This why we need a competitive nVidia

I think ATi's product releases for the 5700/5800 series have been great for the most part. But without any real competition for nVidia we're getting useless cards like this. It can't even beat a 4890 and is way more expensive (it barely beats a 4870).

Early speculation doesn't look good, but I'm hoping that Fermi can put at least a bit of a downward pressure on current GPU prices.

Not looking to good at the moment but seems like a lot of speculation.

How reliable is that site as a source of information and opinion?

I hope it's not that reliable, else a lot of people are going to be disappointed (from both camps) as Nvidia seem to have failed and won't even be able to compete on price, which will mean that ATI will have no reason to offer price cuts for their current line up.

I've read the Semiaccurate article, but I'll believe things when I see them. Unfortunately, it really does look like Fermi is going to be hovering around the high-end and we won't see mainstream parts for a while.

I'm expecting a lot re-badged nVidia cards.

Yep, that's the lack of competition for you. The DX 10 cards have competition from Nvidia, so the 4xxx cards are priced accordingly. However, there are plenty of people who will (rightly or wrongly) buy a 5xxx card for the DX11 capabilities and ATI is their only choice, so they can charge what they want, and this is just a card to fill a gap in their pricing, as hey know that a lot of people buy whatever they can afford.

I'm guessing that when (if?) Nvidia roll into town with something competitive this round, then ATI's pricing will all fall into place(ish).

You can see why ATI/AMD are making hay whilst they can though. It wasn't that long ago that people were saying that AMD/ATI had screwed everything up with their merger and that ATI's cards sucked compared to Nvidia's, so ATI might not be in business for too long. How quickly things can change. It'd be interesting to see what the bottom line has been like for the last 12 months, after we had article after article saying how much money they were losing a while ago.

I'm definitely holding out hope that fermi will live up to potential. I bought a 4890 in November when I finally wasn't happy with the performance of my 8800 GTS SLI setup, mainly as a stopgap b/c my order for a 5850 got backordered. Now I'm just waiting it out for the next big thing. This 4890 has been more than impressive enough for me for the gaming I'm doing right now. But really, I want something that will let me do a 3 way monitor setup. And that's where 5870/fermi will come in :)

The 4890 is still the benchmark to beat IMHO..

5850 or 5830
By majBUZZ on 2/25/2010 4:41:24 PM , Rating: 2
After looking at the reviews and checking prices at the egg it still seems like the 5850 is a better deal at a price/performance point.

I have a Asus 5850 ( with unlocked voltage) and was able to overclock it to 5870 speeds of 850/1200 ( using Msi awesome tool afterburner) with no need to increase voltage.

Temps stayed below 68c at 35% fan speed with a room temp of around 22c (70f). So for around 60$ more id go for the 5850 instead. The 5850 fan is unbelievably loud past around 40%.

Looked at two reviews and this is not like the 4830 situation. 5830 draws more power is slower and hotter than 5850. Even the price seems higher than what the performance suggests.

Shame Nvidia is late to the party. 5850 was $260 at launch and then jumped to $300.
