

Lets see... ALL OF JAPAN VS.... Google? Uhhh, if this isn't the surest sign that Japan is getting its ass kicked in this space I don't know what it is. This is nothing but an act of sheer desperation and it will probably fail. I think the reason it will fail is simply that Google is too young, too dynamic, too focused, and they're already making billions. The people at Google now, made Google what it is, that means a lot. They haven't grown stagnant, heck, they're probably looking for a little challenge.



RE: Japanese cars vs. American cars.

FACT: Ford and GM CAN make great cars, the fact is they CHOOSE NOT TO... There are numerous examples of great cars past and present from both companies. The fact that they don't make them is simply short-sighted cash grabbing.... Their reluctance to make great cars has more than a little to do with the fact that despite Japans great vehicles, until recently Ford and GM have been raking in the dollars, hundreds of billions of dollars. GM is still the biggest auto company, and Ford is still number two, and they're both still profitable on the whole. Its hard to innovate when you make crap and people keep buying it.

As big as Toyota has become, and as good as their cars are, they STILL are smaller than both Ford and GM. Now that Ford and GM are feeling the pressure they ARE responding and they DO have some compelling new vehicles in the offing. They aren't stepping it up enough IMO but there has been some improvement.

Folks companies seeking to unseat Google for Search aren't doing so for some benevolent reason. Search has a hidden Trojan Horse in it called advertising revenue. Everyone is telling you they wish to create a better search engine but the reality is they want to pull you from Google and gain access to the lucrative advertsing dollars.

When everone was screaming about information laden portals Google was keeping their page lean and mean and building up the backend. They have the talent in spades and frankly Japan is strong in hardware engineering but they aren't anything special in software engineering. Germany is likely more innovative than Japan when it comes to software my IMO of course. No real threat here in my estimation.

Control of information in a negative way? I don't think Google has much choice here. They either do it their way, or they get out. I think the Japanese companies have yet to figure out that international business in countries like China where everything is heavily regulated, gives them no bargaining power whatsoever.

Both Yahoo and MSN are being creamed by Google. Yahoo gave up, and MSN is waiting for Windows Vista. Windows Vista allows Google Toolbar right? Dell is allow to change the default search from MSN to Google right?




Competition?

Bring it, competition is always a good thing. Google will be forced to do better, but lol I'm an average user and google is working pretty fine right now. I don't know how much better it can get. Ultimatley the consumers will win, unless a monopoly occurs lol.

The concern of Japan and any other countries is understandable and legitimate.

I doubt anyone of you has actually seen any result of this project or even any insightful details of the plan yet. Any speculation claiming doom of this project or demise of Google is pure BS coming right out of your a$$.

I'm sick of Google sheeps dissing anything or anyone that competes against Google; please crawl back down to your G Shrine. Google fanatism nowadays has gone as much out of hand as Microsoft bashing -- everything Google is good, everything Microsoft is bad. There is no more room for sensible judgement.
