Fire sale on HP Touch Pads is already live in Canada

Now this may be a hard deal for many to pass up, even though HP is discontinuing webOS and its hardware products. But HP will begin selling the 16GB TouchPad for $99 starting tomorrow. Likewise, the 32GB model will sell for just $50 more.

According to the original poster, who happens to be a SlickDeals editor, we don't have any idea when the deal will start tomorrow in the U.S., but keep your eyes open and watch out for HP's server to catch on fire as people rush to purchase $99 tablets.

And for those that doubt the price cut, Future Shop (a Canadian subsidiary of Best Buy) has already dropped their price to $99. So for our Canadian readers out there, have fun while everyone in the U.S. waits for the sale to come online.

Updated @ 8:23pm EST

PreCentral grabbed a memo that HP sent to its affiliates which confirms the deal:

HP will be lowering the price of the TouchPad beginning Saturday 8/20/11. This is the lowest price ever for the TouchPad so please post it as soon as it goes live.

16GB TouchPad- $99; 32GB TouchPad - $149

Just placed my order at HP.com using this method:

http://slickdeals.net/forums/showthread.php?p=4181...

Even used a $15 off coupon (SAVE15HP) which brought it to $90.73 with NC sales tax.

WOOT!

Thanks for the link. For some reason only the 32gig came up with the discount, but I ordered one for 152.46 after tax to Cali.

Awesome... Just picked up the $99 for $91 (with discount). Now that's a deal!

Now lets get Android on it (didn't research the feasibility - just a dream)

Target.com is OOS too at the lower prices. Guess the rest of you guys will have to wait for Best Buy, Amazon, and Staples to drop their prices.

best buy here in montreal said they were out of stock at the moment they opened their door. i know, because i was first in line. they won't let you order online either. i'm guessing corporate told them not to sell at $99, so they can flog them for $350 on ebay later. how can you be out of stock on an overstocked item literally overnight? something's fishy here.

Future Shop was selling them yesterday, so maybe Best Buy was too?

they told me they're all out of stock, looked it up on the computer. they refused to sell me a display model, because "we still need it."

ah well, i didn't really need a tablet anyway. it would have just been a nice thing to have; that's all. i guess i'll wait another year or two until prices come down to netbook levels.

Employee hoarding. Some Toronto Future Shop employees have already been fired and it's happening at almost every store.

Did you get a confirmation email yet? Those who dont use the coupon are getting them making us wonder if using the coupon code gets the order cancelled.

Got my 32 GB model w/ Wireless Keyboard, Case, and TouchPad Charger Stand for $260 (normal price $700, so 63% off), including tax, direct from HP.

I figure I'll use webOS until it EOLs then pop the Ice Cream Sandwich source on it (which should be out by then).

I'm gonna get one for my dad. At $99, it's a no-brainer for a web tablet.

By kleinma on 8/20/2011 9:25:48 AM , Rating: 2
If you can find one.. Most retail online places are still listing it at full price. HP is the only site I see it marked down, and its out of stock.

RE: Damn

My girl was out at PC Richards with her mom and called me to say they had them. She picked me up a 16 and 32GB. 16GB models are selling on ebay for 200 bucks right now, so I figure I can sell that, and have the 32GB model for 50 bucks!

Consequences

What are the consequences of buying one of these and say 6 months later HP turns off their support servers for this?

I hear synergy won't work. What other features will cease to work?

RE: Consequences

I would imagine they likely would keep servers running for at least one year from the day they stop selling them (which may be today)

International discounts too?

Will these be similarly discounted in other countries? Where?

I ask because I'm really interested!

I'll do it
By GreenEnvt on 8/19/2011 8:52:12 PM , Rating: 2
Sure it's dead, but if my boss gives me the go ahead I'll grab a couple.

