Crysis looks pretty in Windows XP too

In a brilliant move to counter the release of Guitar Hero III, EA and Harmonix have seen fit to outfit various Best Buys – and perhaps other retailers – with Rock Band demo setups. Quite the crafty move indeed, with purchasers walking out the door with their fancy new guitar game, quickly realizing that they are without a drummer or singer. Has anyone had a chance to try one the Rock Band demo yet?

Crysis DX10 Features Working in Windows XP
Trying to buy into the hype that Windows Vista is required for those eye-popping DX10 features? Crysis isn’t going to do much to convince anyone, as a clever poster in the Crysis Online Forums has discovered a way to enable DX10 effects in the Crysis demo while running in Windows XP. All one has to do is edit a single configuration file and XP users will be able to experience Crysis in all its special effect glory. Of course, this is only confirmed to work for the demo. It’ll be interesting to see if it’ll work in the final retail which ships in two weeks.

Hellgate: London Released, Patches to Follow
While it may seem like PC gamers will all have to dump hundreds to thousands of dollars into their gaming rigs in order to play games this holiday season a la Crysis, those with more modest systems will still be able to enjoy the latest title. Hellgate: London is one such title, made by the same minds behind the Diablo. The formula for Hellgate: London doesn’t stray too far from the classic dungeon-crawling, item-collecting gameplay, except now it can be played like a first person shooter. Reviews so far have been positive, though one has to wonder how much better it could have been if it shipped without all those bugs.

Warhammer Online Delayed Again
When EA bought Mythic, it knew it had an MMO powerhouse on its hands. With the combination of Mythic’s knowhow and the Warhammer franchise’s following, both EA investors and gamers were eager for Warhammer Online’s release this fall. But then, the game was delayed to the Q1 2008, and now it’s been delayed again into summer 2008. Just more WoW until then.

EA Reports $195 Million Loss
Electronic Arts, known as the world’s biggest publisher and yearly refresher of franchises, reported a second quarter loss of $195 million. In hopes of cutting costs, EA will put into action reorganization plans. Under the new reorganization, EA will be “closing certain facilities,” and “relocating and/or eliminating certain job positions.” On the bright side, EA will have a lot to look forward this quarter with the release of The Orange Box, Hellgate: London, Crysis, Rock Band, The Simpsons Game, Need For Speed ProStreet and many more.

Manhunt 2 Censored Content Uncovered
Thanks to modern video hardware, developers can add filters over on-screen images for added effect. The Silent Hill series does this to add ambiance, while games such as Manhunt 2 do this to cover the gory bits to satisfy the ESRB. Russian hackers have reportedly found a way to remove this filter in Manhunt 2 for the PSP, at least for those with custom PSP firmware. Those who can play homebrew software can view all the uncensored bits after dumping the contents onto a Memory Stick and edit a few files. Best of all? The ESRB doesn’t care.

Crysis in XP

Crytek has said that the same DX10 was achievable with DX9 but at slower rendering rate. The reason they chose to go with DX10 for max FX was due to its efficient processing paths.

The fact is that they don't allow you to select the higher rendering quality on XP, even though the performance on DX9 under XP is very similar to DX10 under Vista (noted in the linked thread).
It's called "Games for Windows", otherwise known as being Microsoft's gimp.

It is still very playable. Last night I was at my brothers work playing on a 90" screen (Brand new projectors, got ta love em') at 1024x768 with the Ultra High settings and it worked flawlessly around 20-25 FPS, until I turned on AA x2... then my FPS went to about 5. I could play fine on a XFX 8600 GT XXX OC'ed to meet the GTS. Now with the people with the new 8800 GT's or even the 320 GTS they should be able to play it just fine on ultra high. It was a rather shotty move however it is the demo so they may be changing it on the release. It is just a config after all.

I do remember there being some debate over what DX10 actually does. Supposedly, it's just more efficient at rendering than DX9 rather than adding a lot of new visuals.

If they do decide to leave it in the retail, this might be bad news for Vista. I know a lot of people only bought Vista for Crysis with DX10. Even if it doesn't end up in retail, I'm sure a hack will eventually surface. XP/Windows 2000 are still considered to be the superior gaming operating systems since they use far less system resources than Vista does. (Win2k in particular) All Vista had was DX10.

it would be great to play single player and online free but also have the option to pay for more features. i find it a nice idea since too many games these days seem so commercial

i am referring to hellgate (didn't even pay attention to the other articles). diablo was just so addictive and i've always respected blizzard for battle.net but was really disapointed with wow. i have never heard of a game referred to as a cash cow until wow.

Thoughts on Hellgate

I just spent the majority of my Saturday not doing tax work, but playing Hellgate. I'd have to say, the Diablo feel is alive and well -- one of the first missions is to retrieve Wert's prosthetic leg.

For those looking for Diablo III, however, this is not. It is an excellent Dungeon Siege replacement, but the depth and feel from Diablo is not there.

By far, the worst problem with this game is the bugs. I've fallen through the map a few times; I've done half my quests out of order (sometimes that works and sometimes it doesn't); and I have all sorts of problems with the UI control.

i've always thought that hellgate will be something to keep you busy until diablo iii came out. but then i found out that most of the diablo devs were working on hellgate. now that made me think that maybe hellgate would be diablo iii. but after reading a few views and previews, i don't know what to think anymore.

i just hope you get to explore london as i imagine it. abandoned underground stations, creepy cathedrals and all.

In a not so brilliant move, some Best Buys allow customers to purchase the Rock Band Demo kits for $180, wayyy ahead of the release date.

Played Rockband

I tried both the GHIII and Rockband demos at my Best Buy last night. The GHIII guitar had already been beat to hell, and the green key didn't work.

I tried the guitar on Rockband. Played "Epic" by Faith No More and "Wanted Dead or Alive" by Bon Jovi. Game played good. The timing is a little different than GHIII. The neck on the guitar feels lighter and looser. Overall cheaper feel. The larger size is nice and the "12th fret" buttons are great. Hopefully can try drums soon.
