Porsche's new Cayenne Hybrid generates 380hp

When we last visited Porsche's Cayenne S Hybrid SUV, the German automaker was finishing up road testing on prototypes. Today, however, Porsche is getting official with pricing for its large hybrid.

The new Cayenne S Hybrid will be priced from $67,770 -- this compares to a base MSRP of $46,700 for the standard entry-level Cayenne. The Cayenne S Hybrid uses the 3.0-liter supercharged V6 engine found in the Audi S4 which generates 333 hp. An electric motor generating 47 hp brings total system power for the parallel hybrid to 380 hp. Power is transmitted to all four wheels using an 8-speed Tiptronic S transmission.

Official U.S. fuel economy numbers have not yet been released for the Cayenne S Hybrid, but the vehicle achieves 28.68 mpg on the European cycle according to Porsche's German website. For comparison, the 400 hp, V8-powered Cayenne S achieves 22.4 mpg and the Cayenne Diesel (which is unlikely to come here) is rated at 31.79 mpg.

According to Porsche, the Cayenne S Hybrid is powerful enough to dash to 60 mph in just 6.1 seconds and has a top speed of 150 mph.

The latest Cayenne is 1.9 inches longer than its predecessor and rides on a 1.6-inch longer wheelbase. Also, depending on the trim level, the new Cayenne is up to 400 pounds lighter than the outgoing version.

Nice to see such impressive 0-60 stats on an SUV, but... I never understood the allure of a Porsche SUV. To me, it was a bandwagon move that diluted its brand. I guess they've got bills to pay, but the Cayenne broke my heart when it was first introduced, and I quietly despise all the d-bags I see driving them.

I don't particularly care for them either, but it brings in the $$$ for Porsche. Same goes for the new Panamera. It's now Porsche's best-selling model -- go figure.

I LOVE IT. Right in the middle of the highest period of SUV hate, Porsche gave the ultimate F.U to the green movement.
That's an old fight for them as the green party (is it an actual party?) in Germany has been in their a$$ for quite a few decades.

Panamera... even the name is stupid. I seriously thought it was a joke when I first saw it. Laughed at my gf when she told me. "Panamera? Porsche would never name a car Panamera!" Not to mention it's u-g-l-y.

Exactly how I feel. But honestly Porsche's soul died when they started selling more automatic transmissions then manuals.

What about Ferrari? They're going to ditch traditional manuals altogether and use dual-clutch transmissions.

Same goes for Lamborghini.

Dual clutch transmissions are nothing but racing soul. I'm sick of the unfounded auto-enthusiast penchant for manual transmissions above all else - even high performance DSG - which has been standard in Formula 1 forever now.

I've threw the stick around for about a decade before recently going back to automatic trans (actually, a CVT). While I enjoyed how my previous cars' manual transmissions forced me to learn to feel/understand the engine more precisely, progress is progress. I also enjoy not having to worry about dos prompt text anymore in my operating system.

On the other hand, I completely agree with the cars losing their spirit based on form factor. 4 door Porsche FTL. If you want a people-mover, there are much better options for your dollar.

Agreed. Manuals aren't the only way to go for performance cars, anymore. Furthermore, this thing is a Porsche primarily in name.

As an auto enthusiast and motorcyclist it's all about being one with the machine. It keeps your mind focused on the task at hand more so than letting the engine shift for you. That includes when stopping at a light, it can be convenient but overall I'd love to downshift it myself.

I think being "one with the machine" has more to do with state of mind than having certain equipment. As a big proponent of manual transmissions, dual clutch (DCT) and even the older sequential tranny's are NOT like your traditional slushboxes. Even your traditional slushboxes are MUCH better than years past (although you'll never see one in my car). My next car will have a DCT as I will still have control over shifts plus I'll have the benefit of superfast (no human can shift that fast) shifts. Browse youtube for comparisons between DCT and manual cars. DCT cars are just faster and more consistent. I'll gladly trade in my clutch pedal to gain these new benefits.

In this day and age whatever it takes to make $$$, they will do it. You do know that Lamborghini never started as a exotic car builder but as a tractor builders. As they still do up to this day.

I have to say, when I first heard Porsche was making an SUV, I had the same reaction. What the heck are you guys doing?

But as it turns out, it's actually a superior product. I know a guy who test drives cars and rates them as his weekend job. He says this particular car was the best he'd ever driven. So maybe there is something to this beyond just building a cash cow.

That being said, this is still a "I know a guy in the pub" sort of thing.
Therefore I propose that all dailytech readers band together and donate the money to buy me one of these things. I'll tell you how it is. Maybe I'll even send you pictures.
Who knows? It might even be so comfortable and excellent that I'll take a road trip to wherever one of you guys live to let you see it in person.
I won't actually let you ride in it, that would be asking a bit much.
But still, If you need your nose rubbed in something, feel free to donate.

why the hell would Porsche be lazy and use a supercharger instead of a turbocharger? If I can get a nissan or a volvo with a turbo, I'd expect a Porsche to have one as well. There is no reason to use a supercharger over a turbocharger today except for cost. Great advancements have been made to turbochargers to the point where they have almost none of the drawbacks. A turbocharger would be especially useful in a so called "hybrid" vehicle if they actually cared about fuel economy.

To be honest, Audi gets more power and torque out of its 3.0-liter V6 with a supercharger than BMW does out of its 3.0-liter inline-6 with a turbo.

Audi does but it's not like BMW can't get more power out of that engine. And they have with the new "is" cars.

AND it gets better fuel economy to boot -- even with AWD vs RWD for the 3er.

So the supercharger ain't so bad IMHO ;)

Don't get me wrong!! It's an awesome car, just saying that BMW isn't that far behind. At least, not enough to make a difference IMO. BTW, I think the S4 makes a bit more than its rated power. I'd much rather have the S5 though. ;)
