Crysis looks pretty in Windows XP too
In a brilliant move to counter the release of Guitar Hero III, EA and Harmonix have seen fit to outfit various Best Buys – and perhaps other retailers – with Rock Band demo setups. Quite the crafty move indeed, with purchasers walking out the door with their fancy new guitar game, quickly realizing that they are without a drummer or singer. Has anyone had a chance to try one the Rock Band demo yet?
Crysis DX10 Features Working in Windows XP Trying to buy into the hype that Windows Vista is required for those eye-popping DX10 features? Crysis isn’t going to do much to convince anyone, as a clever poster in the Crysis Online Forums has discovered a way to enable DX10 effects in the Crysis demo while running in Windows XP. All one has to do is edit a single configuration file and XP users will be able to experience Crysis in all its special effect glory. Of course, this is only confirmed to work for the demo. It’ll be interesting to see if it’ll work in the final retail which ships in two weeks.
Hellgate: London Released, Patches to Follow While it may seem like PC gamers will all have to dump hundreds to thousands of dollars into their gaming rigs in order to play games this holiday season a la Crysis, those with more modest systems will still be able to enjoy the latest title. Hellgate: London is one such title, made by the same minds behind the Diablo. The formula for Hellgate: London doesn’t stray too far from the classic dungeon-crawling, item-collecting gameplay, except now it can be played like a first person shooter. Reviews so far have been positive, though one has to wonder how much better it could have been if it shipped without all those bugs.
Warhammer Online Delayed Again When EA bought Mythic, it knew it had an MMO powerhouse on its hands. With the combination of Mythic’s knowhow and the Warhammer franchise’s following, both EA investors and gamers were eager for Warhammer Online’s release this fall. But then, the game was delayed to the Q1 2008, and now it’s been delayed again into summer 2008. Just more WoW until then.
EA Reports $195 Million Loss Electronic Arts, known as the world’s biggest publisher and yearly refresher of franchises, reported a second quarter loss of $195 million. In hopes of cutting costs, EA will put into action reorganization plans. Under the new reorganization, EA will be “closing certain facilities,” and “relocating and/or eliminating certain job positions.” On the bright side, EA will have a lot to look forward this quarter with the release of The Orange Box, Hellgate: London, Crysis, Rock Band, The Simpsons Game, Need For Speed ProStreet and many more.
Manhunt 2 Censored Content Uncovered Thanks to modern video hardware, developers can add filters over on-screen images for added effect. The Silent Hill series does this to add ambiance, while games such as Manhunt 2 do this to cover the gory bits to satisfy the ESRB. Russian hackers have reportedly found a way to remove this filter in Manhunt 2 for the PSP, at least for those with custom PSP firmware. Those who can play homebrew software can view all the uncensored bits after dumping the contents onto a Memory Stick and edit a few files. Best of all? The ESRB doesn’t care.