PS - Future shop isn't exactly best buy's Canadian retail chain. Best buy exists here in Canada too with many stores just like the US. They bought Future shop a few years back and maintain them both. Generally they carry the same stuff, but Bestbuy gives their Futureshop staff commision, but not the staff in their Bestbuy stores.
It has it's plusses and minuses. Staff are less pushy at Bestbuy, but also less helpful.

Best Buy and Future Shop sold out of theirs last night, but Staples wasn't selling theirs until this morning.

Unfortunately they didn't have a limit, so people were buying 3 or more, and now Kijiji is full of listings for people selling the 16GB ones for $250 and the 32GB $275-300.

Luckily, I have 3 people meeting me in front of a bank at 5pm so I can buy a TouchPad from them. I wonder how long it will take them to realize there's 3 dudes just hanging around in front of a bank with a NIB HP TouchPad?

By vazili on 8/21/2011 11:02:55 AM , Rating: 2
I bought mine last night at Best Buy. Im just waiting until this thing gets rooted.

Would I have paid full price for it? Oh no. 100? sure

Truth in advertising
By lowsidex2 on 8/21/2011 8:40:31 AM , Rating: 2
I hope they are explaining to the average buyer these are discontinued to limited future support and software. Not everyone buying a tablet will know this. All they will see is the cheap price.

RE: Truth in advertising
By Piiman on 8/22/2011 10:52:11 AM , Rating: 2
I'm sure they are wondering why and I know BB is telling people since they are selling them with no returns. Seriously the average user will not even care as long as they can check their email. If i gave one to my mother she would probably never look at the app store or every even think about a firmware upgrade. She would never know or care.

Cheapest Honeycomb tablet ever
By XSpeedracerX on 8/20/2011 2:25:20 AM , Rating: 1
Once google releases the code for honeycomb (probably after ICS gets here), xda will slap it on here. Guaranteed. Mark my words people. This thing is basically cutting edge hardware at shitty chinese tablet prices. Once honeycomb gets hacked on here, that plus the firesale price which can only go down from here now will make this an unbeatable alternative.

If I were running HP, I would have cut down the hardware a bit (maybe a single core instead of a dual, and half the ram) and undercut the iPad by about $150-200. "It has issues, but a its a good value tablet." The reviewers would have chirped, giving the software engineers plenty of time to fix webOS's issues while the low price brings in new customers and attracts devs to the nascent platform.

RE: Cheapest Honeycomb tablet ever
By Solandri on 8/20/2011 7:10:04 PM , Rating: 2
I've maintained since before the iPad came out that sub-$200 is the sweet spot for these devices. Maybe $250 for businesses. If a manufacturer can figure out how to make a decent tablet and sell it at that price profitably, their sales volume is going to make the iPad look like the 5% share Apple currently has of the PC market.

At $499, you end up comparing these things to laptops. But at $199 or less, you start to think of all sorts of new ways you can use these. Put it in a zip-lock bag and watch TV (hulu) while you shower. Place it on the table (on its charger) as a digital picture frame, which doubles as a web/email browser when you want. Rip some DVDs, hang it behind one of the car seats for the kids instead of paying $300+ for a car DVD system. etc. A $499 tablet is something you'll baby and protect and take with you because you paid so much for it. A $100-$199 tablet is something you won't be afraid to use and abuse, and can leave lying around the house without feeling guilty about wasted money.

By Tony Swash on 8/22/2011 5:48:01 PM , Rating: 1
What an Interesting experiment.

It turns out there is no such thing as a 'tablet market'.

Just an iPad market.

In order generate the same sort of enthusiastic sales demand that is common place for the iPad you have to sell competing devices at a fifth of the price of an iPad.

Good luck with that.

That isn't the point. The point is that you're buying an end-of-life product. New out of the box, the thing is obsolete. It will not get any new updates, enhancements, bug fixes, etc. It's not like buying a used PC, where you can install modern software - you're buying into a proprietary ecosystem... a dead proprietary ecosystem. In my mind, that is junk at any price.

Now if HP decided to open source the whole thing, that would be a whole different story.....
